A soemwhat intense offering. I found it so refreshing to be able to lose myself totally in a movie for a change and suspend my disbelief as a story unfolded with out gimmicks.

Nice eye candy too

Anyone seen it?

No, who is in it? what's it about?

I really don't like the cinema these days!

sunnywong · 27/12/2006 13:56

Brad Pitt
Cate Blanchett
Gabriel Gael Garcia

it's very "real" not very jolly in the end though

Going to see it tonight. Really looking forward to it!

dingdongjustforyoufg · 20/01/2007 15:57

Went to see it last night, really enjoyed it, though 'enjoy' is probably not the right word...it is ceretainly an intense experience

noddyholder · 20/01/2007 16:08

I just asked dp to go tonight as ds is at a party sleepover and he said no he doesn't feel like the cinema pita

Ready · 20/01/2007 16:10

How can he not want to go the cinema?? Boooo. You can come with us if you like

Pinotmum · 21/01/2007 13:04

I saw this film last night and it was fantastic. Not many laughs but a wonderful film with fantastic acting and Brad Pitt! I am so glad I talked DH out of Rocky

Ready · 21/01/2007 13:07

Went to see it last night... have to say it didn't blow me away like I thought it was going to. It was very well shot, and the acting was top notch. But it just left me a bit empty. I didn't really see the point in the Japanese story... I mean, I know there was the link (don't want to give anything away) It just felt a little out of place.

That said, it was certainly engrossing and very watchable. Felt so much sympathy for Amelia

americantrish · 22/01/2007 15:15

for all the 'hype' surrounding this movie, i found it not only painful to watch (not due to subject matter) but overall disappointing.

Ready · 22/01/2007 15:19

sorry to pick fault sunnywong but isn't it Gael García Bernal??

mummytosteven · 30/01/2007 22:54

It wasn't bad, but I think it was trying too hard to be profound. I thought the Japanese strand was plain weird.

multitasker · 01/02/2007 12:42

I don't think it was as good as the hype, but having said that Cate Blanchett can do no wrong IMO - how annoying that she still looks fab with no make-up. I thought the story involving the Mexican nanny most convincing. Apparently the lovely Brad had to have prosthetic eye-bags!!

yellowrose · 05/02/2007 09:02

I saw it a few days ago. not that impressed although his previous film was excellent. can't remember the name it was a sort of "crash" where various characters end up with their fates changed by a car crash (2 brothers who dog fight and an actress, etc have a car accident) - somewhere in latin america, in spanish, does anyone know this one ?

i couldn't see the point of the deaf mute japanese girl (yes, ok it was also to do with communication problems), although it was the story i enjoyed the most. there was enough material i think to have made a film JUST based on her.

i thought the morocco-usa thing was drivel. yes it was about lack of communication and racism, but i felt so little sympathy for the characters (a bit biased i admit as i can't stand brad pitt in any film) that it didn't move me.

there is a lot to be said about the role of the usa and its so called fight on terror which has led to so much paranoia (the fat brit. tourist in the film saying they may get their throats cut in the moroccan village???), but i just didn't think it was handled well in the film.

i was very moved by the japanese girl. i thought she was excellent.

beansprout · 05/02/2007 09:06

I thought this thread title said "Babe".

I haven't seen Babel though

"That'll do pig".

yellowrose · 05/02/2007 09:07

beansprout - i admit to loving babe alot more - he is so much cuter than brad pitt !

yellowrose · 05/02/2007 09:10

For anyone interested, his previous films, both utterly gripping and excellent, were "Amores Perros" and "21 Grams".

beansprout · 05/02/2007 09:18

There was a pig in "21 grams"?!

Ok, ok, I'll go now.....

lazyline · 05/02/2007 09:23

I was disappointed with the film. Some of it, I thought was excellent. The Japanese sections, particularly the young actress. I always enjoy Gael, but the rest was uninspiring. I thought that Brad and Cate were just Brad and Cate.

The intent was lost somewhere along the way, one event having repurcussions across the world is a great storytelling idea but was executed badly. The characters had no real connection and I found it hard to care about most of them.

There are plenty of films where nothing happens and the point is to tell a story about the characters, just some poeople, going somewhere in their lives. This fell somewhere in the middle ground, trying to tell a story and failing, but not telling us anything about most of the charcters. I didn't feel like I got anything from it, and it ran SO slowly.

If it wins the Oscar, I shall be sorely disappointed.

yellowrose · 05/02/2007 15:45

beansprout - oink...oink...oink...you have a pig obsession
