I may see this tomorrow.

It is described as A pulpy, misogynistic B-movie refashioned into an explosive feminist revenge drama.

Sounds intriguing.

Having seen the original I disagree with the "pulpy misogynistic B movie" part Grin

LapdanceShoeshine · 14/07/2017 23:24

I mean my memory of the old one is of an 'explosive feminist revenge drama'!

It's weird because I'm sure I remember watching it with DH (because I'm not one for moody violent themes) but he doesn't remember it at all Shock

LapdanceShoeshine · 14/07/2017 23:28

I mean the Clint Eastwood original was 1971 - 46 years ago!

Most MNers not even born then I suspect Grin

NikiBabe · 14/07/2017 23:53

I haven't seen the original. I may see if it's available anywhere!

explosive feminist revenge drama sounds intruiging.

Just saw it.

Now that was a special breed of malice.

He had less to fear from the enemy.

Didn't he though! Shock

He was not a nice man of course but who was, then?

Since your OP I've read a good few reviews of both versions. The different handling of the slave issue & Civil War threat divides reviewers & general production values have changed hugely since the 70s. The old version is quite well thought of though.

He wasn't a nice man but I dont think he deserved that.

I loved his line "What have you done to me, you vengeful bitches!"

I thought it was nicely blackly comic. There was a fair amount of tittering at the viewing I was at when Martha said 'Bring me the anatomy book'. It wouldn't surprise me if that slipped into the language a la 'No wire hangers'. I'm curious now to see the original for a compare and contrast.

that's 2 hours of my life I won't get back again. So slow, lots of atmospheric shots of spanish moss and candlelight, which palled quite quickly. Lots of continuity errors, and why were their clothes always so clean, even when they were gardening? And why did they have an endless supply of them?
And the food! They're at the end of the Civil War and have cream? I loved the line 'I'll make a smoked ham' . Really ? For dinner that day?
Colin Farrell with gnarly hands and brilliant white teeth.
I know I'm supposed to see it as a feminist revenge movie, but it was so slow, there was no tension at all.

I thought the Corporal was ungrateful! They saved his life twice! He wouldn't have survived that broken leg without the amputation.

lucydogz · 21/07/2017 20:36

I don't think his leg needed amputating. The Nicole Kidman character did it to punish him
