I would say Halloween (1978)

Opinions?

For me, Event Horizon. Thinking about it now gives me deep dread.

John Carpenter's The Thing. Still holds up pretty well today.

DoYouLikeBasghetti · 22/10/2018 18:15

Japanese Ring

RadioDorothy · 22/10/2018 18:18

I'm always looking for new recommendations - I'm not interested in gore or torture and sick things like the human centipede, but I loves me a really scare. I lived The Ring, The Grudge, and Martyrs, but most horrors are crap these days. So disappointed with Slenderman, it looked promising but it was so dark you couldn't see what was going on.

Open to new ideas...havent seen event horizon, it looks a bit sci-fi to me??

RadioDorothy · 22/10/2018 18:19

*really good scare

RadioDorothy · 22/10/2018 18:19

*loved. FFS

EllenRipley · 22/10/2018 18:20

Carpenter's Prince of Darkness is pretty damn good too.

Jacob's Ladder
Hellraiser
The Exorcist
Insidious

Zoomzoomzoomzoom0 · 22/10/2018 18:24

Have you watched the Invitation on Netflix? Not strictly horror but very tense... Brings a new meaning to trapped by manners! The classics are great, The Shining, Psycho. I loved The Descent. Also saw one recently with Cersei Lannister, where everyone was being replaced by mirror people.... It was surprisingly good! Can't remember the name...

TheDeadlineIsFriday · 22/10/2018 18:25

Another film I found very unsettling was the Spanish film •REC

Zoomzoomzoomzoom0 · 22/10/2018 18:25

Or her name either for that matter...

SpunBodgeSquarepants · 22/10/2018 18:27

Sinister - I'm usually fine with horror films but this one really got to me, I think the soundtrack with the death scenes worked a little too well.

TellMeDinosaurFacts · 22/10/2018 18:28

Not a film as such but I think The Haunting of Hill House on Netflix is extremely good. I don’t do gore but the atmosphere, evocation of the classic haunted house trope and psychological drama is brilliant.

Getoffthetableplease · 22/10/2018 18:34

The Babadook completely freaked me out, and I still have nightmares about The Strangers (although that's not a supernatural one)

Getoffthetableplease · 22/10/2018 18:36

I'm really enjoying the Haunting of Hill House too, TellMe, find it like a freaky horror version of This is Us Grin

iklboogiemanunderthebed · 22/10/2018 19:19

The Conjuring films are good. Scared the bejesus out of DH 😄

LaurieFairyCake · 22/10/2018 19:31

Dracula with Keanu Reeves/Gary Oldman

It's decades since I watched it but I reckon I can remember most scenes in it - really beautifully shot

Not scary though

lavenderbongo · 22/10/2018 19:36

Coherence - fab premise and brilliantly executed. No gore but terrifying idea

TellMeDinosaurFacts · 22/10/2018 22:57

Yes! I watched Coherence while slightly delirious in the newborn-sleep-deprivation phase a couple of years ago. It still haunts me now!

PourSomeSugarOnMoi · 22/10/2018 23:26

Scream

SoupMode · 23/10/2018 00:02

The Shining

gelert5619 · 23/10/2018 00:17

Black Christmas with Olivia Hussey. Early 1980's
I don't smoke but smoked x4 during that film!
Seen it since and still very scary.

SecretWitch · 23/10/2018 00:21

I loved both Halloween and Halloween 2 ( the originals)

I was very frightened by the premise of a Nightmare on Elmstreet as a teen

Choccywoccyhooha · 23/10/2018 00:21

The Shining is horror perfection.

ILikePaperHats · 23/10/2018 00:23

'Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer'. The depravity of the characters stay with you ...
