I think tonight calls for a really good creepy horror film. Dp hasn't watched many bar saw, but it does need to be realistic-y (ie no zombies/ zombeavers) can be old or new. Ideally on sky rental thing, which most tend to be.

I was thinking maybe the grudge/ring. Preferably nothing too old-fashioned, we tried the birds, Carrie and wicker man but were none too taken.

Please Grin

The Shining gets my vote too! One of the few films that made me hide behind a pillow and peek around the edge in that awful 'can't bear to look, can't bear not to look' state of anxiety!

Try while you're waiting. Only 35 minutes long.

This is the scariest horror I've ever seen. So scary that someone ran out of the the screening at the end. That's scary. .

Unfortunately I can't find a version with English subtitles. But it's fairly easy to follow.

Don't bother with the American remake with Kiefer Sutherland and Sandra Bullock.

I like Fallen with Denzel Washington and the first Saw.

The Woman in Black, 1989 version is scary. The Daniel Radcliffe one isn't.

The original Omen film, with Lee Remick, Gregory Peck, and Billie Whitelaw is scary. I saw it around 1989/1990 aged 7. And had to get into bed with one of my older sisters. My parents were not impressed that they let me watch it whilst they were dining out. The actor who played Damien looked like an evil fecker. Grin

Poltergeist. The first one.

Exorcist 3, that scene with the nurse in the corridor, never again.

That film with Barbara Hershey based on a true story, where the woman was attacked by an invisible ghost. Saw it last year and it scared me to death.

Halloween. Although the ending was far-fetched.

Amityville, James Brolin one.

Children of the Corn.

There are loads more, not so well known good horror films that I have seen, but I cannot remember the names of them.

Oh, Stephen King's IT.

Shuttle.
Scoffed a bit at first as the usual bog standard chase and slaughter film but it totally bent my head as you could believe it happening. I still think about it wondering if it actually happens.

Broken
Got me in quite a high state of anxiety quite early in which stayed for a bit after it finished.

Again I could believe it could happen.
It's rare I find films that really hit the spot.

FluffyPersian · 04/07/2015 21:39

Actually... How about the Enfield Haunting?

I watched that recently on TV and it's the first thing that's pretty much terrified me for ages.

First 2 episodes out of 3 are REALLY creepy Grin

dustarr73 · 04/07/2015 21:42

Actually i thought The Conjuring really creepy, lots of doors opening and slow cameras.Really good. Also the woman in black 1 and 2.

chockbic · 04/07/2015 21:43

Salem's Lot.

Hope you don't like sleeping Shock

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 04/07/2015 21:48

Oh yes Wolf Creek - just no let up is there? I don't think I breathed throughout the whole film. Dh did, but the only thing he said was ' fucking hell' intermittently Grin

apintofwhine · 04/07/2015 21:55

It follows is a massive pile of over hyped meh imho. Waiting for more recommendations

dustarr73 · 04/07/2015 21:58

The Exorcism of Emily Rose is really good.Actually one of my favourites of all time.

Lagoonablue · 04/07/2015 22:01

Rosemary's Baby. An old film but still creepy and kind of stylish.

Exorcist. Hell I couldn't sleep without the light on for a week.

The Shining. Looks great and is sooo creepy.

Ludoole · 04/07/2015 22:06

I love the twist at the end of Orphan Smile

GoEasyPudding · 04/07/2015 22:08

I've got a good one for you film fans that you may have missed.

Its called "Borderlands" its quite recent, it's British and its in the found footage style.

I'm quite fussy about my horror films but this one I really enjoyed and found to be proper full on scary.

As with any film, don't watch the trailer if you don't want too much spoilt.

apintofwhine · 04/07/2015 22:14

The descent is really creepy
Oh yes orphan, had forgotten that one

TripTrapTripTrapOverTheBridge · 04/07/2015 22:24

FluffyPersian The Babadook was a manifestation/representation of the mothers grief and issues (that caused her to be a total bitch and make her son a pain in the butt). Once she battled it she kept it in the cellar and fed it worms, visiting it briefly. I think that was meant to represent her allowing herself to remember her pain, nurture her memories and keep it from taking over her at the same time.

Iliveinalighthousewith2friendl · 04/07/2015 22:30

Pet Semetary.
Cujo.
Orphan.
I found this film on Netflix called Boo about a haunted abandoned hospital, quite creepy. I mean abandoned places are creepy enough with ghosts and ghouls poking their noses in. Just imagine a hectic eventful active hospital, someday being abandoned.

GoEasyPudding · 04/07/2015 22:41

It's not a horror film but I find the film "Zodiac" to be very frightening. It's got a good star cast as well. Robert Downey Jnr, Mark Ruffalo and Jake Gyllenhaal.

I also really enjoy "What Lies Beneath" It's not a horror either but I just love a good old supernatural thriller and its got Harrison Ford and Michelle Peiffer in it. Its like the good old days of movie making.

I also like "The Uninvited" from 2009. This is a psychological horror film that I think was and is rather under rated and forgotten.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 04/07/2015 22:48

Just remembered I was so scared after seeing The Blair Witch, I had to sleep with the lights on for a week as Dh was working nights. When he saw it he said ' wtf was that about, why on EARTH were you scared?'Confused

limitedperiodonly · 04/07/2015 23:02

They Live is good .

Iliveinalighthousewith2friendl · 04/07/2015 23:03

I'm currently watching a film called. Finders keepers about a creepy doll.
Will report back later if it's scary or notGrin

echt · 04/07/2015 23:04

The Descent
The Orphanage
Let the Right One In (Swedish)

The Cabin in the Woods

Not quite horror, but very good indeed: Sightseers.

Like Wolf Creek, Snowtown is Austrlaian and based on real events, but far more closely. It's the most horrifying film I've ever seen, bar none.

thatsn0tmyname · 04/07/2015 23:05

Ethan Hawke in Sinister

bostonbaby · 04/07/2015 23:23

Hostel!
Not a fan of zombie or too much unnecessary gore tbh. It's the ones which could be real that get me and hostel is awful
