Saw this yesterday, what a great film. Not a laugh a minute, in fact really no laughs at all. Both women are shown as real people, really interesting portrayal of them as trapped in their destiny.

Really want to watch this! Thanks for the reminder!

beanaseireann · 04/01/2019 19:55

Looking forward to seeing this. I get mixed up between Mary Queen of Scots and Queen Mary 1 - Elizabeth1 half sister.

MargueritaPink · 05/01/2019 23:35

I saw the trailer tonight. Mary has been a ridiculous Scottish accent which has put me right off seeing it.

And the historical accuracy looks questionable. Mary and Elizabeth never met.

MargueritaPink · 06/01/2019 02:43

Mary has been given.....(obviously)

chemenger · 06/01/2019 02:54

I didn’t think her accent was that bad (I am Scottish). Probably not historically accurate, but it’s not a documentary. Mary probably had a peculiar accent to the Scots ear in reality, having spent her childhood speaking French. They all speak English with Scottish accents in the film rather than Scots so not accurate anyway. David Tennant’s John Knox is excellent and his accent is fine Smile.

Is this a cinema film or a Netflix film?

beanaseireann · 06/01/2019 10:43

Cinema

Blueemeraldagain · 06/01/2019 10:46

I know this is kind of asking for a spoiler so PM me if you want to chemenger but do Mary and Elizabeth meet in the film or is it part of a dream sequence/something else not real? That part of the trailer really put me off as I think the two women never meeting is pivotal to their story.

KatherinaMinola · 06/01/2019 10:51

I didn't realize they never met!

MargueritaPink · 06/01/2019 10:53

As you say Mary lived in France. She didn't come to Scotland until she was 19 when she arrived with French courtiers. Giving her a Scottish accent turns it into Braveheart 2. No thanks.

Grace212 · 06/01/2019 11:03

suspect my mum (80) will want to see this but we are careful what we watch at the moment as dad died recently and obvs this is not a cheerful one.

is there a lot of blood? Do they mumble? These two things will put mum off a lot! Thanks.

MrsJayy · 06/01/2019 11:09

Mary Queen of scots in the cate Blanchete film is Kathy burke with no french accent so that kind of thing doesn't bother me I am going to see it midweek and looking forward to it.

No accent would be fine or as in The Death of Stalin or Dangerous Liaisons letting actors use their own accents is fine. A fake and historically inaccurate Scottish accent isn't.

chemenger · 06/01/2019 11:57

When she was in France she had a Scottish court with her and is known to have spoken Scots (according to Wikipedia). So she spoke the language with native speakers.

Grace there is a lot of blood in one very graphic scene, and quite a lot of violence. It is by no stretch of the imagination a gentle or jolly film.

OP posts:
MrsJayy · 06/01/2019 12:04

Well they had the Auld Alliance between Scotland and france so as just said they were in and out of each others court all the time so accents wouldn't be as we expect. I like a historical film I am fine with it having artistic license it is supposed to entertain us for a few minutes.

MrsJayy · 06/01/2019 12:05

A few hours obvs Blush

Silkie2 · 06/01/2019 12:08

I read the Mary Q of S was 6 foot tall. I hope they have someone tall and willowy for the part.

Grace212 · 06/01/2019 13:29

chemenger thank you, I will mention that.

MissSusanScreams · 06/01/2019 13:36

Kathy Burke was Queen Mary of England in Elizabeth. The one who was Elizabeth’s sister.

The Scottish accent puts me off too. Mary grew up in France from the age of three years old and had been queen of France for many years before she returned to Scotland.

I recommend the Lymond Chronicles for anyone who wants to find out more about her and Stuart era Scotland.

chemenger · 06/01/2019 13:58

To be historically accurate the Scottish court should speak the Scots language. This would be fairly incomprehensible to the majority of the audience. Better, I think, to have Scottish accents indicating their difference from the English court.
Grace as to the mumbling, I think that it is a bit mumbly at times.

She was queen consort of France for a year, not many years, she returned to Scotland at 19.

Have I died and gone to Heaven ?Smile

How is Mary QofS related to Elizabeth?

Why was Elizabeth not worried about her succession ?
Her father had been obsessed with his.

QueenOfTheAndals · 12/01/2019 21:22

How is Mary QofS related to Elizabeth?

Mary's father and Elizabeth were first cousins. Her grandmother was Henry VIII's older sister, which is how Mary's son eventually became King of England as well as Scotland.
