Great films for a near 9 year old boy

My DS loves films but we feel that we are a bit of crossroads with him. He's seen most classic kids films but he seems to have lost interest in some as he says they are too babyish - i find most 12's too old for him with too much sexual content and violence.

Can anyone recommend a good film? he's not really into superheros although he loves star wars and the lego movies.

My son (just turned 9) enjoyed Sing and the Batman Movie at Easter. He is also keen on the How to Tame Your Dragon films and books.

Totally retro, but mine loved Clockwise recently.

Ds also finds Furry Vengeance hilarious, I can hear him laughing from three rooms away, it's a truly awful film by most people's standards though

APaperMe Ghostbusters is a 12A - the age rating was raised from PG due to some dodgy sex references (Stantz getting a blowjob, "I want you inside me" etc.)

The 12 rating didn't exist back in the '80's when it got a PG but the sex refs. were judged to be too much for PG under current guidelines in 2011.

These will probably go over the head of an 8 y/o but be cautious - the rating was raised for a good reason.

To be honest guitarguy2112 my Ds's favourites are the Austin Powers' films, which are a 15 I think and have far more sexual references than Ghostbusters, but I tend to watch films and judge whether or not I find them suitable rather than going off the rating. I don't mind him watching a bit of light hearted innuendo that probably goes right over his head anyway. Get why you mentioned it though as the OP did say no to 12s and sexual content, which is why I hadn't suggested Austin Powers amongst others .

Op, if he enjoyed Independence Day how about Men in Black?

Perhaps now is a good time to encourage him to read some books.
By his age I'd read my local library dry of Enid Blyton and a few years later was avidly tearing through all of Asimov's SciFi.
Sadly I couldn't recommend either author to a nine year old as Blyton has dated terribly and Asimov is a bit too dry for his age, but if you type into Google "Good books for a 9 year old boy" then you'll get some excellent suggestions.
Reading for fun beats watching a film by a country mile, as it expands the imagination and improves language skills.
As for getting him to think reading is going to be enjoyable...well...I have no answers other than choosing a book on a subject he likes and leaving it lying around.
As for films:- Honey I shrunk the kids, Home Alone 1,2,3,4, Jumangi and The Exorcist...yes I'm joking about The Exorcist.

Why don't you look for science fiction action films as the Transformers film series? They've got the Transformers (2007), Revenge of the Fallen (2009), Dark of the Moon (2011), Age of Extinction (2014) and The Last Knight (2017). I am sure he would enjoy it.

how about movies spun off from books to encourage reading. I like to get my children to read the book then they can see the film. Percy Jackson (2 movies, the Lightning Thief and the sea of monsters ) . The golden compass. ( obviously harry potter). InkHeart. Narnia books / movies. maybe The Hobbit

movies run out really quickly, if you can shoehorn in a little reading and it catches it'll help loads at school (duh) and keep hem busy for days on end. Try Stormbreaker movie (Alex Rider book series) . or The Black Cauldron /The Chronicles of Prydain books by Lloyd Alexander. There's lots for a 10 year old to get hold of there
