Following on from the recent thread about favourite actors from old films, @FatBallsAndSunflowerSeeds had the fab idea of an old movies appreciation thread... So here it is! If you like old films and actors of any kind, come and join us.

old thread

We thought we'd look out for any classic films being shown on TV, post them on this thread and then discuss them afterwards... But if you want to post about any of your favourite old films and actors at any time, that would also be fab. Basically, this is just a place to chat about old films - please come and join us!

I'm off to check the TV schedules for any potential gems coming up - I will post again with anything that looks good.

Meantime, here's James Cagney tap dancing down the stairs in Yankee Doodle Dandy - happy bank holiday everyone Smile

I'm watching Conspiracy of Hearts. The suspense is killing me and I can't stop crying. Yet it's brilliant! Grin

Well I enjoyed that very much. Sylvia Syms was brilliant - well, all the leads were good, but the Yvonne Mitchell character was my favourite. The child actors were excellent as well.

Now, what shall I watch next?.... I still have Laura recorded and haven't watched it yet, but suggestions always welcome!

When you watch a 2nd 3rd 4th etc time

The bit when the door doesn't close properly

Then when the lorry won't start

Always get to me

PrivateParkin · 25/01/2019 15:16

Subtitles yes, you mean the door with the huge picture covering it?! I was shouting "The door! The door!!" at the TV!

One of my favourite films is on TCM right now. The Rebel with Tony Hancock, only decent thing he did!

SchadenfreudePersonified · 25/01/2019 19:41

Conspiracy of Hearts is wonderful! I thought I had it to record, but I was wrong - I'm going to see if it's on again soon.

It's what my mother would have called a "lovely film".

SchadenfreudePersonified · 25/01/2019 19:54

Watched "They Were Sisters"

Excellent stuff!

Was shouting at the screen - "Don't marry him, Charlotte - he'll break your heart!"

Did she listen? Did she bum!

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 25/01/2019 21:10

Did the relationship between husband and his eldest daughter make you squirm too Schaden? I couldn’t decide how much subtext I was inventing.

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 26/01/2019 17:59

Set your recorders, folks. BBC2 6:25am Sunday 27th Jan. The Man in the White Suit. Top stuff from Sir Alec Guinness!

SchadenfreudePersonified · 26/01/2019 18:03

Yes fleas - it was extraordinarily creepy and inappropriate. I felt he was grooming her to take her mother's place in the most incestuous way - especially as he treated the other children appallingly.

I don't know how much this would have disturbed contemporary viewers - or whether it's just the atmosphere that we live in now where there is a greater awareness of what can happen in even the most normal-seeming families.

Or perhaps people were really more openly demonstrative with their children then?

But it certainly was creeeeeeepy.

MissMatty2hats · 27/01/2019 00:41

@CharDeeMacDennis did you ever find out what your mystery film was called? Could it have been Leave Her To Heaven starring Gene Tierney? I'm a latecomer to this thread so sorry if you've put the fretting behind you and moved on!

CharDeeMacDennis · 27/01/2019 10:58

MissMatty Yes! That's the one! How fab to have got an answer after so long. Thank you, you film genius, you Grin

Had forgotten about this thread and now want nothing more, on this wet, windy Sunday, than to curl up and watch something old and noirish.

PrivateParkin · 27/01/2019 13:16

Shock that's amazing!!! Grin great work MissMatty!

I just looked it up and it sounds brilliant. So pleased the mystery has been solved Char Grin

Is on the Tube of You.

Am going to watch it tonight.

ChinkChink · 30/01/2019 10:47

@Davros >

The only decent thing he did? Hancock was one of the greatest comedians this country has ever produced, though his radio and TV output was superior to the films.

Heads up for one of my top ten movies of all time: A Matter of Life and Death, BBC2 Sunday 1:50pm. Powell & Pressburger's finest in my opinion.

Davros · 30/01/2019 13:54

We'll have to agree to disagree. I'm not a Hancock fan and, of course, his comedy is very dated now. 🎬

PrivateParkin · 30/01/2019 15:35

ChinkChink thanks for the heads up on A Matter of Life and death. BBC2 seems to be showing a lot more classics lately - perhaps the schedulers have been reading this thread?!
