Name the most obscure, not well known film you've seen?

Basketball Diaries. I've never met a single person who has seen it and it's one of my favourites. Leonardo Dicaprio and Mark Wahlberg.

Like Crazy, pre Jennifer Lawrence being famous. Low budget and the cast had to make up 50% of the script.

Daydream nation. Stumbled across the trailer randomly on YouTube, decided to watch it. Really odd but turned out quite good.

OP posts:

Haha Bad boy bubby was so wrong. I have the DVD somewhere cause I don't remember which weirdo friend lent it to me.
I remember watching the Kevin bacon film a pp mentioned 'she's having a baby' at a sleepover.

For years as a teen there would be this movie called Island City that was played in the middle of the night. I think it was originally a failed TV pilot- very bad sci fi, futuristic thing. People had coloured gems on their chest to say who they could be with. I loved that piece of crap lol think it had will from will and grace in it

MrsToddsShortcut · 21/06/2015 20:09

Thank you for reminding me of The Battle of the Villa Fiorita!

Also Society - some genuinely brilliant social commentary wrapped up in a really funny horror movie.

I once sat through Last Year at Marienbad.

Also a brilliant feministy style werewolf movie called Gingersnaps.

Living in Oblivion anyone? Absolutely lampooned the art house cinema scene.

JulyKit · 21/06/2015 20:10

Ohwhatthefuck - A Chinese Ghost Story I love!

Another favourite Chinese film - not really 'obscure', but totally brilliant: Raise the Red Lantern.

And Japanese faves: Tempopo and (extra weird and wonderful:) The Dolls.

evelynj · 21/06/2015 20:11

Bad boy bubby is amazing.

If you liked before sunset series you should watch the recent boyhood, it's fabulous, (a bit like the also brilliant Tokyo story where kinda nothing really happens dramatically but everything the film wants to say in said in the unsaid iykwim?)

Also irreversible. You will never forget this film, it made me feel physically sick & there's the most uncomfortab scene ever in it.

Also, I loved Dersu Uzalu, though haven't seen it in 20 odd years & defo want to watch soon.

I love this thread :)

Rosanna's Grave, with Jean Reno in it.

Probably not that obscure (I checked its existence on wiki first) but so many people seemed not to have heard of it, never mind seen it.

StockingFullOfCoal · 21/06/2015 20:15

Basketball Diaries
Predestination

CatOfTheGreenGlades · 21/06/2015 20:17

The two films I've come on to mention have not appeared yet! that's how obscure they are...

Wetherby. Terrifying and yet strangely boring film in which Lord Percy out of Blackadder (but not in the same role) shoots himself in the head at Vanessa Redgrave's dinner party. (or some combination of those) It made a big impression on me as I was 16 or something but no one has ever heard of it.

Also, Primer. Unbelievably arse-achingly boring and confusing low-budget sci-fi about some nerds who invent time travel by climbing into a box, which DP insisted on giving a whirl. Then they keep getting out of the box at the wrong time and meeting their own selves from slightly different moments. Arrrrggggh. It's one of those films where suddenly you realise 2 hours have gone by and you're still waiting for something good to happen. Compounded by the sense that you'd think it was amazing if you were only brainy enough to follow it.

Lightas · 21/06/2015 20:17

I loved 'Tim' with Mel Gibson, I have watched it a couple of times or maybe more

WixingMords · 21/06/2015 20:18

It's not exactly obscure but I've seen 32A which isn't exactly widespread in it's viewing

Nice film too.

monkeywrench · 21/06/2015 20:23

Drowning by Numbers by Peter Greenaway, bloody brilliant......

Writtenbyme · 21/06/2015 20:24

OP, when I saw the title of the thread I immediately thought of Like Crazy.

I watched it on a long haul flight thinking it would send me off to sleep. It had the opposite effect and was strangely gripping.

Clueing4looks · 21/06/2015 20:25

Suspiria, about a witches school. Watched when I was a teen and never met anyone who's seen it.

Also, there was a kids movie about a giant invisible rabbit called mr knibbles, who you could only see if you solemnly swear that you really and truly love rabbits. The girls parents never believed her but he inevitably appeared to all at the end of the film.

SagaNorensLeatherTrousers · 21/06/2015 20:26

Is Like Crazy on Netflix? I think I've seen it there. Might give it a go.

AbandonShark · 21/06/2015 20:26

Guns and Talks, a Korean action film. Unexpectedly funny and a bit off the wall.

CordeliaFrost · 21/06/2015 20:27

A film called Higher Learning, which was written, produced and directed by John Singleton.

I don't know if it is really obscure or not, but certainly IRL, I've rarely come across anyone who has also seen it.

nancy75 · 21/06/2015 20:29

I also saw My Own Private Idaho in the cinema, being young and daft I went to a cinema in Soho and only realised midway through the film that it was the kind of cinema where wearing a grubby mac and playing with yourself was the norm rather than the exception. It was an interesting afternoon at the cinema.

Have endured irreversible - if you haven't seen it then don't - its horrible

My offering for a not well known film is Doberman - French, late 90's ultra violent

OttiliaVonBCup · 21/06/2015 20:30

evelynj Dersu Uzala, that was great. Haven't seen it in years as well.

That reminded me of The White Sun Of the Desert. I'd love to see that again.

OhTinky · 21/06/2015 20:31

War of the Buttons. A rather bland Irish comedy drama. Watched it on a school trip but it remains virtually unknown to anyone outside that "lucky" class of 20 or so 11 year olds!

eddielizzard · 21/06/2015 20:31

of horses and men. icelandic.

science of sleep was lovely too - french.

AbandonShark · 21/06/2015 20:31

Oh, and Fish Story, quite weird but entertaining, about an unknown punk song from the 70s that saves the world from a comet in 2012.. It made absolutely no sense though.

parques · 21/06/2015 20:33

The Boy Who Turned Yellow
Boxing Helena

AbandonShark · 21/06/2015 20:33

(Fish Story is Japanese, forgot that bit!)

SmartAlecMetalGit · 21/06/2015 20:34

Picnic at Hanging Rock is great, I've got it on blu-ray.

I'm glad someone else has said Ink. I happened upon it on LoveFilm/Netflix a few years ago and it's a weird but rather lovely little film.

Cronos, Guillermo del Toro's first feature film. Pan's Labyrinth and Devil's Backbone are reasonably well known but nobody ever seems to have seen Cronos. It's a shame as it's very good.

The Keep, a 1983 adaptation of the F. Paul Wilson book written and directed by Michael Mann. It's got a pretty well known cast (Ian McKellan, Gabriel Byrne, Scott Glenn, Jürgen Prochnow) but the version that got released was very heavily cut (apparently Mann's original cut was around 3.5 hours long, the theatrical release just 96 minutes....) and it's pretty much incomprehensible if you've not read the book. It's wonderful though, not least because it's immensely stylish and has a fabulous soundtrack by Tangerine Dream. It's never been released on either DVD or blu-ray and has a cult following campaigning for a release of the director's cut.

Triangle, a British/Australian horror/psychological thriller. Brilliant little film.

getbusyliving · 21/06/2015 20:34

The little girl who lived down the lane- a creepy early Jodie Foster film

Zame · 21/06/2015 20:35

Has anyone who loves Bernard and the Genie watched it recently? I want to buy it but I'm scared I won't love it as much anymore, I also not want it spoilt iykwim
