On March 26, a group of Mumsnetters and their guests were invited to attend an exclusive screening of Smurfs: The Lost Village in central London. Attendees and their DCs were not only given the chance to see the movie, but also to meet the characters themselves, and enjoy movie snacks and activity sheets.

Here is a short synopsis of the film, which stars Demi Lovato, Meghan Trainor and Gordon Ramsay: “A mysterious map sets Smurfette and her best friends Brainy, Clumsy and Hefty on an exciting and thrilling race through the Forbidden Forest filled with magical creatures to find a mysterious lost village before the evil wizard Gargamel does. Embarking on a rollercoaster journey full of action and danger, the Smurfs are on a course that leads to the biggest discovery in Smurf history!”

The film hits UK cinemas March 31 2017:

I'm really surprised to hear about the goody bags; in our row everyone seemed to be really calm and there were a couple of spare items.

What a shame if people did take more than the number of kids when they first got there.

~ What was your favourite moment in Smurfs: The Lost Village?

Probably the scene with the river and Gargamel, he was my favourite character when I watched it as a kid

~ What did your DC think of the film? Did they find it funny? Exciting?

My dc found it hilarious, there were some laugh out loud moments.

~ Having met all of the Smurfs, which one does your DC remind you of most?
Probably Brainy for DS and Smurfette for DD.

~ Would you recommend Smurfs: The Lost Village to your fellow Mumsnetters with younger DCs?

Yes it's a great film for primary aged dc.

~ Who was your DC’s favourite Smurf and why?

Smurfette I think as she is pretty tough.

~ Please also add your star rating for the film, using the box at the bottom left of the screen.
I'd give the film 4 stars! It was a good day out.

Givemecoffeeplease · 27/03/2017 21:11

~ What was your favourite moment in Smurfs: The Lost Village?

The glow in the dark bunny. I was hungover and thought I was tripping.

~ What did your DC think of the film? Did they find it funny? Exciting?

He's only 3 so he found it MINDBLOWING. First cinema trip, first popcorn, first Smurfs.

~ Having met all of the Smurfs, which one does your DC remind you of most?

He was scared of them, so perhaps he's Nervy Smurf. They were very kind to him but he wasn't convinced....

~ Would you recommend Smurfs: The Lost Village to your fellow Mumsnetters with younger DCs?

Absolutely. Great movie for the little ones with some humour and famous voices for the parents.

~ Who was your DC’s favourite Smurf and why?

The free one from his goodie bag! It sleeps in his bed. Thanks MN. X

Givemecoffeeplease · 27/03/2017 21:12

Here he is being Papa Smurf. Too cute. Soon abandoned the mask for popcorn tho. Foodie Smurf.

~ What was your favourite moment in Smurfs: The Lost Village?
DS loved the part when they were in the river & DD loved them discovering the girls village.
~ What did your DC think of the film? Did they find it funny? Exciting?
They really loved it and were transfixed for the whole film. They found it very exciting and fun.
~ Having met all of the Smurfs, which one does your DC remind you of most?
DD is very smurfette - girly, smart and determined. DS is a bit like clumsy, cute but not always looking where he's going!!
~ Would you recommend Smurfs: The Lost Village to your fellow Mumsnetters with younger DCs? Absolutely!!
~ Who was your DC’s favourite Smurf and why? They loved all of them and identified with most of them.
~ Please also add your star rating for the film, 5***

ArriettyCArriettyC · 28/03/2017 07:35

Thank you so much for the tickets - really well organised.

~ What was your favourite moment in Smurfs: The Lost Village?
I liked the introduction to The Smurfs - we are still laughing at table eating Smurf!

~ What did your DC think of the film? Did they find it funny? Exciting?
Yes, my 10 year old absolutely loved it.

~ Having met all of the Smurfs, which one does your DC remind you of most?
Definitely brainy Smurf!

~ Would you recommend Smurfs: The Lost Village to your fellow Mumsnetters with younger DCs?
Yes, probably 12 upper age though. I would imagine the part when Smurfette turns back into clay could be upsetting to young ones though

~ Who was your DC’s favourite Smurf and why?
'Table eating Smurf because he is so funny'

~ Please also add your star rating for the film, using the box at the bottom left of the screen.
done

Just to mention that I did find it all a bit sexist. Most of the male Smurfs are characterised by what they do, the new female ones that we meet are mostly named after flowers! Also, when they show Smurfette originally being made by Gargamel - she starts off as a female Smurf with short brown hair, then Papa Smurf does his magic and she ends up with flowing blonde hair and high heels! At least some of the new female Smurfs were more feisty though!

