Following on from the recent thread about favourite actors from old films, @FatBallsAndSunflowerSeeds had the fab idea of an old movies appreciation thread... So here it is! If you like old films and actors of any kind, come and join us.

old thread

We thought we'd look out for any classic films being shown on TV, post them on this thread and then discuss them afterwards... But if you want to post about any of your favourite old films and actors at any time, that would also be fab. Basically, this is just a place to chat about old films - please come and join us!

I'm off to check the TV schedules for any potential gems coming up - I will post again with anything that looks good.

Meantime, here's James Cagney tap dancing down the stairs in Yankee Doodle Dandy - happy bank holiday everyone Smile

Thanks avva - I've got amazon prime (some great films included) but didn't know about the BFI thing. Will check it out.

It wasn’t me who mentioned Retro Films but thanks for the tip ppeat, I’ll check it out Smile

Happy birthday Katharine Hepburn born otd in 1907! I love this RKO picture of her from Little Women - she was so perfect for the role of Jo. I watched the Sky Arts Discovering... programme on her recently, it had quite a bit of Bringing Up Baby in it which is always a bonus!

They've added one of my all time faves on Netflix ..some like it hot.

Ventress · 12/05/2018 13:05

I love Katharine Hepburn. Happy birthday Kate Cake

I've read several biographies of her but this is my favourite Kate Remembered

I think her performance in The African Queen is my favourite though I love her films with Spencer Tracey of course.

I think Dorothy Parker was very harsh when she said that Katharine Hepburn "...runs the gamut of emotions from A to B"

I enjoyed Spellbound (love Hitchcock) the Dali sequences are, well surreal! Plus the added bonus of Gregory Peck and Ingrid Bergman Smile

answers the batphone

Thank you for the mention. I have been lurking on this thread, even if I haven’t posted yet. I’ve had a tiring morning, so wonder what I might find on the telly this afternoon ...

PrivateParkin · 12/05/2018 13:18

lol Monica I was wondering if you'd found it! The films board keeps far too low a profile IMHO.

Let us know if you watch anything good this afternoon!

Arf. Will do!

Ventress · 12/05/2018 14:36

DP is at the rugby club to watch the Heinenken Cup final so DS and I are going to watch Some Like it Hot on Netflix Grin

boldlygoingsomewhere · 12/05/2018 15:54

I’ve now set The Spiral Staircase and The Ghost and Mrs Muir to record. I kept missing the latter on Talking Pictures but thanks to this thread I’ve had a reminder. Smile

I love Katherine Hepburn - she is magnificent in The Lion in Winter.

CremeBrulee · 12/05/2018 17:26

Just watching An Affair to Remember - have found a nice little selection of classics on Sky Cinema.

I have How to Marry a Millionaire lined up for later.

PrivateParkin · 12/05/2018 18:29

Creme I watched An Affair To Remember recently as well. It's such a lovely film. I found Deborah Kerr a bit stiff at first but warmed to her as it went on. The bit where Cary Grant is waiting at the top of the Empire State building is totally tear-inducing!

There are some good classics on Sky atm aren't there? Sadly I'm having to watch the Ninjago Movie at the mo (although only half an eye on it really).

Ventress did your DS enjoy Some Like It Hot?

@BitOfFun Barry Fitzgerald he was a really good actor, not sure if I’m getting him mixed up with someone else, but did he star with James Cagney?
Possibly urban myth but the quiet man fight scene, was meant to be the longest in film history.
@PrivateParkin, thank for the thread enjoying it immensely.

dontcallmelen · 12/05/2018 20:09

Yy happy birthday Kathrine, my favourite is African queen I think.

dontcallmelen · 12/05/2018 20:21

@Graphista I think we have pretty much same taste in films I love the apartment, Jack Lemmon is one of my all time greats, also adore to sir with love, my DF loved all the old cowboy films especially Audie Murphy
Also really like Dean Martin, quite underrated I think.

PrivateParkin · 12/05/2018 21:03

Hi dontcallmelen I agree about The African Queen! I love Bogey as well, their chemistry is so good in it.

I've ended up subscribing to that blooming BFI played - free trial only, will have to remember to cancel it. I'm just watching Odd Man Out with James Mason - has anyone seen it? It looks pretty dark, possibly not what I'm i the mood for, but will stick with it...

PrivateParkin · 12/05/2018 21:22

BFI Player, stupid autocorrect

jugglingsatsumas · 12/05/2018 21:34

I love Odd Man Out but it is a bit of a strange one. You have to be able to empathise with a terrorist if I remeber correctly. His speech from Corinthians is worth sticking it out for.

MoreCheerfulMonica · 12/05/2018 21:47

I'm now watching The Killing Of Sister George on Talking Pictures.

dontcallmelen · 12/05/2018 23:16

Ooh killing of sister George, haven’t seen that for years Dora Bryan playing against type.

MoreCheerfulMonica · 12/05/2018 23:17

Beryl Reid but, yes, playing against type. It's the first time I've seen it. Brilliant.

Graphista · 13/05/2018 00:04

@dontcallmelen seems so. I was enjoying some like it hot earlier on Netflix although watching a modern/future (?) classic now - terminator 2 Grin

Might watch another golden oldie tomorrow.

PrivateParkin · 13/05/2018 00:12

Thanks satsumas yes you were correct - it was worth it. Very atmospheric and a bit err, unusual in places (conveying Johnny's - aka James Mason's - hallucinations for example) and full of suspense. I presume it's set in Belfast although it doesn't actually say so, and the shots of buildings destroyed in the terrible air raids, although not part of the plot, made a pretty grim backdrop. Not my usual thing at all (I'm usually all about the escapism) but I'm glad I watched it and James Mason was fantastic.

Monica I saw The Killing of Sister George advertised - sounds interesting - will record if it's on again.

Lol at Dora Bryan 😳
