I'm a horror junkie and these are some of my favourites:
The Shining- Still iconic and disturbing
The Thing- Amazing practical effects, one of the first horror films I ever saw (at age 10!). It terrified me but got me hooked.
House of 1000 Corpses- Trashy B movie gore fest that manages to be genuinely nasty and frightening.
The Babadook- Excellently shot, scripted and acted. Felt very close to the knuckle when I watched it as I had PND
The Children- This is a relatively little-known British horror film that is incredibly upsetting, scary and disturbing. I watched it before I had kids and don't think I could watch it now. If you really want to ruin your day, this is the one for you.
Hellraiser- Just hearing the theme music makes my skin crawl.
Get Out- Absolutely gripping, tightly plotted and politcal.
Deathgasm- This is a NZ comedy horror film about teenage metal band who accidentally summon demons. Really fun to watch.
The Greasy Strangler- Easily the most disgusting film I've ever seen. Amazing soundtrack. 10/10 would recommend,do not watch whilst eating. Will put you off fried food for life.
Evil Dead 2- Classic, disgusting and very funny.
Vampire's Kiss- Nicolas Cage turns it up to 11 in this. It's very funny but also quite scary in the portrayal of a young woman being horribly bullied by her boss.
What We Do In The Shadows- Okay it's a comedy, but they use their special effects so well and the sequence where Nick is being chased through the house by the vampires is brilliant.
Under the Shadow- Quite similar in feel to the Babadook, this is a very disquieting film set in Iran, about a woman and her daughter, stuck in their apartment whilst the bombs fall and an evil spirit terrorizes them. Like the Babadook, it has a uniquely female, political feel. Highly recommend.
Hereditary- Pretty unhinged.
It (2017)- Really enjoyed this, got some horrible moments and the kids are great in it, especially Bev, Eddie and Ritchie.
Drag Me to Hell- More Sam Raimi grossness with a flawed heroine who isn't afraid to get her hands dirty.
Braindead AKA Dead Alive- Believe this holds the record for most fake blood used in a film? It's gloriously, hilariously disgusting and in appalling taste.
The Wicker Man (70s Edward Woodward version, not the Nic Cage dogshit)- I watch this once a year, it's beautiful, unique and influential on so many films that came after it. I listen to the songs on the soundtrack an awful lot too.
The Cell- Terrible casting (Vince Vaughan and J-Lo ffs), but the cinematography and costumes are gorgeous and borrow a lot from contemporary and classical art, so I love to watch it just for that.
