Basketball Diaries. I've never met a single person who has seen it and it's one of my favourites. Leonardo Dicaprio and Mark Wahlberg.

Like Crazy, pre Jennifer Lawrence being famous. Low budget and the cast had to make up 50% of the script.

Daydream nation. Stumbled across the trailer randomly on YouTube, decided to watch it. Really odd but turned out quite good.

More recent films - Separado! by Gruff Rhys of the Super Furry Animals.

(I only went to see it because I figured there weren't going to be many English/Welsh/Spanish language movies, but it's actually a pretty cool if somewhat weird film.)

noideawhattoget · 21/06/2015 22:52

i have seen Triangle and Pans labyrinth. triangle was proper weird. pans labyrinth was amazing but very violent and sad.

i will add in- The Power of One, with Morgan Freeman and a very young Stephen Dorff. very moving film. and also, Desert Flower, based on the books on FGM by Waris Dirie.

getbusyliving · 21/06/2015 22:56

Hasn't everyone seen Pans Labyrinth? Wouldn't consider that obscure at allGrin

AlecTrevelyan006 · 21/06/2015 22:56

La cabina ("The Telephone Box") - 1972 Spanish 'horror' movie. I saw this once when I was a kid and it shit the life out of me.

Short film in which a bloke walks past a phone box and it rings -he steps inside to answer the call and becomes trapped. All happens in a big public square. V scary. I found it on youtube a couple of years ago and watched it again - still made me v unnerved by the ending.

CrapBag · 21/06/2015 23:03

I've seen the Basketball Diaries. Thought it was odd the twins from Sweet Valley High turning up in it. Grin

Most obscure film I have seen was with my housemate at uni. It was called M, black and white and possibly in German about a man who abducted children. Weird weird film. Housemate loved it.

EffieTrinket · 21/06/2015 23:03

I've watched quite a few of the movies mentioned here.

To the poster who asked about Bernard and the Genie? We bought it last year as a Christmas movie and although it is cheesy in places I think that adds to its charm tbhSmile

My obscure one to add to the list is Murder in the First with Kevin Bacon. No one has ever heard of it. It is probably the most depressing film I have ever seen and I have never ever wanted to watch it again.

ExcuseMyEyebrows · 21/06/2015 23:12

The boy with green hair. Particularly odd as I watched it on a black and white television.

getbusyliving · 21/06/2015 23:17

Just another girl on the I R T

DramaQueenofHighCs · 21/06/2015 23:19

expat I LOVE The Red Violin!! Grin

Larrytheleprechaun · 21/06/2015 23:21

Sorority boys. Something akin to American Pie or the like. At the time I almost died laughing but would be interesting to see if I would find it funny now when I am older and wiser and more miserable.

missmakesstuff · 21/06/2015 23:29

Underground, it's a Czech film I think, about this town that live underground to avoid the civil war and then stay there because the mayor I think persuades them it's still going. Watched it many times in Poland when hanging drunk in the late 90's, never found it since. Brilliant and very funny/tragic.

Eraserhead...lady in the radiator? Went through a David lynch phase!

marthamydear · 21/06/2015 23:30

Valarie and Her Week of Wonders.

hiddenhome · 21/06/2015 23:33

Anyone seen Ptyang Yang Kipperbang? An Aussie film about a young lad falling in love.

JulyKit · 21/06/2015 23:35

hiddenhome - I remember P'tang Yang Kipperbang!

  • mid-80s, gorgeous film! Grin
RomanMum · 21/06/2015 23:36

See. Some of these. Went through a Peter Sellers period a few years ago. A lovely little film The Optimists of Nine Elms (serious role). Can I find it on DVD? Nah

Pipbin · 21/06/2015 23:48

Cant DH bloody loves Plan 9.
The film Ed Wood was made about it.

CatMilkMan · 21/06/2015 23:49

1 blind cat and a half broken stuffed elephant.
No one has ever seen it, I made a home film when I was 13 I made it 30 seconds in to trying to edit it and gave up.

evelynj · 21/06/2015 23:57

dramaqueen There's some 'the sin eater' DVDs on eBay for 99p.

Office space is a good comedy that we watched as a lucky dip from the video shop.

FretYeNotAllIsShiny · 21/06/2015 23:57

Oh, I've seen a fair few of these!

Harold And Maude,
Candy
The station agent (several times in fact)

LadybirdSpots · 22/06/2015 00:02

yazz yes I've seen Tidelands!

As soon as I read the thread name i thought of it, but couldn't remember the name so thank you! It was one of my favourite films as a teen.

Completely weird and a bit messed up, but I loved it!

NoPowerInTheVerseCanStopMe · 22/06/2015 00:07

Morris: A Life With Bells On. A wonderful comedy about morris dancing. I love it!

Also Alatriste, a Spanish film starring Viggo Mortensen based on a series of books about a Spanish soldier during the 80 years war. Essentially the Spanish Sharpe! Wonderful film for a c17th history nut like me!

MrsToddsShortcut · 22/06/2015 00:08

Ptang Yang Kipperbang was the first film ever shown on Channel 4 (if memory serves) back in 1982! I wasn't allowed to watch it as my mum thought it was going to be rude.

YY to La Cabina! Fantastic film. Always used to be shown at 2 in the morning.

Mention of Streets of Fire reminded me of another forgotten 80's Classic, the Rocktastic 'Hearts of Fire', starring Rupert Everett as the heartless Gary Numan-a-like pop star, fighting with grizzled old timer Bob Dylan for the heart of some random would-be starlet, I explicably billed only as 'Fiona'. It really was the height of utter utter 80's tosh, (and presumably the nadir of Dylan's career) but it holds a special place in my heart...

Ptang Yang Kipper Bang - fantastic film!

Halsall · 22/06/2015 00:19

Nooyear, oh God yes, Dumplings! Saw that at my local art house cinema (why?) which does a nice line in obscure and/or arty foreign films. Although 'nice' isn't really the word for that film, 'twas a strange one.

I wouldn't know where to start listing the offbeat films I've seen, since I once worked somewhere which involved watching loads of them. Quite a lot mentioned so far are very famous in arty circles, though, eg 'Last year at Marienbad'. And 'M' is a classic of German cinema.
