I watched this in DVD today, in a suitably bleak and overcast Melbourne winter.

Very low key visuals, ordinary stuff of life. I found the whole dealing with the aftermath of a sudden death riveting, but imagine that's because I've had to it myself not so long ago. They didn't quite get the dead guy looking dead enough, but nice try.

Affleck is very good indeed.

The music is shite and intrusive. What are they thinking? I don't think I'd watch it again.

I thought it was abysmal. None of the charachters were sympathetic least of all the lying cheating nephew who didnt seem to care his dad died.

I liked it a lot, and thought this was much more Oscar-worthy than movies like the god-awful La La Land, or even Moonlight. I thought the acting was great, and I suspect that the main problem is that most people just don't want to watch a movie that's about grief and loss.

I loved the classical score! Thought that was the best bit of the film.

I saw it in a cinema when it came out. I thought it was brilliant- beautifully acted by all concerned, very moving and Affleck deserved the Oscar.

Just watched it,both dh and I LOVED it,thought it was superb.

Another one here who thought it was an excellent film. I thought Casy Afflect was fantastic, and I thought the relationship between himself and his nephew was really well acted out. Haven't watched anything as good since.

Script, acting and direction all excellent.

Long time since a movie affected me so much. Such a long film and so bleak in setting and subject matter but I was gripped. They say time heals all but this movie contradicted that so movingly. As all the other characters are moving on with their lives after such traumatic events, you hope right up to the end that the Casey Affleck character will do the same. I sat in silence for quite a while afterwards stunned by the ending. I’d chosen this dvd for a lounge around, pop corn and chocolate Saturday afternoon catch up with dd. So not an appropriate choice but neither of us moved to swap it for something lighthearted as it was so compelling.
That same weekend, I’d recorded a film called Broken, just because it starred Tim Roth. Don’t see much of him but what he’s in is always brilliant. Watched it on a whim late on the Sunday evening. Whew, another depressing but utterly compelling watch. Why has this film not got much attention? Talk about lives of quiet desperation. Such a horrific chain of events in an apparently everyday middle class suburb. Tim Roth so calm and capable as life implodes around him.

I loved it. Thought it was great and thought provoking. Sometimes you don't recover from a tragedy.
