I saw this today. I intially found it quite dull and was going to walk out.

But the ending more than made up for it and it was surprising to say the least.

It was quite gory, like Jack the Ripper gory.

Anyone else planning to see.

I saw it. I didn't know anything about it beforehand, but I have a cinema pass so go to see a lot of films!

To be honest, I saw the ending coming a mile off; both who the killer was, and the "incident" with the set at the end. I also felt there were points where it was needlessly gory; just gory for the sake of being gory, and really just a bit nasty. Wasn't overly impressed!

I saw the set bit coming but what I don't understand is why no one checked it first. Lizzie couldn't have envisaged them being so daft.

I dont get why the detective didn't just reveal the truth. Who was the real killer mattered not, he would have uncovered it and got his glory.

I think it should have been a straight to tv / dvd. Wasnt impressive enough for the big screen and it reeked of tv movie.

I enjoyed it as entertainment but looking back it didn't entirely make sense. Peter Ackroyd is a reputable writer though - I might read it and see it that hangs together better. I looked up Dan Leno, who was a real person, and although he played a lot of pantomime dames, I don't think (based only on Wikipedia) it was the sort of full on drag show they made it in the film. He did 'everyday working people' but the vast majority of them were male.

I thought the film was really excellent and actually not that gory but it might be that different things upset different people, I can’t cope with buckets of blood but this was more about implication I thought.

Is it okay to talk about spoilers here?

I see a couple of things have been mentioned so hopefully what I am about to say is all right.

I am confused whether or not Dan had any connection to the killings – we never saw his handwriting. And after what happened to Aveline, he will surely be hanged and have his name carved in stone alongside Lizzie’s?

I assumed what happened to Aveline was entirely set up by Lizzie and Dan, who I felt had a really powerful friendship.

I have confused myself further by reading the book though – where it looks more as though it wasn’t an accident and as if Dan has nothing to do with any of it.

But, it also tells us early on that Dan and Lizzie were born on the same day which to me underlined the idea that they are born under the same star and meant to be the absolute closest of friends.
