I need a list of "must see" movies

ThinkIveBeenHacked · 15/06/2015 10:14

DH away with work next week so once the babies are asleep at 6.30pm I fancy settling down with a movie each night with my dinner. As DH not here I can indulge without having to find something we would both like.

Films ive watched recently and enjoyed are
Shutter Island
Inception
Life of Pi
Bridesmaids (why did I wait so long!)
Hunger Games (the three that are out anyways)

Dont mind most genres except horror.

Also dont mind age of the movies - dont have to be current.

What would you suggest I must see?

Dead Poet's Society
Melancholia (I'd recommend the other films in Lars Von Trier's depression trilogy, but they contain quite a lot of graphic sex so be warned. They're called Antichrist (I cried big huge sobs at the start of that film, it is so unbelievably sad) and Nymphomaniac)
Donnie Darko
Usual Suspects
Pulp Fiction
Reservoir Dogs
Sin City
Shawshank Redemption
Dallas Buyer's Club
Good Will Hunting
50/50
Identity
Event Horizon (it is scary, but it's brilliant)

Do you have Netflix? If so, there are some fantastic series out at the moment.

MrsKravitzFromAcrossTheStreet · 16/06/2015 13:55

I have a terrible memory for these kinds of things but a few great films I've seen recently -

What We Do In The Shadows is the funniest film I've ever seen and is just ace in all sorts of ways, the story, the artwork, the actors, it's brilliant
The Grand Budapest Hotel
Gone Girl
Gravity
They Came Together
My Neighbour Totoro, Spirited Away, Kiki's Delivery Service are all excellent for kids and adults alike

I saw Dallas Buyer's Club at the weekend and didn't like it. Felt I had wasted my time watching a depressing film about a character I couldn't care less about. But maybe I just have a problem with MM as I didn't much like Interstellar either.

You must add Alien to that 80s list OP!

MrsMarigold · 16/06/2015 14:58

The Killing Fields
The Godfather
Senna
The Damned United (I don't even like football)
La Gloire de Mon Pere
I Capture the Castle
The Fabulous Baker Boys

MrsMarigold · 16/06/2015 14:59

oh and Patha Pan Charlie

mumofoneab · 16/06/2015 15:57

For light relief and Benedict Cumberbatch at his best innocent and funny, try Starter for 10

couldthisbeit · 16/06/2015 16:37

Terms of Endearment
Pay It Forwards
The Blind Side
Top Gun
Could watch any of these at any time but will cry at least once during each

NameChange30 · 16/06/2015 16:53

Amélie (my all time favourite film)
Dangerous Liaisons (with Glen Close)
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
The Girl With a Dragon Tattoo (the trilogy)
La Haine
Life is Beautiful
Paris je t'aime
The Pianist
Sense and Sensibility

Anything by Tarantino - my favourite is Inglorious Basterds but you might want to watch them in chronological order.

And the good films with Matthew McConnaughey in them (ie not the rom coms!)

NameChange30 · 16/06/2015 16:57

+1 for:
About Time
Dallas Buyers Club
The Help
Romeo and Juliet

ThinkIveBeenHacked · 16/06/2015 17:11

The Help and Pitch Perfect - tick!
