Moments in films that make you CRINGE

I watched Cocktail last night for....reasons mostly involving Bryan Brown please don't judge me

The scene where Tom Cruise makes an entire bar of people listen to him wang on about cocktails in poem form forced me to hide behind a cushion as I was cringing so much. PARTICULARLY when he said the word "snazzy" in what I assume is meant to be a posh English accent Hmm at which point I had to leave the room.

Hit me with your other cringe moments in film!

Can we have scenes in tv programmes too? Because I would put forward any British special guest in an American sitcom. Helen Baxendale in Friends, all of Daphne's family in Frasier, Dougray Scott in Desperate Housewives, Monica's 'soulmate' in Friends. It's like all they have to be is super British and plummy/Northern, no further depth of character or sense of humour is allowed.

Likewise Emma Watson in This is The End. Cringey cringe.

LindsayG44 · 25/11/2015 15:18

The bit in The Holiday where Kate Winslet gives that slimy bloke at work a book for his Xmas present and he calls her "a stinker"

Rollermum · 25/11/2015 15:28

The Terminal made me cringe throughout - Tom Hanks with a funny accent, absurd relationship with Catherine Zeta Jones, jaunty upbeat slapstick BS. Bad enough, but especially because it is based on someone's actual life! Poor guy had to live stateless in an airport for years - an interesting story that they shat all over with this atrocious film.

The Boat that Rocked was a total cringe fest. I've blocked most of it out but the women were offensive bland and just there for having sex with.

Yy to Mamma Mia - wtf?
And Dirty Dancing - why so popular?

Rollermum · 25/11/2015 15:36

Ha just realised The Boat That Rocked is also a Curtis film.

MaryMagdelene · 25/11/2015 16:00

OMG I totally agree about the Julia Roberts blow job scene! But you know what pissed me off? He didn't let her finish watching it despite her saying she'd never seen it before. Very mean of him I thought especially as she had to wait all evening while he finished his work. It put me right off him Angry

StillYummy · 25/11/2015 16:03

When the little mermaid brushed her hair with the fork, made me feel uncomfortable for years!

Shirkingfromhome · 25/11/2015 16:13

YY to SATC2 - the whole film from start to finish is awful. I've never sat in a cinema where the whole audience collectively cringed.

When Julia Roberts is saying bye to her room-mate in pretty woman - dreadful. And again with the terrible cross-eyed gurning face she pulls when kissing Richard Gere on the steps in the final scene.

I used to love dirty dancing but I watched it a few years ago and it made me cringe so much I've never watched it since (think it was the "she's like wind scene").

MrsJayy · 25/11/2015 16:22

Somebody pointed out the seediness of the boat that rocked it didnt click to me how seedy a film it was Blush. Most of Briget jones made me cringe her angst pissed me off.Kiera in love actually and him with the cards meh what a shallow superficial pair they are and the videos he made screams STALKER not romantic

MrsJayy · 25/11/2015 16:27

Btw i love love Actually just those 2 pee me off.

Dumbledoresgirl · 25/11/2015 16:28

A different moment from Pretty Woman, though I agree with a few of the moments already mentioned.

The one that gets me is when Richard Gere says 'we are going to be spending an obscene amount of money [that bit is brilliant, always makes me Grin] so we need some major sucking up', and then the saleman starts saying cringy things to him. I can't remember what, but his cringy comments really embarrass me. Which they are meant to, I suppose, but even so....

Agree with half the world that any Richard Curtis film is cringy from start to finish.

And to the PP who ages ago asked if anyone had seen Far and Away - yes, I have and yes, Tom Cruise is excrutiatingly awful in it.

Also want to add Clive Owen in King Arthur. I can't watch that film, his performance is so embarrassing.

AskingForAPal · 25/11/2015 17:20

Oh my god has no-one mentioned the scene in The Perks of Being a Wallflower where Emma Watson does a Kate Winslet in the back of the car and the little squib main character says "I feel infinite."

Only equalled by the bit where they get fucking massively overcome with excitement that their school prom is "playing good music!!!!" and the good music turns out to be... . I was honestly near sick laughing in the cinema at that.

Whoever said les Mis - one of my old colleagues who was a very solemn character was actually thrown out of the cinema for laughing at that.

