Name the most obscure, not well known film you've seen?

Basketball Diaries. I've never met a single person who has seen it and it's one of my favourites. Leonardo Dicaprio and Mark Wahlberg.

Like Crazy, pre Jennifer Lawrence being famous. Low budget and the cast had to make up 50% of the script.

Daydream nation. Stumbled across the trailer randomly on YouTube, decided to watch it. Really odd but turned out quite good.

I vaguely remember The Boy With The Green Hair being on television. It was either drinking milk or water that caused it. It was eventually cut or all fell out.

That one gave DH nightmares for years Grin

Cube - brilliant film, quite gory, but I love it. Had it on VHS a few years ago. I believe they made a sequel too.

The Science of Sleep - directed by Michel Gondry (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, loads of Bjork videos). It's wonderful because he's done a lot of theatre work, so instead of special effects, he uses theatre tricks.

The Thirteenth Floor - It's hard to explain especially as I haven't seen it in so long. But I highly recommend it

Mindexplode · 22/06/2015 11:31

ok, have read through the list and have seen the following

Dogtooth (yes it was a greek film and not swedish)
I bought a vampire motorcycle
Bubba Ho Tep
Benny and Joon
The orpanage (still gives me nightmares)
warm bodies
gingersnaps (1 anmd 2)
Cube (1 and 2)
Hedwig and the angry inch (excellent sound track)

New ones:
Across the universe
Vampire strippers
Breakfast on pluto
Shock treatment (sequel to rocky horror picture show)

LurkingHusband I thought of Hal Hartley but decided he's not really that obscure. I do love his films though, and have seen all three you listed. I've also seen Night on Earth and The Icicle Thief.

and 300+ posters agreed Grin.

How's this for obscure, despite having some "names" in it ...

Retroactive

Connie and Carla

Brilliant film by Nia Vardolos who also wrote and starred in My Big, Fat, Greek wedding. Strange that Wedding was so popular and nobody seems to have heard of Connie and Carla which is equally as good. Also stars Toni Colette from Little Miss Sunshine, Muriel's Wedding...

Borka · 22/06/2015 13:32

Yep LurkingHusband, that's pretty obscure! In return, I give you The Nine Lives of Tomas Katz.

DramaQueenofHighCs · 22/06/2015 14:50

evelynj - the 'Sin Eater' on eBay is the Heath Ledger one. The one I watched was an 11 minute long 'film short' (so I suppose some may not count it as a film!)
All I can find is this trailer on YouTube

chickensaresafehere · 22/06/2015 15:14

Cube,
The young poisoners handbook,
Switchblade Romance,
Most Chan-wook Park films,
Most early Mads Mikkelsen films(Pusher,Open Hearts,After the Wedding,The Hunt)
There will be lots more, will keep thinking!

Clawdy · 22/06/2015 16:26

Early Anthony Newley films! Mum was a mad fan and dragged me and my sis to :
Jazzboat
Idle on Parade
Let's Get Married!

MyIronLung · 22/06/2015 16:55

Life Is Beautiful.
This one isn't particularly obscure but no one I've ever spoken to about it has seen it!
It's an Italian film (with subs) about a Jewish father who gets sent to a concentration camp during WWII where he manages to hide his young son from the Nazi guards, while the rest of the children are being taken away and killed in the gas chambers. The whole time they're there the father makes his son believe that they're at a holiday camp (even though it's unbelievably awful) and in order to win the prize of a tank he has to 'earn points' by staying hidden from the guards.
It won multiple acadamy awards, how has no one I know seen this amazing film?!

Toofat2BtheFly · 22/06/2015 17:07

Lean on me with a very young Morgan freeman .... I loved that film watch it over and over as a teen with my db but no one else had ever heard of it .

Very early on , whilst dating my now DH , I quoted a line to my db and my now DH piped up in the background with the next line .... I knew I was going to marry him there and then !Grin

Winnie - a made for TV film about a girl that wrote a book whilst in a mental institute - mid 80's -I was around 8, I sobbed my heart out at the injustice of her situation and that film has stayed with me ever since !

FatherReboolaConundrum · 22/06/2015 17:14

The Seventh Bullet: a 1970s Western (Eastern?) from Uzbekistan about the end of the civil war period in the very early 1920s. Actually there were a couple of more obscure Ukbek films from the 1960s, but they're so obscure that I've forgotten what they were called.

OttiliaVonBCup · 22/06/2015 17:27

If you like that Father look up The White Sun of the Desert.

reredos1 · 22/06/2015 17:35

The Second Civil War

It has James Coburn, Ron Perlman, Beau Bridges, James Earl Jones, Denis Leary, etc etc etc etc

I saw it at 4am on Sky years ago. You can't get it in the UK, but it ought to be compulsory viewing. It is the story of how the tension between established WASP society in the USA and immigration sparks a second civil war. It is awesome, funny, incredibly well acted and I wish I could get a copy.

I think it counts as obscure. It is also awesome.

ohmymimi · 22/06/2015 17:36

'Little Otik'
'Daisies'
'Eraserhead'
'Sebastiane'
'Satyricon'
'The Beast'
I haven't read through the thread yet, so will be interested to see if these have appeared.

FatherReboolaConundrum · 22/06/2015 17:37

Oooh thanks Ottilia, didn't know about that one and have just found it on Youtube.

ohmymimi · 22/06/2015 17:44

I'd love to see that, reredos1, am cursing my dvd player isn't multi-region.

reredos1 · 22/06/2015 17:45

ohmymimi it is a superbly acted, awesome, thought provoking film but I suspect a bit left wing for Hollywood.

ohmymimi · 22/06/2015 18:28

I've just bought it on Amazon.com and had it sent to my cousin in NJ, reredos, she's going to watch it and then keep it for my next visit!

BikeRunSki · 22/06/2015 18:44

That Sinking Feeling
First ever film made by Bill Forsyth before he hit the big time with Gregory's Girl.

Leaningtoweroflisa · 22/06/2015 18:53

I saw a film during a film festival with friends ie I didn't dream it... I shall attempt to describe it:

Foreign language film in early to mid 00s. Eastern European I think due to oomhpa brass band music / band. About someone who does speeches at funerals. Very very bleak after a comedic (we thought) start. Ends with one main character being buried in his ?VW bug and his deaf girlfriend pops out of the back seat, cuddles up to him and prepares to die.

I am buggered if I can find a title on Google...

Leaningtoweroflisa · 22/06/2015 19:01

Oh wait - it's called 'grave hopping' or odgrobadogroba and its Slovenian.

I've spoiled it for you all too! Grin

yazz21 · 22/06/2015 19:23

Not trying to interrupt the flow of conversation. However, did anyone say they has seen Tidelands?
