My son wants to watch a "really scary film"

We tried a few of the darker Disney.... nope not scary enough... then went to explore a few other films, Jurassic park, ghost busters, pirates of the Caribbean, jumanji.. this is still not enough for him.

I need a film to spook him out a bit but not traumstise him... any ideas?

Labyrinth

Gileswithachainsaw · 04/06/2017 21:41

Gremlines?

Corpse bride?

Witches?

TheEagle · 04/06/2017 21:42

I was going to say Labyrinth as well!

Return to Oz is terrifying but maybe he's a bit young for that.

Yy to The Witches

Eveninties · 04/06/2017 21:45

Labyrinth is my all-time favourite film, wouldn't say it was remotely scary though...

Mothervulva · 04/06/2017 21:47

The Watcher in the Woods. Classic 80s film for kids. Quite scary in parts.

DukeOfBurgundy · 04/06/2017 21:48

Monster House
Small Soldiers

DukeOfBurgundy · 04/06/2017 21:48

Frankenweenie.

Believeitornot · 04/06/2017 21:50

Why would you deliberately let your 7 year old, who doesn't fully understand what they're asking for, watch a scary film?!

Do they have an active imagination? If so, I wouldn't.

Eveninties · 04/06/2017 21:50

Depends on your son, mine (5+6) have enjoyed just about all the films mentioned. They've also been to the Edinburgh Dungeons and loved it too!

Thisarmingman · 04/06/2017 21:55

The old version of A Christmas Carol. The ghost of Xmas future scared the crap out of me at that age.

Verticalvenetianblinds · 04/06/2017 21:56

The hole. Scared me!

My DH showed DS1 Nosferatu around that age. It's only a PG but scared him so much he made us promise we would throw it out, didn't even want a copy to be in the house. He found it a couple of years later and Couldn't believe we hadn't got rid of it and we had to go through the pretence of throwing it out.

BackAwayFatty · 04/06/2017 22:14

My 7 yeah old just watched Coraline & said it was creepy

longlostgin · 04/06/2017 22:20

Star Wars
Labyrinth
Never ending story?

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 04/06/2017 22:23

Has he tried Fantasia? My sister still can't watch it, she thinks it's really sinister.

Funnyfarmer · 04/06/2017 22:25

Another vote for coroline. Dd (6) loves films like this.
She Also loves. The corpse bride.
Nightmare before Christmas.
And the Wallace and gromit films. That penguin is so sinister.
Tv series. Goosebumps and doctor who

Funnyfarmer · 04/06/2017 22:27

The hole? Not a kids film is it?

scottishdiem · 04/06/2017 22:27

Dark Crystal - second that one!
Watership Down - totally second that one. Will not watch that now even some three decades later.
Raiders of the Lost Ark? Face melting scene was both freaky and cool when I watched it at that age.
Gremlins - also a good shout.
Neverending Story perhaps?
Corpse Bride?

Smellbellina · 04/06/2017 22:29

My 6 yr old loves a scary film, loves Coraline (it's a proper horror for children, who knew such things existed) and Jaws.
8 yr old hated both.
She loves Harry Potter too, the later ones get pretty dark.
Not fazed by Goosebumps or Ghost busters, too jokey.
Likes The Mummy.
How about going old school with Eerie Indiana?

Smellbellina · 04/06/2017 22:30

Corpse Bride is far too Sweet to be scary.
Indiana Jones is a good shout

Smellbellina · 04/06/2017 22:32

Oh she liked watcher in the woods too! It's quite atmospheric

llangennith · 04/06/2017 22:34

Snow White is pretty scary!

shipfaced · 04/06/2017 22:36

Some of these suggestions are not AT ALL suitable for a SEVEN year old!

Miss Peregrines is fucking terrifying with all the scenes of the bodies with their eyes plucked out. It is a 12 for very good reason!!!!!

RedastheRose · 04/06/2017 23:16

Coraline (properly freaks me out - sewing button to eyes)

Hocus Pocus (quite dark at points but funny too)

Another vote for Princess and the Frog (daughter still hates the bit where the voodoo man is dragged off to hell and she's 13)

Raiders of the Lost Arc in fact most of the Indiana Jones films have fairly scary bits in them.

RedastheRose · 04/06/2017 23:17

Oh yes I'd forgotten The Witches that is properly scary