Faithless12 · 28/03/2017 07:35

NC4FB sadly it was happening. I saw two familes of four carrying out 5 bags. When they shouldn't have had more than two based on the bags being on every other seat.

mamabear35 · 28/03/2017 10:37

I wasn't thrilled about waking up so early on Mothers day and heading into London but actually we were all really glad we did it. Great family friendly venue and our girls loved the goodie bags with the model Smurf's inside. Unfortunately we didn't get a Smurf hat as there wasn't enough to go around but the girls didn't mind one bit. A really good experience for all involved in the end and I really enjoyed the film - a blast back to my own childhood.

  • What was your favourite moment in Smurfs: The Lost Village? My girls (5 and 7) loved it when the Lost Village was discovered and when the identity of the villagers was revealed!!

~ What did your DC think of the film? Did they find it funny? Exciting?
They were glued to the screen from beginning to end. There were some real laugh out loud moments and they were absolutely thrilled with the twist of the residents in the Lost Village. My youngest often gets frightened in movies with mild threat but this didn't bother her at all.
~ Having met all of the Smurfs, which one does your DC remind you of most? My youngest is Smurf Blossom (loves to chat, chat, chat!) and my eldest is Brainy...

~ Would you recommend Smurfs: The Lost Village to your fellow Mumsnetters with younger DCs? Yes! Absolutely - there were some really thrilling moments and enough physical comedy to keep the young ones entertained.

~ Who was your DC’s favourite Smurf and why? Smurfette!!! Because they love that she's the only girl in the village and 'can be anything she wants'. They thought she was a naughty for not listening to Papa Smurf however.
~ Please also add your star rating for the film, using the box at the bottom left of the screen. We all gave it 4 out of 5 stars!!

BarbInTheUpsideDown · 28/03/2017 10:53

Faithless I think part of the issue was that the bags weren't evenly distributed - up at the back where we were there were goody bags on all the seats (but hats on every other one). Maybe that meant that the lower seats didn't have as many as they should have done. Still not on to take extras, though, obv.

peukpokicuzo · 28/03/2017 11:21

I'd like to know more about the film from a feminist perspective before I decide whether to see it/allow dc to see it

  • does it imply that female smurfs can only be interested in traditionally feminine pursuits such as nurturing, home making, cooking and cleaning, and caring excessively about their physical appearance, clothes, shoes and hair?
  • does it imply that male smurfs can't be expected to cope with traditionally feminine pursuits without the guidance of a female smurf, or that any male smurf who does so will naturally also be more feminine than other male smurfs?
  • are female smurfs depicted as being just as capable as male smurfs at adventuring, problem solving and leadership as male smurfs without having to pretend to be male in order to get respect?
  • do female smurfs get depicted as having a fully rounded character and aspirations of their own which don't centre around their relationships with male smurfs?
  • would the film pass the Bechdel test?
mandes1 · 28/03/2017 12:00

What was your favourite moment in Smurfs: The Lost Village?
My favourite moments were the ones featuring Gargamel. I really enjoyed his sarcastic humour!

~ What did your DC think of the film? Did they find it funny? Exciting

My three boys loved the film. I caught them giggling at times especially at Gargamel and his cat!

~ Having met all of the Smurfs, which one does your DC remind you of most?
My eldest definitely reminded me of the nosey smurf!

~ Would you recommend Smurfs: The Lost Village to your fellow Mumsnetters with younger DCs?

I would recommend Smurfs to other Mumsnetters and children. I found the story quite poignant and was a little bit girl power! But also had elements of good always winning which is a good positive message for the little ones. It kept me and their dad interested throughout which doesn't always happen with children's films!

~ Who was your DC’s favourite Smurf and why?

My children all like Hercules because they thought he was strong. Also brainy.

Thank you to Mumsnet for a really lovely day and was made even more perfect as it was mothers day. Thank you also for accommodating my hubby who was suppose to be just our driver for the day but managed to get a seat!

~ What was your favourite moment in Smurfs: The Lost Village?
We all loved it when they were in the trippy forest with plants with eyes and strange details - somewhat Avatar-esque.

~ What did your DC think of the film? Did they find it funny? Exciting?

