Saw this yesterday, what a great film. Not a laugh a minute, in fact really no laughs at all. Both women are shown as real people, really interesting portrayal of them as trapped in their destiny.

Google gets me this on the 'period scene' from a New Statesman review:

it is a quiet, candlelit moment in Mary’s bedchamber when, with her marmalade hair loose to her waist and clad in a creamy nightgown, she is washed by her giggly coven of gentlewomen. One of them remarks that she’s early getting her period, and a bit of blood splashes into a bowl. So. Not quite one for the smelling salts. It is about as shocking as a Calippo.

Prickle2 · 19/01/2019 15:23

Sorry to ask, but how can a woman function when she gets her own period if the sight of blood affects her that much? Just curious

NoIsACompleteButRudeSentence · 19/01/2019 15:38

The bill that declared Elizabeth illegitimate was never reversed, was it?

roisinagusniamh · 19/01/2019 15:39

Prickle, I am a bit odd. I'm menopausal, so no longer menstruating .
l suffered with heavy periods since the age of 14 and never coped well with during that time of the month ....used to faint regularly too.My mum put me on iron tabs .
Back to the film....

SouthWestmom · 19/01/2019 21:17

DS was an extra in this so I'm going to go and watch through my fingers if it's really gory !

lucydo · 19/01/2019 22:58

I've just seen it with my DH. He thought it was great. I thought it was stupid and just plain boring. And colour-blind casting really irritates me. And poor David Tennant channelling Tim the Enchanter under hair extensions and a silly hat. I can't remember when a film annoyed me more.

sportinguista · 20/01/2019 14:57

Having read the reviews on IMDB I will be re-reading my copy of Jean Plaidy as it will be clearly a better use of my time.

SheWoreBlueVelvet · 21/01/2019 20:38

Just seen it. Very beautiful film but not particularly gripping. I kept waiting for something but it was mostly shots of castles and endless messages on horseback. The murder is a bit gory but that’s it.
I did think the oral sex scene was a bit shit. Don’t really need to see a close up of of a woman’s face enjoying sex. So what. Was that supposed to be the reason she married him, because he gave good head? Cross because now unsuitable for my class.

cafesociety · 22/01/2019 19:50

I enjoyed the costumes, the settings and scenery, the drama of it all. I thought Margot Robbie was the most impressive. On the whole enjoyed it.
However there was a lot of conversations between the actors I couldn't quite catch, so lost some of the content due to the actors mumbling/not talking clearly/talking too quickly [especially David Tennant]. It was annoying.

hopeishere · 27/01/2019 21:39

We saw this last night and were unimpressed.

It was just a bit... boring. Nice scenery. Fantastic costumes. Margot Robbie is really good but it's mostly Saoirse Ronan. David Tenant looked ridiculous.

I take it the gay bit (the husband) is completely made up?

mizu · 30/01/2019 21:40

Gutted I've just seen this film is a 15. Was going to go and see it this weekend with my 2 DDs 12 and 14. And have just read this thread. Not going now.

hopeishere · 30/01/2019 21:51

It's definitely a 15 as well!! Cunnilingus and rape Shock

beanaseireann · 16/02/2019 14:36

I saw it. It was good. Saoirse Ronan and Margot Robbie were excellent.
I recognised David Tennant's accent and realised it was him under all that hair.
Hard to believe Margot Robbie is the same person who looked sensational in The Wolf of Wall St and is smallpox pock marked in this film. She is definitely not a vain film star.
The sex scene was gratuitous I felt.... yes Mary married him because ....Shock
The period scene was also gratuitous. Unless it was to remind us Mary was fertile while Elizabeth was not. Hmm
It's worth watching despite the many scenery shots and horses galloping.

QueenOfTheAndals · 16/02/2019 14:40

How is the Mary/Bothwell relationship depicted? I've found in fictions they're either passionate star-crossed lovers or he's a brute and a rapist.

beanaseireann · 17/02/2019 10:00

More brute than star crossed lovers.
Are you going to see it QueenoftheAndals?
I think I need to see it again.
To take it all in, now that I've read up on Mary's life.
I went to the film with no idea of Mary's life or position in regards to the throne of England.
She was but a footnote in our history lessons, in Ireland.

CoolCarrie · 17/02/2019 13:20

Mary ruled with her heart, Elizabeth with her head, and that was Mary’s downfall.
Mary should have gone back to France instead of going to England when she went on the run. Her mother in law was Catherine de Medici who surely would have welcomed her back, although the Medici were a strange family.
If they had met things may have turned out differently for Mary, however I think her son James would still have been King of England, as well as Scotland.