AskingForAPal · 25/11/2015 17:21

Sorry - Come on Eileen that should be: (from around 30 secs in)

MadeMan · 25/11/2015 17:50

"Helen Baxendale in Friends, all of Daphne's family in Frasier, "

Yes to these.

English guests in The Simpsons are crap as well. There was an episode where they came to England and met Tony Blair and The Queen and probably some other people and it was absolutely terrible; I had to turn it off. Americans probably thought it was the best episode ever because for some reason they love all that "drinking tea whilst listening to the Beatles on a Routemaster bus with The Queen" type of stuff.

hackmum · 25/11/2015 18:02

When I posted about Sliding Doors earlier, I didn't realise that elsiewoo had already posted the exact same scene. Weird, because no-one else has mentioned Sliding Doors.

I found all of Ralph Fiennes's performance in Schindler's List cringeworthy, because he did that awful German accent. Why is he speaking in a German accent when the movie's in English? It makes no sense. No-one else seemed bothered by this, strangely.

CoffeeAndOranges · 25/11/2015 18:15

The entirety of the film 'Failure to.Launch' with Matthew McConaghey and Sarah Jessica Parker. (it was on the Now box, only watched it cos he was in it, I was having a post-True Detective MM moment). He looked positively embarrassed yo be in it, there was absolutely no chemistry between him and SJP and even Bradley Cooper in an early supporting role couldn't make it good. The whole cast seemed awkward, embarrassed and glad when the credits rolled and they could pocket their cheques...

ARichVernacular · 25/11/2015 18:22

hackmum I think I had repressed all memories of Sliding Doors until this thread Grin

MadeMan · 25/11/2015 18:25

I've not seen the film, but this poster makes me cringe.

Moments in films that make you CRINGE
MadeMan · 25/11/2015 18:28

Hand signs to simulate sex, I should have added.

MrsJayy · 25/11/2015 18:30

Eyes wide shut had me turning inside out with the cringe the bit where nicole kidman is standing in a vest that was ridiculously see through was just awful ,

SagaNorensLeatherTrousers · 25/11/2015 18:31

The Pretty Woman blowjob scene infuriates me so much. I mean, they're supposed to be showing them falling for each other, and he can see how much she's enjoying watching the TV...but NO. She must do her prostitutely duties RIGHT NOW. What a nice guy. Hmm

MrsJayy · 25/11/2015 18:32

I loved didnt mind sliding doors

maybeanotherdaysoon · 25/11/2015 20:25

I've just thought of a moment from Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets that makes me cringe. It's the part where Harry and Ron drink the Polyjuice Potion and turn into Malfoy's best friends, Crabbe and Goyle, so that they can fool Malfoy into discussing information with them.

Undercover as Malfoy's friend, Harry is listening to Malfoy slag everyone off. Malfoy says something like "Dumbledore's the worst thing that's ever happened to this place" and then Harry (as Malfoy's friend) shouts "YOU'RE WRONG!!"

As if you would ever do that if you were pretending to be someone else and didn't want to be found out! Harry comes across as completely stupid in that scene. It makes me cringe because it's so out of place and also, he can't ever come across as anything but righteous goody-goody Harry!

MrsJayy · 25/11/2015 20:29

Ricky gervais in The Simpsons was fecking cringier than a cringey thing i switched it over

Lweji · 25/11/2015 20:40

About Pretty Woman, iirc, it was supposed to be a dark film, not the "romantic" mutant it ended up being. It would have made more sense.

SiegeofEnnis · 25/11/2015 20:53

I believe so, Lweji - clearly someone in a script meeting had the dubious brainwave of hooker-turns-princess via a lot of shopping, instruction in table manners and a spot of opera.

The other scene that always makes me want to throw things at the screen is when JR sneaks down to the bar/restaurant in her towelling bathrobe, surprises Richard Gere playing the piano -- whereupon he asks all the unfortunate minimum waged staff who are mopping tables, sweeping, setting up for the next day, to please clear the room so he can shag the prostitute he's just picked up on the grand piano. Presumably with the entire kitchen and cleaning staff peering round the door. The guy has a penthouse a two-second lift-ride away!

Of course, the plot is one of the many that wouldn't happen with modern technology - Richard Gere's snazzy car's sat nav would take him right to the hotel, without needing to hang about asking random hookers for directions Grin