DS, 9, though it was touching, funny, amusing - missed any live action element and spent some time comparing it to the first film.
DD 12 found it too action packed - a real wizz bang thing and preferred the slower moments and the details and some of the jokes. Both thought it worth seeing and laughed at parts and got rather choked up at the end, before all is set right again. It led to a lot of discussions about contemporary ideas of women and girls in film. we also talked about the logic of all female and all male villages and how reproduction would work, and whether at the end that was a kind of Jesus like resurrection or more of a fertility ritual - it led to a lot of chat, actually! Including whether Papa and Willow got it together after that....

~ Having met all of the Smurfs, which one does your DC remind you of most?
Mmmh, hard. A combo of Clumsy and Brainy, for DD. DS is more like Papa.

~ Would you recommend Smurfs: The Lost Village to your fellow Mumsnetters with younger DCs?
Yes, mine loved it even though they are older and there was enough to keep older ones and adults amused. Younger DCs would just like the cute Smurfs, colours, music, movement etc, I imagine. Some of the ideology dripping off the plot might pass them by.

~ Who was your DC’s favourite Smurf and why?
I think they like Clumsy best - that is what they named the one they took away with them (thanks for that!) Maybe Jokey too.

~ Please also add your star rating for the film, using the box at the bottom left of the screen.
4 star.

Faithless12 · 28/03/2017 17:11

peukpokicuzo they had names like smurf daisy, smurf blossom etc so didn't have traditional names. Not including smurfette as I think she fits the traditional film female. They were individual characters a bit like the male smurfs, one of them had more traditionally masculine portrayal. However, it was very much like spice girls, girl power in a way. My STBXDH didn't like it because he doesn't agree with girl power 🙄

Moocherbot · 28/03/2017 21:45

~ What was your favourite moment in Smurfs: The Lost Village?

The forest with the funny eyes, it was quite early Disney-ish

~ What did your DC think of the film? Did they find it funny? Exciting?

DS (10) found it a bit predictable, we guessed who would live in the village and that there would be a Mama-Smurf figure. Think he's a bit old for it. DD (7) liked it a lot, had a great time. Didn't like it as much as Trolls tho.

~ Having met all of the Smurfs, which one does your DC remind you of most?

Definitely they are both Brainy :-)

~ Would you recommend Smurfs: The Lost Village to your fellow Mumsnetters with younger DCs?

Yes, for the younger age group. I thought the chase sequences might be a bit frightening for the very young though. Personally I thought it was rather by the numbers - and though I never thought I'd say this, it could have done with more big pop dance sequences like Trolls Blush
It's good that there are more female Smurfs now (and not in stereotype roles, it would have been ghastly if there'd been Nanny Smurf and Nurse Smurf and Fashion Smurf) but then it's a thorny one about their role assignment anyway isn't it...are they born Table Eating Smurf or do they chose it, or become it? I do like Paranoid Smurf. I think he dropped too much acid in the 60s and he's still seeing little blue people everywhere.

~ Who was your DC’s favourite Smurf and why?

They liked Hefty and Brainy, my DD is colouring in the Smurf toy to look like a Hefty and Brainy mashup. We're not sure if it's Brefty or Hainy but he's clearly an uberSmurf.

Great day out, lots of fun had - didn't get a hat or face paint but we have our toy and had a brilliant outing. Thank you!

Whyisitsodifficult · 28/03/2017 21:47

~ What was your favourite moment in Smurfs: The Lost Village?
The river scene.

~ What did your DC think of the film? Did they find it funny? Exciting?
My little one (3) found it a bit scary probably not helped by the fact it was incredibly loud! My older two (10&8) really enjoyed it.

~ Having met all of the Smurfs, which one does your DC remind you of most? Smurf Blossom, Smurf nosy(?) and Smurf clumsy.

~ Would you recommend Smurfs: The Lost Village to your fellow Mumsnetters with younger DC's.Yes it's a visual feast but for younger children, well adults as well it's much too loud!

~ Who was your DC’s favourite Smurf and why? Smurfette for my daughter just because she was the beautiful girl with the long hair (she's going through a bit of a Disney princess stage)!

We all had a great time and the cinema itself was lovely, so nice to sit down and get straight on with the film without the endless trailers! Thanks Mumsnet.

lovetheweekends · 28/03/2017 22:07

Faithless that's a good point a pp made: we were not at the front.
Maybe doing them at the end would be more time consuming. Although, handing them out to the queue would have worked?

peaches786 · 29/03/2017 10:58

Had a lovely time on Mothers Day with my mum, sister and 6 year old daughter, she loved the film and sat through the whole thing without wanting to leave!

