I've been visiting the cinema since I was very small and for me and my papa used to go to the cinema every week or ever other week, and now it's a once in a blue moon but Within that time an adult ticket has gone from about £5.00 to £12.00 ! ...
And the child teen and senior are terrible aswell , closer you get to londom and the tickets rocket to £14.00 !
im not suprised people pirate films or rather stick Netflix on rather than go to the cinema .

Will a trip to the cinema become a thing of the past or something only the rich can afford

I live equidistant between two Vue cinemas. A quick search has revealed that for two adults this afternoon to see Black Panther one charges £26 the other £11.

Graphista · 18/02/2018 09:35

Independant cinema here £6 a ticket, £4.50 for nachos and drink, and the ushers have a 2 strikes and you're out policy for nuisance customers - I love it!

Graphista · 18/02/2018 09:36

Oh - also 2 for 1 on Mondays, kids club sat mornings £1 a ticket (dd too old for this now but was great when she was younger)

Catatlarge · 18/02/2018 09:38

You can get free 6 months membership of the gourmet society. You get 40% off cinema tickets!!

I went to our local Cineworld cinema yesterday. This multiplex has recently been refurbished and one of the larger screens cut up into a number of smaller screens one of which we were in.

The screen had two enormous patches of red in each corner which, in dark scenes, obscured about 1/3 of the screen. The sound track of the screen next door could be heard, creating a rumbling sound throughout the showing. The green door exit signs cast an additional glow onto the screen. It was just crap.

We paid exactly the same amount to see this film as those shown in a larger screening room. £22.50 for 2 ( and that was with a discount.)

When I complained afterwards the manager said that the red patches were caused by the stair lights (no they weren't)and totally ignored the other complaints we made about the sound intrusion from the other screen.

After realising we weren't going to take it lying down he gave us 2 free passes to come back another time.

My DD who is at Uni in the midlands said she pays £5 a seat to see a film (Vue or some such company)

LoniceraJaponica · 18/02/2018 12:23

RowenaDedalus Sheffield should be on that list as well. I don't pay to park as it is in a shopping mall, and parking is free. DD just takes a bottle of water in with her, and maybe some popcorn she has bought elsewhere.

onemorecakeplease · 18/02/2018 21:47

How is Vue allowed to charge different rates for the same films?
Between £4 and £12???? That’s ridiculous

We all need to complain!

Especially those of us who don’t have another cinema nearby.

UnimaginativeUsername · 18/02/2018 21:52

It’ll simply be that the prices are set to be competitive in their local market. There are far fewer people who’ll spend £12 on a cinema ticket in Gateshead than there are in Edinburgh.

PaddingtonBearHardStare · 18/02/2018 21:53

Reel Cinema in Hull is £4 a ticket all day every day regardless of child/adult/concessions etc. We recently discovered this and stopped using the extortionate Cineworld

mollied · 19/02/2018 13:08

Its extortion and then if you want any food or drink you need to take out a mortgage! Your right I'm not surprised people illegally download or stream stuff, its more expensive than smoking at least you get a couple of days enjoyment out of a pack of cigarettes not just 2 hours!

southeastdweller · 19/02/2018 13:18

£4.99 here in Manchester at the Odeon and at all the Vue’s.

I don’t have money to burn so refuse to buy the food in cinematic rip off prices. If you can get the same food much cheaper at the supermarket, why would you buy it st the cinema?

BackforGood · 19/02/2018 14:20

No, I don't understand the people who pay £££ for things to eat and drink in the cinema.
I rarely do now, as I think it is generally too pricey, but also because I get irritated by other people's noise and phone use, but when I did go recently, I was stunned how many people pay out for the revolting hot dogs, drinks and buckets of popcorn.

iloveredwine · 19/02/2018 14:34

our local vue is £14 a ticket but the vue that just opened 3 miles away is £4.99! our one is half empty and the new one packed funnily enough!

LoniceraJaponica · 19/02/2018 15:24

I don't go to the cinema to eat. I might have a bag of sweets, but I'm there primarily to watch a film. Last weekend we ate before the cinema anyway.

RowenaDedalus · 19/02/2018 18:43

I always feel morally obligated to buy food (that's what I tell myself Grin) because they make their money on the food don't they, not on the films, so I always feel like I should buy the food to keep people in work. HA! Writing that out it sounds beyond ridiculous. Maybe it's because I luckily live by a very cheap vue though. And I love popcorn.

dottyaboutstripes · 21/02/2018 22:20

Went to Vue today (cardiff) and it's £4 here too. Can't understand why anyone goes to Cineworld/Odeon!

TittyGolightly · 21/02/2018 22:29

Always go to Odeon in the bay. Worth it to avoid the town centre! Never pay more than £6ish a ticket.

Starlight2345 · 21/02/2018 23:18

I went to the odeon the other day £8.50 for a child . Never mind adult . We do have a showcase near by . I am going to check prices following on from this thread

Fekko · 21/02/2018 23:24

Groupon has a 5 tickets for £25 deal and wowcher has a Vue ticket deal today too.

AbsolutelyCorking · 21/02/2018 23:26

I always get drinks and popcorn at the cinema. I hardly ever go because I’m not interested in many modern films so the popcorn etc. is part of the experience for me. I get cheap tickets through work and a discount on the food. Wouldn’t eat hot dogs though!

Clayhead · 21/02/2018 23:27

Our local independent is £3.50 for everyone on Sundays 😊

Vinorosso74 · 21/02/2018 23:34

Our local Odeon is about £7 Mon to Thurs outside school holidays but weekends goes up to about £12 for adult tickets and £8 child. That's in London.
I recently discovered a Vue (Wood Green) which is always £5.99 which even with bus fare added on is cheaper for the expensive times.
I was discussing this with DP who reckons Odeon have a lot of old cinemas so high upkeep costs whereas Vue are often newer so less upkeep? Who knows but yes it's bloody expensive. I always take water and our own snacks/sweets

itsbetterthanabox · 22/02/2018 01:01

@dottyaboutstripes
Vue is more expensive than the odeon near us. Both over a tenner Angry

TittyGolightly · 22/02/2018 08:25

I went to the odeon the other day £8.50 for a child . Never mind adult .

If it’s just me and DH, I do BOGOF with either meerkat movies or the times. Usually between £12 and £14 total.

If it’s me and my friend and our 2 kids we do a 2A, 2C. Usually that’s about £24-26 total. I use odeon points for popcorn and drinks for the kids.

heron98 · 22/02/2018 11:46

I used to go to the cinema all the time just by myself for something to do. It's just too pricey to do that now.

However I am very lucky to live near an excellent independent cinema that shows some great stuff and is only £6 so I go there now.
