Have you ever walked out of the theatre or cinema? Why?

I was at the theatre last night. The play was 16+ and clearly stated it contained swearing and sexual references in its advertising and BOY did it. The people next to us walked out after the umpteenth wank joke and I was like Shock I've never seen that happen before. And surely if something states upfront what it's about you don't hoik your bosoms and get professionally offended and make for the exit?

Me and hubby walked out of a John Bishop arena show half way through, utterly shite and unfunny! Went to pub instead. Took my mum and dad to see cats years ago, my dad didn't come back after the interval cos he thought it was boring and shit! Walked out of cinema recently cos people next to us were having a running buffet! Did complain on way out to Manager!

annandale · 05/06/2016 16:03

Have walked out of a show written by a friend. It was appallingly bad and I was begging for it to end, and it was almost a relief when there was an offensive joke about religion and I left.

Have walked out of Identity because of the body with a pole down its mouth and District 9 because of the torture scene. Have almost given up on 18 films.

I like, but not love About Time the principle reason for not loving being the lack of Equal Opportunities Time Travel Grin

I bloody love that Nick Cave song at the wedding.

Walked out of Cars 2 because DS (ASD) was terrified.. i wanted to watch it though :(

I walked out of a Lacuna Coil gig a few years ago, it was shite, they decided to use it to showcase their 'unplugged' album, which i hate, on top of a 45 minute soundcheck which meant there was only an hour of actual decent music that cost us £40

I complained and got a refund.

Only once. Can't quite remember the film - something like deep water or dark water. Dh and I had a rare evening off (someone offered to babysit maybe?) and we decided to go to the cinema and didn't care what we saw. Was too dull to bear it though so went for dinner instead. Normally I am happy to give things a chance to improve but on this occasion I just felt the opportunity was too rare to waste.

caitlinohara · 05/06/2016 16:07

Yes. Once halfway through an awful kids thing (it was sort of 'experimental theatre' and it was shit) and told the dcs that it was the end. It wasn't, it was the interval. Grin

We left a pantomime early at Christmas because DD was scared - Liverpool Empire one which, as anyone who's been there knows, is brilliant, extravagant and funny. I was gutted because I was really enjoying it, plus we were right by the stage, but we couldn't stay.

I nearly left at the interval the first time I saw the Circus of Horrors but didn't and I'm really glad because the second half was fantastic. I've now seen them four or five times but probably won't be able to again because none of my friends like that sort of thing and I don't want to go alone Hmm.

EverySongbirdSays · 05/06/2016 16:08

What I mean is greyhound if you don't like dirty humour, you don't buy a ticket for something that says "contains dirty humour" and then walk out because dirty humour.

I personally felt like it tried too hard to the detriment of the play, but walking out is a bit like walking out of Billy Elliot for having too much dancing.

I walked out of Jennifer Lopez concert - was completely crap - grinding away on stage simulating sex (multiple times - with others, with groups, with self, on a sofa) and lipsyncing badly ... Although to be fair it would have been hard to sing live and in tune whilst grinding away simulating sex ....

ChipsandGuac · 05/06/2016 16:09

We left Billy Elliott at the interval. I loved the movie but thought the show was utterly crap and had Elton freakin John's ego all over it.

noisytoys · 05/06/2016 16:09

I walked out of The Crucible at the interval last week on Broadway. It was a 3/4 empty theatre and the cast kept flitting between an Irish and American accent so it was very hard to follow the play. Was very disappointing as we were looking forward to our show on Broadway for months. We should have seen something more mainstream.

EverySongbirdSays · 05/06/2016 16:11

Caitlin - evil/hilarious

greyhound - Usual Suspects is an amazing film, one of my all time.

I'm totally with you on Shallow Grave though

I walked out of Miss Saigon at the interval years ago and another musical that I've completely forgotten the name of.

I realised that I generally find most musicals pretty tedious, but luckily for the actors, we all have different tastes.

Wish I'd walked out of the Billy Connolly show a few years ago. It was dreadful and so far removed from his earlier better work.

emotionsecho · 05/06/2016 16:11

Every do you know they walked out because of the dirty humour or are you just assuming they did? Also, you've stated it was too try hard maybe they thought that too and were just bored instead of amused.

EverySongbirdSays · 05/06/2016 16:15

I'm assuming obviously. It was the timing of their walkout.

MinesAPintOfTea · 05/06/2016 16:16

I have a suspicion I know which touring musical you are talking about - we saw it a few weeks ago. I enjoyed it immensely (and in fact that was the second time I watched it), but the warnings did not do justice to how offensive it actually it.

lovelyupnorth · 05/06/2016 16:18

A friend walked out of Hong Kong. Well got the next flight home decided she didn't like it never left the airport

Only think I've walked out of was a 2nd world war thing at Durham Catherdal with Kevin Wheatley doing the narration. Seats were awful spent the first half looking at the side of the choir and unable to see anything else.

EverySongbirdSays · 05/06/2016 16:21

If you're thinking Avenue Q it wasn't Smile

I once went to a weird piece of experimental theatre and you could barely hear the actors over the banging of seats as people left. Really not my cup of tea but I had to stay and think of a constructive comment because I was there with the nephew of a cast member. It was just random screaming, snatches of monologue with no narrative thread and people chucking water over themselves.

kerbys · 05/06/2016 16:25

Years ago my bum went numb watching Santa Claus the Movie, I really, really wanted to walk out but the kids wouldn't let me.

Littleballerina · 05/06/2016 16:26

A kids film because of about 20 teenagers being loud and obnoxious and the staff being too scared to ask them to be quiet. We couldn't hear a word of the film.

rumblingDMexploitingbstds · 05/06/2016 16:27

I quietly left a play version of Brideshead Revisited about two thirds of the way through the first act. The poor cast looked in need of a lot of espresso and a lie down, it got too painful to sit there and watch them struggle any more.

EverySongbirdSays · 05/06/2016 16:28

But Santa Claus : The Move is A CLASSIC.

I always wanted one of those Candy Cane things that made you fly.

Vanilla Sky. One of the most atrocious films ever. I'm no prude but Cameron Diaz has a really icky line. I'm surprised she was able to say it with a straight face.
