"Horror" films for under-15s

Has anyone got any good suggestions for horror films that might be suitable for a fairly hardy and bloodthirsty 12 year old?

Nothing too humorous or cartoony. She'd like to watch a properly scary film. Any suggestions of something which would scary, but also age appropriate?

My absolute favourite as a kid was a film from the 80s called ‘The Monster Squad’. It was rated 15 at the time (but that was before 12 existed). I was about 10 when I saw it. A bit spooky, but not too terrifying. It may not have aged too well though...

Sorry re-reading your OP, that film is fairly ‘fun’, so maybe not quite what you’re after. Something about ghosts like ‘The Others’ (I am easily spooked by ghost stories)?

I was also going to suggest The Others, it’s a 12 and definitely a proper horror film.

Sleepy Hollow (the Tim Burton one) and Krampus are both rated 15 but might be ok, they’re quite “fun” horror rather than super scary.

My 13 year old loved The Sixth Sense. It blew her mind She also loved Cabin in the Woods.

She is not my child, I hate horror films.

It's a bit like a Gothic X Men Academy. A few scary baddies- a Slenderman monster and white eyed Samuel L. Jackson, but my impressionable 11yo DD coped with it all.

Poltergeist (2015) is a good one. It’s jumpy without gore.

The Others is terrifying! Also, there is a 70s/80s Disney film called Watcher in the Woods which is pretty scary.

Frozen.

Original poltergeist one or two, monster squad is good too. Halloween maybe? Scared the crap out of me but not gory or inappropriate, depends really

We've done Miss Peregrine, so might start with The Others and work our way up through some of the rest.

Not quite at the Halloween stage yet tho, I shouldn't imagine.

The Lost Boys has vampires, laughs and enough scares to be ideal for that age group. 1980’s certifying would likely be a 12 if released today. Great soundtrack too.

The Haunting? It's a 12, from the 90s, with Catherine Zeta Jones

BeetleJuice is a classic

I think alien would be good it's pretty gory but I was 11 when I watched it and it was great.

The Birds. Non-gory, but the 'it could possibly happen' thing scared the life out of me as a kid.

DD really likes horror (also 11 and with a bit of a slack dad who lets her watch stuff I’m a bit about) enjoyed A Quiet Place and Shaun of the Dead (bit sweary)
