Lord of the Rings etc

I know I am well behind the times.. but we have just completed the set (return of the Kings tonight).. and I think they have to be the best films EVER.How about that for sticking my neck out?
For sheer cinematography they are fantastic... but on the micro level, the friendship/loyalty etc.. I am just bowled over.

I love them too. Did you watch the extended versions - much more detail and truer to the books. Intended for the Tolkein fans with less attempt to please the so called 'general movie going public'.

For me The Lord of the Rings represents life's journey and struggle. Quite pessimistic in a way but the message seems to be one of kinship and team work. I'd be interested to hear how you interpret it unicorn, or how other Mumsnetters understand this classic trilogy.

Sorry to have come to this late, but I totally agree. I've watched the last video over & over and find it overwhelmingly emotional and uplifting. Fabulous. It's the loving friendship that really hits the spot, makes you remember why we're here. So refreshing to have a theme other than the usual romantic love. imo, there are other, more powerful loves, and this film highlights those.

I loved it too... and I thought I'd hate it!!!
