Favourite Uplifting Films?

What are your favourite, uplifting films - ideally which aren't too trite/glib/frivolous?

My wife's aunt has just been diagnosed with terminal cancer. She's gone from being an incredibly active, positive energetic person to very low, drained, and almost bed-bound.

She's been put on a drugs trial which has immense potential but then spent the weekend largely alone, suffered a fall, and watched bloody Dr Zhivago.

Now she's saying she doesn't want to go ahead with the treatment.

We are doing other things as well, but we've bought her a new TV and I'd like to get some DVDs for her. She's quite traditional, loves the classics etc, but is fairly open-minded.

Thanks a lot for any suggestions.

Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day. Set in 1920s (I think, might be 30s) London, great sets and locations, funny, romantic, great cast (Amy Adams, Frances McDormand, Lee Pace). My go-to feel good film.

That sounds lovely - thanks a lot. Never heard of it before!

'Untouchable' is one of the most uplifting films I've ever seen. It's about an unlikely friendship forming between a wealthy quadriplegic man and his new carer who has just been released from prison and is generally ne'er do well. It is funny and clever. It's a French film but has subtitles!

"Untouchable" looks excellent, and one that's definitely going on my watch list, but I might not buy it in this batch - I think there's possibly thoughts about being a burden already floating around, and although subtitles wouldn't normally be a problem in the slightest, it's amazing how everything is now incredibly tiring.

Thanks for the recommendation though - as I say: one I now want to watch.

I've ordered Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day, as well as some that might be a bit cheesy and outdated:
The Perks of Being a Wallflower
His Girl Friday
Big Fish
Sing Street
Billy Elliot
