Moments in films that make you CRINGE

I watched Cocktail last night for....reasons mostly involving Bryan Brown please don't judge me

The scene where Tom Cruise makes an entire bar of people listen to him wang on about cocktails in poem form forced me to hide behind a cushion as I was cringing so much. PARTICULARLY when he said the word "snazzy" in what I assume is meant to be a posh English accent Hmm at which point I had to leave the room.

Hit me with your other cringe moments in film!

Good point re Top Gun. Never could stand McGillis or any of her lines, and that scene of Tom Cruise & his sidekick crooning in the bar is cringeworthy as well.

One of the all-time cringeworthy scenes is at the end of Audrey's Rain, a made-for-TV flick (US) from several years ago. Perhaps it was shown in the UK too or be on Amazon. Not bad for a TV movie - middle-aged woman is sort of bitter at having life pass her by while she cares for a disabled sister and then her orphaned niece and nephew. An old college boyfriend comes back into her life and they fall in love but she gets scared and pushes him back out of her life.

Fine, typical plot, and at the end he reappears in the front garden of her home. Should have ended there but instead the final scene is of her AND the kids, the disabled sis AND the main character's best friend all stampeding across the lawn to hug and shriek and surround him. Makes my toes curl - that he is portrayed as some sort of savior for the whole clan instead of her getting a private reunion with her lover, and the whole air of relief that now Audrey won't be drooping around like a sad sack because Mr. Wonderful chose to return. Hard to describe but it ruins an otherwise quirky little TV film.

That 'Next' film with Nicolas Cage and Jessica Biel.

There's a scene where Jessica Biel's pupils tell her NC fancies her and the camera pans to NC with his pathetic withering expression. I'm sure NC had a bad mullet too which makes the scene even more ridiculous.

MoriartyIsMyAngel · 24/11/2015 19:56

Oh, I agree. It's just not a pleasant viewing experience with very unworldly parents IMO!

elsiewoo · 24/11/2015 19:56

Sliding Doors when John Hannah is reciting Monty Python, with Gwynnie laughing along. Also when they're in the rowing (?) club singing. Actually, a fair bit of that film is hard to watch...

CremeBrulee · 24/11/2015 19:57

Has no one mentioned the truly awful cringe fest that is Armageddon?

In this bucket of tripe, Liv Tyler wins the golden cheese for the 'I'm marrying you!' line when sending an emotionless Ben Affleck off to die (hopefully) on an asteroid.

wizzywig · 24/11/2015 19:58

That Hugh Grant film where the boy sings "strumming my pain with his finger". Also michael douglas dancing in Fatal Attraction. And Pierce Brosnan dancing in Thomas Crown Affair. Ugghh. Gives me the heeby jeebies

PseudoBadger · 24/11/2015 20:02

"Has no one mentioned the truly awful cringe fest that is Armageddon?"

And that bit with the animal crackers!

SagaNorensLeatherTrousers · 24/11/2015 20:03

How can anyone not have mentioned The Notebook?!

"I wrote you 365 letters. I wrote you every day for a year. It wasn't over… it still isn't over."

MadHattersWineParty · 24/11/2015 20:03

Does anyone else cringe at that scene in 27 Dresses where Katherine Heigel and the bloke are doing drunk 'acting' and are climbing on all the furniture belting out Benny and the Jets?

And all the locals, instead of thinking 'you drunken city-dwelling twats, I've only come in for a quiet bloody beer' clap and cheer them along like they're famous.

I cringed at that.

And yy to Eat Pray Love. When they go to Naples and decide they do not mind having bigger bums and thinking they have got a bit fatter because LOOK WE HAVE JUST DOSCOVERED PIZZA FOR THE FIRST TIME IN OUR LIVES

hackmum · 24/11/2015 20:05

Slidiing Doors, where the John Hannah character demonstrates how witty he is by reciting bits of old Monty Python sketches - which, as we all know, is a sure sign of being the sort of boring sad tosser you must avoid at all costs.

SagaNorensLeatherTrousers · 24/11/2015 20:06

Actually, any Nicholas Sparks film.

mamaduckbone · 24/11/2015 20:09

I love Harry Potter but the bit in deathly hollows part 1 where Harry and Hermione dance together in the tent is horrendous.

Ataraxy · 24/11/2015 20:10

Marty's rendition of Johnny B Goode in Back to the future makes my fingers twitch for the fast forward button.

Mass American cheering / fist pumping / back-slapping is cringe worthy too. Does that actually happen in the US?

Thepinkcricket · 24/11/2015 20:11

Any of the Pierce Brosnan Bond films. I love Pierce Brosnan but those films got cringier and cheesier. Thank goodness for Daniel Craig.

Hellohellohowareyou · 24/11/2015 20:12

Oh just thinking about Harry and Hermoine dancing is making me cringe now

BrennieGirl · 24/11/2015 20:12

Oh I like Pierce dancing in the Thomas Crown Affair, but his singing in Mama Mia is toe curling.

Masterpiece1 · 24/11/2015 20:21

A lot of Harry Potter is terribly acted and cringey.

Outcomesthebunnyofdeath · 24/11/2015 20:25

Yes Livs I agree about that scene in Dirty Dancing. For me it can be pinpointed to the moment when he grinds against several women as he comes over, and in particular the half-hearted grind he does just before the beckoning. I have to look away.

Love the rest of the cheesefest it though.

Even the word grind makes me shudder.

ASmallHenInItsLateForties · 24/11/2015 20:35

Does anyone else cringe at that scene in 27 Dresses where Katherine Heigel and the bloke are doing drunk 'acting' and are climbing on all the furniture belting out Benny and the Jets?

YES! A thousand times yes. I can't watch it.

I find nearly all children in films annoying too. Anyone sporting a cute pudding bowl haircut and chipping in constantly never fails to be annoying.

mammuzzamia · 24/11/2015 20:39

"ROOOBIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIN" at the top of her voice.

This, this! Maid Marion in Robin Hood, Prince of Thieves. I cringed every time

mammuzzamia · 24/11/2015 20:40

Maid Marian even!

PoorFannyRobin · 24/11/2015 20:42

Not too sure about the regularity of fist pumping and backslapping, but we in the US do kind of jump around, cheer, clap and some even whistle if the situation calls for it. Not quite as much as in prior years perhaps, but enthusiasm and a congratulatory spirit still lives on a bit.

LittleMiss77 · 24/11/2015 20:44

The dancing scene in Harry Potter & the Deathly Hallows pt 1.

What were they thinking?!

ElasticPants · 24/11/2015 20:59

No, the Harry and Hermione dance was perfect. They are both geeks and can't do anything remotely cool like dancing. except kill evil wizards It was meant to be goofy and shit.

DuchessofHC · 24/11/2015 21:05

The bit in Titanic when Kate Winslet is explaining how Leo ended up on top of her with his shoes off.

"I was trying to see the err.. the err..."

Followed by windmill hand gestures until they get it and then there's all the "the boy's a hero then! Well done!' stuff.

Most of the script in that film is a bit cringe to be fair but I think that might be the worst bit!
