I saw this yesterday and thought it was wonderful. I found it both moving & very tense which is an extraordinary achievement when we all know the outcome as these events happened 50 years ago.
I highly recommend it. In the interests of full disclosure, I am a huge Ryan Gosling fan Grin

For balance - I've liked RG in everything I've seen him in until this. I did enjoy seeing the enormity of the achievements of NASA but blimey the film was dull. The sound was appalling and far too mumbly.
If there had been aliens on the moon, old Neil would have stared them moodily to death! Sorry @infinitevariety 😶

InfiniteVariety · 18/10/2018 12:39

oh dear MurphyBrown it's as if we saw 2 different films! I certainly didn't find it dull, though I agree there were audibility issues. One of my favourite films is "Apollo 13" and I have read Jim Lovell's book "Lost Moon" on which that film is based, so although I already knew a lot about the events in "First Man", it didn't stop me finding it tense & quite heartbreaking eg the fire on the launch pad which killed 3 astronauts.

I saw it the other night. It was ok. Far too long though! They could have made it 30/40 minutes shorter and still capture the detail.

Vitalogy · 20/10/2018 16:34

I saw it the other day, I liked it a lot too. I thought the sound really showed the power and violence of the rockets blasting off.
Also, how claustrophobic the capsules were. They were very brave.

Ryan Gosling came across as subdued but that's how Neil Armstrong seemed, in interviews anyway. A humble man with integrity.

theboxofdelights · 21/10/2018 09:45

I thought it was dull, and 30/40 mins too long as well, far too much cockpit rattling and flashing, must have been 30/40 mins worth of that alone.

DD was bored, soon to be ex came with us and he loved it. He is a lot like how NA was portrayed in terms of persona, work focused subdued loner, very similar line of work. Told me that the 🚀 shown in the film was the wrong version Hmm! He will probably be right but I didn’t need the interjection.

2/10 for me, I would have left if I had been on my own,

Loved Claire Foy though.

borntobequiet · 21/10/2018 09:48

Very good throughout, got period detail right (not sure about rocket but all else spot on) not too long as far as I was concerned. Two leads excellent.

sakura06 · 23/10/2018 21:14

I didn't enjoy it that much. It was fairly interesting in parts, but of course, there's no jeopardy as we know what happens. It did make me realise all the preparations that had gone into the missions though. I would've liked to have known more about the financial cost.

Furrycushion · 23/10/2018 21:17

Oh, it was looooong. Not a patch on Apollo 13.

MrsGrindah · 23/10/2018 21:20

I was so disappointed in this film! Far too many shots of frantic switch flicking and cockpit shaking. Also Buzz Aldrins part hugely underwritten. RG looked pissed off all the time. And far too long.Kept thinking it was about to end but no.......

theboxofdelights · 23/10/2018 21:22

frantic switch flicking and cockpit shaking .... RG looked pissed off all the time

sums it up in 13 words, no more required.

MrsGrindah · 23/10/2018 21:30

boxMy Work here is done Grin

theboxofdelights · 23/10/2018 21:34

Wine for you Mrs, if I had read that before I booked I might have saved myself £29 (flipping heck when did the cinema get so expensive I ask myself).

Girlwhowearsglasses · 23/10/2018 21:37

I quite liked it. I found it quite meditative.
I went to a subtitles showing though - which I now quite enjoy. I may have missed stuff if not though

AnonaMouse1 · 23/10/2018 21:40

His 2 sons were very involved with it, ensuring Ryan Gosling got their dad just right

I liked it. The rockets all looked so amateur and unsafe compared to modern day vehicles

VanillaSugary · 23/10/2018 22:21

Would an 11 year old boy enjoy it?

Girlwhowearsglasses · 23/10/2018 22:29

Yes my ten year olds loved it. They have seen Apollo 13 and 2001 etc already so they know the genre

JuneFromBethesda · 25/10/2018 22:29

Just back from seeing this. I was SO BORED. Like boxofdelights I would have walked out if I’d been on my own. No redeeming factors for me at all except perhaps the score. At one point we could hear strains of ‘We will Rock You’ coming through from the Bohemian Rhapsody showing in the next screen and oh how I wished I was in here instead!

Dullest film I’ve seen in ages. How could they make something as amazing as landing on the moon so boring? I fell asleep at one point and when I woke up nothing had happened 😴

CoolCarrie · 28/10/2018 10:53

We watched it last night and it was excellent. DS read the book on which it was based and says that Armstrong was a man of very few words, so RG captured that well, Claire Foy was good too. I thought it was great, showing the USA at its best.

CoolCarrie · 28/10/2018 10:57

The fact that humans didn’t fly until 1903 and this was only 60years after that is quite remarkable.

RagingWhoreBag · 28/10/2018 11:09

It was looooooong! And yes, too much rattling and roaring - it felt like it was made for 4DX (although I would have hated to be shaken around quite that much!)

It was interesting to learn a little bit about his personal life and why maybe undertaking such a risky mission was something he was prepared to do. I liked Claire Foy too, but would have liked to get to know Buzz and the others a little better.

Looking forward to We Will Rock You.

burnoutbabe · 30/10/2018 15:12

saw it last night and agree with most, sooooo boring and uninvolving.

And so mumbly, so you couldn't catch what people were saying.

I would have left (unlimited pass) but it was 1967 and i knew the end was coming sometime soon.

Mitsouko67 · 04/11/2018 17:17

DH liked it best, I enjoyed it but thought it a little slow moving /long, DS14 andDS 10 were very bored. I thought it would be a nice family movie we could all enjoy. Not many of those unfortunately.
