Just watched this tonight and thought it lived up to the hype. Soairse Ronan was typically compelling. The relationship with her and her best friend, and her mother were the core relationships of the film. Much like real life teen experience the boyfriends superfluous. Greta Gerwig shines again, apparently she is from Sacramento and from the film/ cinematography it looks gorgeous. But perhaps a nostalgic coming of age yarn? Kinda warm hearted female centric film but has anyone else seen it yet and what did you make of it?

Delighted to hear you enjoyed it so much, I can't wait to go!

LassWiADelicateAir · 18/02/2018 22:06

I enjoyed it but it does not deserve a best director nomination far less to win.

Soairse Ronan and Laurie Metcalfe were excellent.

sakura06 · 25/02/2018 22:21

I loved it! I thought it was sweet, charming and funny. I was always going to like it though as I love films about high school and Greta Gerwig! I was also around Lady Bird's age in 2002, so the nostalgia was great.

fusushumi · 26/02/2018 19:43

Just seen it and I enjoyed it, though not as much as "The Shape of Water" which is the season's stand-out film for me.

Really?? My happiest teenage memories are all about the boyfriend I had in the 6th form.... first love and all that....

WipsGlitter · 27/02/2018 09:00

I was really disappointed. I don't think it's worth the hype at all. Much preferred Frances Ha.

eloisesparkle · 27/02/2018 19:21

I'm with you WipsGlitter
I don't know what all the hype is about.

eloisesparkle · 27/02/2018 19:22

Twas all right.

fussychica · 28/02/2018 08:35

I really liked it but don't think it's Oscar material. It's just a fun film with good acting.

macnab · 03/03/2018 00:01

Oh god I hated it! Tedious. Self-absorbed. And I didn't think Saoirse Ronan was that good in it. Nothing happens! And then it ends (spoiler alert) I absolutely loved Three Billboards and had high hopes for this but there's no comparison. This, in my opinion, was shit. Sorry!

powertripe · 03/03/2018 03:39

Pleasant and gentle, easy to watch and certainly took me back to life with a teenager! Didn’t seem very original and I kept getting reminded of Glee and Anne of Green Gables.

junebirthdaygirl · 03/03/2018 03:43

I was disappointed as so much hype. It was fine, easy watching but l didn't really care about her that much and wasn't emotionally involved at all. Not like with 3 Billboards. There was a lot of cliches which just annoyed me.
Friend raving about the Shape of Water. When snow melts l hope to see it.

BitOfFun · 03/03/2018 03:47

Perhaps you'll feel differently when it's no longer ice? Grin

powertripe · 03/03/2018 03:59

But it won’t have shape then will it?Smile

ladybird69 · 03/03/2018 04:28

Can you tell me about the shape of water is is scary?

ladybird69 · 04/03/2018 22:39

Anyone know if it’s scsry? Or just frightening? I can do frightening just not horror but sounds interesting

junebirthdaygirl · 05/03/2018 10:41

Fus you were right. Shape of water got best film. Anyone who has seen it loved it. Has anyone seen l'm out and is that scary? I hate scary movies so don't want to be caught out.

fusushumi · 05/03/2018 12:37

ladybird69 no "The Shape of Water" is not scary though there are a couple of scenes not for the squeamish! There's a separate thread about it which you can read to find out more if you want

ladybird69 · 09/03/2018 20:58

Thanks fus it looks really good so I’ll watch it now 😊

carrie74 · 11/03/2018 10:24

Watched this last night, thought it was lovely. Saw a lot of myself in the mother which made me cry, and desperately want to give DD12 a big hug and tell her how much I love her (which I did this morning, when she presented me with an amazing Mother's Day breakfast).thought Saoirse (sp?) Roman and Laurie Metcalfe were excellent. Oh God the airport scene [bawls].

Mistoffelees · 14/03/2018 23:02

Just got back from seeing this (late to the party) I enjoyed it, it reminded me of Juno in its quirkyness. But what was the story line with the drama teacher all about? Was he depressed, did he get help, did he ever come back?
