Has anyone seen A Wrinkle in Time?

I loved this book so much when I was a child, I was a bit of a sci-fi geek even back then. I've never thought of it as a film though, some book you read and think they would be a great film, but this always seemed to me to be better imagined inside the mind. I expect lots of other people thought the same because it's over 50 years since it was written and it's only just been filmed.

Anybody both read the book and seen the film? Would you recommend it or would I just be constantly fighting the urge to yell at the screen because it's wrong?

As an aside, I can't believe it was written in 1962. I read it again about 5 years ago because I bought the book for DS (he didn't like it) and it didn't really seem that dated at all.

I love the book, but haven't seen the film yet. DS really wants to see it, but I am doubtful that the book will live up to my imagination

It's out this Friday here (Ireland).

Rotten Tomatoes is giving it a very low score (40%), but I don't know whether to take that with a pinch of salt because the story wouldn't appeal to everyone.

I saw it today. I am very 'meh' about it. It looks beautiful but it's not that good.

The science bit is hard to understand (I had to read up to find out about that part).

And the dad was going to leave the brother behind. WTAF?!

I think I'll give it a miss then. I do quite fancy seeing Ready Player One. I've read the book and would imagine that it would be a reasonably good film so long as they don't get so overwhelmed with CGI that they lose sight of the story.

It's out here in the USA, haven't seen it yet as kids and I are listening to the audiobook and not quite finished yet....

I saw it yesterday and hated it. It was boring, I was ready to leave after 20 minutes but put up with it til the end because I thought dd would be upset if we left. When we got out she said she didn't like it either. I found the whole thing very weird, I hated the characters, especially the 3 women (witches?) not really sure what they were supposed to be but not a likeable character amongst them.

Wipsglitter, I was also a bit aghast that the dad was going to leave his son behind, it didn't paint him as a nice character at all - he was a bit of a dick really.

All in all it was a disappointing waste of money.

Really really loved the book. I am in two minds about seeing the film as I am afraid Disney will ruin it.

In the book he had to leave his son behind as Charles was already part of 'IT' and had be been taken away he would have died. Dad had to get Meg and her friend out though or they would have died with IT. Maybe that wasn't clear in the movie, I've not seen it yet as I love the book so much and worry that the movie won't live up to expectations.

I have seen it but haven't read the book, dd has been reading the book and was keen to see. It wasn't bad would be my summary.
Visually it was lovely and my dd 10 throughly enjoyed it. The plot seemed a bit weak but I haven't read the book so I don't know if that was the film or the book.
I agree with others dad seemed a total arse, he goes off, gets stuck somewhere else, abandons one of his children leaving his daughter to save them. The when he wanders back in his wife starts snogging him, I felt he deserved a good slap.
I thought the kid actors where pretty good. The morals are laid on with a trowel but it is a Disney film

It's not very good unfortunately. And we were really looking forward to it as well. My kids have read the book but I haven't and it seems like there was quite a lot missing that made it very patchy.

I just read the book as I’d never heard of it before, but won’t bother with the film. I found it a bit weird and preachy, maybe a hint of cult and yet another evil vs good story. I did like the character of Charles but that was about it.

There is an interesting video on YouTube featuring L'Engle's granddaughters (Lena Roy and Charlotte Jones Voiklis) and some bits of A Wrinkle in Time that didn't make it into the final book. I liked the book as a child, but some people have trouble with some of its religious content, so maybe that's why the Disney adaptation appears to be a little unclear (I haven't seen it yet). I'm sure the film is well intentioned, and worth a look.

I loved the book as a kid but thought the film was quite boring. The whole thing was very 60's and trippy. My 8yo said she enjoyed it, but she looked quite bemused by the experience. Does the book stand the test of time?
