Such a spell binding film. First film I’ve been to in ages where the audience still remained seated until the very end of the credits. Casting was amazing, cinema was full and everyone was commenting on how great it was. Thoroughly recommend it!

I thought it was a good film. My only complaint was that the wigs were grim.

Agreed that the actor who played Brian May was excellent - I have met, albeit briefly, the god that is Brian May, so I know what I am talking about.

donajimena · 02/11/2018 17:35

Saw it today. Loved it. The reviews got it so wrong.

AlexaShutUp · 03/11/2018 21:10

I've just watched it this afternoon with 13yo dd. It was bloody fabulous, but oh my god, I just cried all the way through. Emotionally draining but one of the best films I've seen in years.

Freddie was a genius, so sad that he died so young. What a life, though!

brittanyfairies · 04/11/2018 15:31

I've just been to see it with my DCs 14 and 16 and we loved it.

I also loved the Mike Myers joke and was the only one in the cinema who gave a snort of laughter, but I'm not in the UK so thought it was the Frenchies not getting the cultural reference

EdWinchester · 04/11/2018 18:05

I am so glad I didn't listen to the critics and did listen to MN and rl reviews.

It's a brilliant film - even if you weren't a Queen fan (me).

I want to go back to 1985 and tell my 15 year old self to watch Live Aid! Can't imagine why I didn't.

chemenger · 04/11/2018 18:12

Thank you, all PPs, I might have believed the reviews and given the film a miss if it hadn’t been for you. I don’t know what fi,m the critics were watching. Night at the Opera was the first album I bought, I know every word of it, and I remember watching Live Aid, Queen were so good compared to most of the performers.

2128Cl · 04/11/2018 18:23

It's not perfect but it's still a good movie. I think I might go see it again.

Rockbird · 04/11/2018 23:15

Just got back. Fabulous film. And totally agree about Gwilym Lee being more Brian May than Brian May is!

AlbertWinestein · 05/11/2018 03:00

I thought parts of it were great. I loved that Kenny Everett made a part in it and the scenes with his family. But ultimately, the movie was saved by the entire Live Aid scene so you left on a real high.

A lot of the critics make a fair point.

Santaclarita · 05/11/2018 06:11

The critics are idiots these days. Seem to think every film must be Oscar worthy. This film isn't but that's not the point of it. It's to tell the story of Queen and entertain people, just like they did. It was brilliant.

Groovee · 05/11/2018 07:05

We loved it as a family. Had to wait on Dd being home so we could go.

AngelsWithSilverWings · 05/11/2018 08:27

Went to see it with DH - a big Queen fan and DS13. Absolutely loved it. Enjoyed the subtle little in jokes - especially the scenes with Mike Myers.

The live aid scenes were amazing to me and I just felt so emotional watching it. DS enjoyed it but was a bit critical of the quality of the CGI in the lWembley crowed scenes. I didn't notice anything.

There will surely be awards galore for this film and the cast.

Rockbird · 05/11/2018 10:45

The CGI was surprisingly crap for this day and age. It really looked awful and I'm not generally picky about that sort of thing but it jarred.

CaptainKirksSpookyghost · 05/11/2018 11:36

The live aid crowd didn't look like it was from 1985 either.

My main issue was that it didn't show how close the band were in the 70s, so the impact of Freddies increasingly extreme lifestyle in the 80's didn't come across for me.
Having more of a stark difference would have been better.

StorminaBcup · 05/11/2018 11:43

I went to watch on Saturday night with a friend - I was surprised how busy it was! I thought the film was good, slightly cheesy but then it's Queen. I have to say although I thought Rami Malik was great as Freddie on stage, I thought the tooth-sucking at the start was a bit OTT. I'm glad he got used to them by the end. Agree that the CGI was crap but at least it conveyed the enormity of the gig. I remember watching live aid as a kid although I was more excited about Madonna live from Philadelphia! The Mike Myers joke went over the heads of everyone in our cinema too Grin

TheyBuiltThePyramids · 05/11/2018 11:54

I absolutely loved it but DID find it had a bit of a homophobic tone. I thought there was a strong sense throughout the film that Freddie was led astray by "the gays" and should really have stayed with Mary. I cried at the end. The portrayals of the band were just brilliant.

Theyprobablywill · 05/11/2018 11:57

It was fun, but not great. My favourite bit was the cats. I would have happily watched 90 minutes of the cats. Brian May was excellent, but every time Freddie spoke I thought of John Hurt in The Elephant Man.
The multiple and deliberate close ups of 'black people in the enjoying themselves' in the Live AId audience was a bit annoying, Live AId was conceived, ran by, and performed by, almost exclusively, white men for a largely white audience, and did far less good than we were led to believe. And how come no mention of Sun City?

CaptainKirksSpookyghost · 05/11/2018 12:09

how come no mention of Sun City?

Because the movie was very selective and whitewashed quite a lot of stuff. Squeaky clean Brian May's affair didn't get a mention and Rogers womanising was only implied too.

They were a late edition to live aid, not because they played sun city the year before and Geldof quite correctky was unsure of the bad press but because Paul Prenter didn't tell Freddie about it.
And they practiced for months not to try and make up for Sun City, but because Freddie knew he had aids.

spookyspookyspookhole · 05/11/2018 12:20

Who else came home and watched Live Aid

chemenger · 05/11/2018 12:46

We watched Live Aid too!

Rockbird · 05/11/2018 13:30

Yes watched Live Aid and am now watching the Wembley show whilst killing myself trying to hang curtains

Igotmylipstickon · 05/11/2018 14:15

Saw it and loved it too. Only real criticism, apartment from timeline being off, was that the Live Aid crowd looked wrong. (I saw Live Aid live in 1985).

Its very interesting the parallels here - Bohemian Rhapsody - the song didn't - go down all that well with the critics, however the general public loved it. Same here with the film.

Igotmylipstickon · 05/11/2018 14:15

"apart from" not "apartment" :-)

spookyspookyspookhole · 05/11/2018 16:46

Been listening to queens greatest hits too😃 I thought that the teeth were very distracting to begin with.

DH didn't get it but I found it all very upsetting. The isolation and loneliness, the man who didn't know who he was- extrovert or introvert, gay or bisexual? Persian or British?

I loved the cats. Reminded me of my house 😬😬😬with the decor and fag ends obviously

chemenger · 05/11/2018 17:46

Bohemian Rhapsody has topped the box office here in the US on its opening weekend. We say it in a big IMAX theatre and it was totally sold out all weekend. It was reviewed badly here too. The critics seem to miss the point that it is an entertaining film, not s hard hitting documentary.
