My son wants to watch a "really scary film"

We tried a few of the darker Disney.... nope not scary enough... then went to explore a few other films, Jurassic park, ghost busters, pirates of the Caribbean, jumanji.. this is still not enough for him.

I need a film to spook him out a bit but not traumstise him... any ideas?

Ghostbusters? The original is scarier than the sequels IMO.

Sgtmajormummy · 03/06/2017 09:42

Sorry, I missed it in your OP. Blush

DD was freaked out by the Voodoo Man in Princess and the Frog and still refuses to watch it 5 years later.
ET is a great film with the shocking scenes by the river and in the laboratory. I'd watch it with him as a special event.

The 1996 independence day? I was 7 when that came out, watched it when it came out on video. I honestly don't remember if I found it scary or what, but the other month my partner deemed it safe enough for our 4 year old, who then ran away screaming when the alien appeared

You can't go wrong with Indy. They can get violent but said violence is unrealistic and in a clear fantasy context.

For the most part the scares are thrilling/exciting rather than traumatic but Temple of Doom is noticeably more dark and sadistic. I'd be more cautious showing him that but there is an edited version reducing the most violent parts (rated PG -the uncut version is a 12).

Harry Potter? Though it may just be me who find them scary... (bit of a film wuss).

Star Wars is pretty scary with the bits involving the Sith.

PacificDogwod · 04/06/2017 21:18

Coraline.

Seriously, my now teenaged sons are still scared now...

Coraline gave my 6 and 8 year old nightmares for weeks. Horrible film.

annandale · 04/06/2017 21:22

Another vote for Coraline. You could have our copy, if i hadn't buried the bloody thing with garlic all round it.

PacificDogwod · 04/06/2017 21:24

It's the button eyes, isn't it?
You can have our copy too Grin

JillyBoel · 04/06/2017 21:24

Dark Crystal?

Eveninties · 04/06/2017 21:24

Gremlins? Monster house? The Witches is a particular favourite in this house.

Miss Peregrines? It's abit freaky, it's right up my 8 year old DS's street!!

Also loves goosebumps

Eveninties · 04/06/2017 21:26

I really enjoyed Coraline, as did my 5 and 6 year old DC's. Was very creepy. Possibly the kids were too young to understand how genuinely scary it actually was...

jmh740 · 04/06/2017 21:28

Another vote for miss peregrines
