Following on from the recent thread about favourite actors from old films, @FatBallsAndSunflowerSeeds had the fab idea of an old movies appreciation thread... So here it is! If you like old films and actors of any kind, come and join us.

old thread

We thought we'd look out for any classic films being shown on TV, post them on this thread and then discuss them afterwards... But if you want to post about any of your favourite old films and actors at any time, that would also be fab. Basically, this is just a place to chat about old films - please come and join us!

I'm off to check the TV schedules for any potential gems coming up - I will post again with anything that looks good.

Meantime, here's James Cagney tap dancing down the stairs in Yankee Doodle Dandy - happy bank holiday everyone Smile

Watched it this afternoon, what a film.

My whole family had a nap so I popped wonderful Life on afterwards, lovely afternoon.

Great thread by the way. Smile

All the 80s films about teens made by John Hughes - it's easier for middle-aged parents to understand their kids after watching these films!

PrivateParkin · 12/11/2018 13:21

Thanks for the heads up on The Red Shoes Bagel - and the description MrsC. I've never seen it and it's been on my wish list for a long time, so I'm more than happy right now. Looking forward to watching.

I love the sound of an afternoon of back to back classic movies. I'm quite envious as I can't usually watch more than one before the TV is reclaimed by someine wanting to watch some modern nonsense or other!!

Green for danger is on talking pictures this afternoon

PrivateParkin · 12/11/2018 17:52

Thanks Subtitles - I recorded it. I think it might have been recommended on the thread a while ago, not sure now. A great cast and the storyline sounds good - the TV guide described it as a thriller, not sure how accurate that is??

I need to arrange a day off now to catch up on all my viewing!

I have seen it many times Smile

Good that you have recorded it cos you will prob want to watch it again to see the sequence of events again

After you have seen the ending

PrivateParkin · 12/11/2018 18:52

Sounds intriguing!!

Oh, Green for Danger is a joy for the simple reason that it stars the utterly sublime Alastair Sim Smile

SubtitlesOn · 12/11/2018 22:27

Completely agree Halsall SmileSmileSmile

Bette Davis is my all time favourite film actress. I loved Now, Voyager (especially that ravishing outfit she wore when disembarking from the cruise liner with the stunning broad rimmed hat). Also Bette in All About Eve with George Sanders, Thelma Ritter and early Marilyn Monroe. There are some brilliantly sharp one-liners in it, expertly delivered.

Ghost stories - I vote for Dead of Night every time.

Sharing the love for All About Eve. There's a west end theatre production opening in February with Gillian Anderson in the Bette Davis role and Lily James as Eve. I've asked for tickets for Xmas, should be good!

PrivateParkin · 18/11/2018 11:33

That sounds excellent MrsC. All About Eve is such a fantastic film. I know it's all about the women really (especially Bette) but I absolutely love George Sanders in it - he was just born to play those scheming, manipulative characters, and he's so perfect in this. I think I'm due a re-watch!...

"Derby Day" just starting on TPTV. Proper Sunday afternoon classic!

BagelGoesWalking · 18/11/2018 18:48

MrsCholly iI'd like to go with my DD - tickets prices are eye watering!

Tonight Sun 18 at 22:10 - The Small World of Sammy Lee with Anthony Newley. I haven't seen it but a friend (who loves films) highly recommends 😬

Halsall · 18/11/2018 18:57

I think I've said this before on here but there's a fascinating book called All About 'All About Eve' , written by Sam Staggs, self-proclaimed super-fan. For all lovers of the film it's a great read - it gives the whole behind-the-scenes tale and has lots of interviews and background. Actually if anything there's possibly a bit too much minutiae, but it's great fun nonetheless Grin

MrsChollySawcutt · 20/11/2018 09:30

Klaxon! Splendour in the Grass on TCM right now. Gutted I missed this start of this one!

PrivateParkin · 20/11/2018 18:01

ChinkChink oh yes proper BBC2 nothing else to do at the weekend type material!!

Did you see the rest of Splendor in the Grass MrsC? I always think of Miracle on 34th Street whenever I see Natalie Wood. Beautiful actress 😍

If anyone's around and in a film-watching mood, the wonderful Fallen Idol is on Talking Pics at 5:55. Graham Greene wrote the screenplay (from one of his own short stories) and Carol Reed directed, so it's quality stuff.

Ralph Richardson stars as the butler in the grand house of a diplomat. The diplomat's small son is lonely and overlooked and comes to worship the butler, the only adult who pays any attention to him. But then things take an alarming turn.....

It's a great film, if you haven't seen it. Or even if you have!

PrivateParkin · 24/11/2018 16:43

That sounds great Halsall. I'm definitely in a film-watching mood. Thanks for the info Smile

A mention on Twitter of Talking Pictures screening Passport to Pimlico on Boxing Day reminded me that I fell off this thread weeks ago. Sorry!

I'm very excited to hear about the stage version of All About Eve and, even though it's unlikely. I'll be crossing my fingers that the bargain ticket websites may have tickets. Meanwhile, my current film obsession is Bohemian Rhapsody.

BagelGoesWalking · 29/11/2018 01:11

I never even thought to look for Talking Pictures in Twitter! Genius as I often miss things I might have liked.

LOVE Passport to Pimlico. Perfect Bixing Day film with a turkey & stuffing sandwich.

MoreCheerfulMonica · 29/11/2018 01:38

I don’t know whether TP are on Twitter - what I saw was someone encouraging all and sundry to watch Passport to Pimlico with their offspring over Christmas, to introduce the younger generation to classic British film!

BagelGoesWalking · 29/11/2018 12:06

They are - did a search and found them 👍

Davros · 29/11/2018 15:44

One of my favourite films is on today, "Night of the Demon" 9pm Talkingpics. I only read the thread the other day from top to bottom. I think this film was mentioned but way back.