~ What was your favourite moment in Smurfs: The Lost Village? My favourite moment was when Papa smurf met Smurf Willow and they kept calling him Papa thing.
~ What did your DC think of the film? Did they find it funny? Exciting? DC loved it, she had never watched the smurfs before and now she's hooked.
~ Having met all of the Smurfs, which one does your DC remind you of most? DC reminds me most of clumsy she is pretty much just like him.
~ Would you recommend Smurfs: The Lost Village to your fellow Mumsnetters with younger DCs? Of course it was a lot of fun for the whole family, just the right movie for little ones.
~ Who was your DC’s favourite Smurf and why? Too hard to choose a favourite but Smurf Lily comes pretty close they all have very different personalities

limomo82 · 29/03/2017 22:10

Our little boy is only just three, so we were preparing ourselves for having to constantly entertain him, bathroom trips, extra snacks and even the possibility of leaving early. The film held his attention and even ours. An enjoyable experience all round.

~ What was your favourite moment in Smurfs: The Lost Village?

Where clumsy could fly the dragonfly

~ What did your DC think of the film? Did they find it funny? Exciting?

He found it exciting but he didn't gargamel.

~ Having met all of the Smurfs, which one does your DC remind you of most?

Definitely Papa Smurf - he likes to think he calls the shots and is wise beyond his years!

~ Would you recommend Smurfs: The Lost Village to your fellow Mumsnetters with younger DCs?

Yes, a few moments were scary but nothing too bad.

~ Who was your DC’s favourite Smurf and why?

Clumsy - because he is funny

4/5 easily

What was your favourite moment in Smurfs: The Lost Village?

I liked that it was all animated. I preferred this to the previous Smurf movie. My favourite part was seeing the female Smurf village thriving. I liked when they taught Smurfette all their skills and got to know the new Smurfs.

What did your DC think of the film? Did they find it funny? Exciting?
We love movies and this one didn't disappoint. DS liked it when the flowers sucked up the Smurfs. DD liked it when Smurfette learnt how to shoot a bow and arrow.

Having met all of the Smurfs, which one does your DC remind you of most?
DS would be nosey! He loves to know what is going on. :)
DD would be brainy. She liked that a Smurf needed glasses and was into science.

Would you recommend Smurfs: The Lost Village to your fellow Mumsnetters with younger DCs?
I thought it was ideal. There are several perilous parts but they are handled in such a light hearted way that this film really would suit very young children and the story is strong enough to engage older children too.

Who was your DC’s favourite Smurf and why?
DS liked Papa Smurf
DD liked the female Smurf who shoots the bow and arrows (sorry I have forgotten her name!)

Please also add your star rating for the film, using the box at the bottom left of the screen.

I love this new feature! We really enjoyed it and gave it 4 stars. There is definitely scope to continue using these little blue guys and I hope another movie is made.

Finally I would love to say a huge Thank you to the lovely older Mumsnetter's child who kindly donated a Smurf hat to my DS. Mine both had the Smurfs in their goody bags and DS was hoping for a hat and therefore looking to swap. A very kind boy gave my DS his hat when he heard about this. Flowers You have raised a lovely child. Smile

I thought the event was very well organised and loved the venue. The popcorn and water were greatly received. I didn't see anyone taking more than their own bags.

Thank you Mumsnet for the tickets.

My daughter and I had so much fun going to see the Smurfs. My favourite bits were when Smurfette meets the other girls smurfs. Also, the sweet things that Papa Smurf says to Smurfette, I couldn't believe it, my eyes started to well up!

My daughter really enjoyed the film...in the end. There were some bits which she found scary (she is 4 years old) and asked if we could go home! but then she wanted to stay and really enjoy it. She thought it was funny and pleased they got rid of "that naughty man" Gargabel.

My daughter reminds me of Smurfette because, like her, she is her own special person, does things her way and is really thoughtful.

I would absolutely recommend Smurfs: The Lost Village to other with young children.

My daughter really like clumsy, she thought he was hilarious and she has named her toy Smurf Clumsy!

Thanks Mumsnet for a very special outing with my girl. She also enjoyed the blue face paint and surprising her dad by dressing up like a Smurf!
