Saddest film you've ever seen?

So I'm sitting here watching Seven Pounds (Will Smith)
I've seen this film loads of times, but it never fails to make me cry. Like proper ugly cry, tears streaming, everything.
This is the only film that does this to me. I think it's so underrated.

What movies do this to other people??

OP posts:

And Beaches of course. Sobbed at 18 re watched at 44 yep sobbed again

Also the scene in The Duchess where Keira knightly hands over her newborn to her horrid FIL forever. Dh and I want to see the film as our first outing after dd2 born so abit close to home!

MsTSwift · 20/06/2019 22:11

I walked out of Schindlers list I just couldn’t bear it. My dad (history teacher) refused to see it as too upsetting he was right

Nat6999 · 20/06/2019 22:11

PS I love you, I watched this film so many times with my late partner & it led to a discussion of what he wanted if or when he died.
Jawbone, my partner died through alcoholism & the despair Jimmy McCabe the lead character goes through trying to give up drinking brought back many memories of my partner.
I Daniel Blake, I've been in the same position as the single mum, not knowing where the next penny was coming from & depending on benefits, every member of staff working for the DWP & every MP should be made to watch this.

Beaches 😫😫😥😥😭😭😭😭😭💕

Frankley · 20/06/2019 22:31

Charlotte Grey. Could not watch it more than once.

PajamasnoDramas · 20/06/2019 22:31

La Vie en Rose, biopic of Edith Piaf. Such a tragic life. Not much on screen makes me blub, but there’s not much let-up in that that one. Marion Cotillard’s portrayal is magnificent.

stillnotjustamummy · 20/06/2019 22:39

The opening 15 minutes of Up get me every time!

tiredandgrumpy · 20/06/2019 22:46

So many of these, but also "Who Will Love My Children". Watched it years ago when I was about 20 with my then teenage sister. Probably an awfully cheesy film but we wept. True story about a dying woman trying to find good homes for each of her many children. Each time one child left came more tears. From hard-hearted, self-centred teenagers (ish)!

whattheactualfuckery · 20/06/2019 22:52

East Lynne ~ watched as a child with my dm, we both ugly cried.
Betty Blue ~ tragic
Click ~ ugly cried towards the end

theSnuffster · 20/06/2019 22:57

Titanic makes me cry, and Armageddon. Both from when I was a teenager though, I don't tend to watch sad films very much.

I'll never watch the good dinosaur again. I found it very sad of course but what really broke me was that it made my daughter cry! She was only about 4 at the time and I was just overwhelmed at how emotional she got. It was almost like I felt angry at the film for upsetting her like that?!

theSnuffster · 20/06/2019 23:02

I've made myself cry just thinking about it! I'm very tired ....

runningtogetskinny · 20/06/2019 23:06

Brokeback Mountain - couldn't even talk about it for days! I very rarely cry but the utter tragedy of this just got me. I Daniel Blake also reduced me to tears

WhentheRabbitsWentWild · 20/06/2019 23:14

The Lovely Bones

salsmum · 20/06/2019 23:16

Ghost always makes me cry and Hatchi
Me and my DP cried most of the way through. Schindler's list is another.

salsmum · 20/06/2019 23:16

Inside I'm dancing is another

OccidentalPurist · 21/06/2019 01:05

The English Patient- I watched it with my DH on Valentines Day and collapsed sobbing on him - not the intended outcome!

Also Finding Nemo. I'd had an ectopic pregnancy followed by a. miscarriage and this film came out when I was in my 3rd trimester with my DD (now 12). She was like the little egg in the film that survived 😃

wendywoopywoo222 · 21/06/2019 01:32

The last snows of spring had me sobbing in the cinema when I was about 12. Never forgotten it.
Awakenings. The usher asked me to sob quietly.

Defenbaker · 21/06/2019 02:10

@lildevil - yes, Departures is a great film. Very unusual, and gives a good insight into Japanese culture too.

Other sad films that I "enjoyed" (if that's the right word):

Life is Beautiful
The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas
Angela's Ashes
Inside I'm Dancing
Mayerling

I even cry at certain adverts. The John Lewis one featuring Elton John really got to me - the look on his mother's face when she realises the piano was the perfect gift for him. It reminded me of my Mum, and all the effort she made to make Christmas special. She's been gone 3 years now, but certain things are still very triggering for me.

cavalier · 25/06/2019 21:49

Dead Man Walking affected me deeply
Ugly cry .. the lot lol

mollymawk · 25/06/2019 22:07

I’ve seen many films that have made me cry, but one that was so bleakly heartbreaking that I couldn’t even cry at all was Bicycle Thieves. Brilliant, but so sad.

DinosaursWouldEatYou · 02/07/2019 17:58

PS:I Love You- I was laughing then crying then laughing.... oh it was a rollercoaster.

Pretty much any Pixar film especially Toy Story 3 and Finding Dory.

When A Monster Calls

I'm such a big softy though so it doesn't take much.

smileannie · 05/07/2019 02:12

The Colour Purple, even DH and DB were sobbing their eyes out.

Greensleeves · 05/07/2019 02:28

The Browning Version
Raise the Red Lantern

TanteRose · 05/07/2019 02:43

someone upthread also mentioned it, but Grave of the Fireflies (Ghibli Studio animation)

It is shown every August on tv here in Japan and I am crying within 30 seconds of the film starting Blush

its devastating Sad

tryingtobebetterallthetime · 05/07/2019 02:51

Love Story with Ali McGraw and Ryan O'Neill. A real oldie from 1970. I was a teen and I thought Ali McGraw was the most beautiful woman ever. So sad. A real tear jerker.
