Has anyone been to see it?

We've just got back. I cried.. It was so nostalgic.

Overall I loved it for the sheer blockbuster-ness but two elements have been playing on my mind since SPOILER ALERT (1) since when was the T-Rex the good guy? and (2) Claire completely abandoned her role as head of ops (or whatever) for the whole park in order to save her two nephews...once they were sorted, shouldn't she have resumed her role and taken more responsibility for the safety of everyone else? Didn't she feel guilty for all the loss of life? (Yes I quite realise I'm massively overthinking this...)

ArcheryAnnie · 15/06/2015 13:34

Belgian - that's what I loved about it!

SPOILERS BELOW

...that the Big Bads in the first film (raptors and T-rex) were ambiguously, hmm, not good exactly, but on the side of good. It's weird to come out of a Jurassic film thinking "awwww!" about a raptor, but the film made me do it.

(And yes agree re Claire. Also annoyed that her sister would be all "YOU DARE TO GO TO WORK!!! WAIT UNTIL YOU HAVE KIDS - YOU WILL UNDERSTAAAAAND THEN!!!!" I hate that casting of women with responsible jobs as cold career woman who just havn't connected with their wombs yet.)

With the OP's permission, we are going to shimmy this thread over to our new Films topic.

I really really enjoyed it, but felt that the death of Morganna of Merlin fame, was a bit... gratuitous and played for laughs, and the lead female character could have been a bit more well rounded and less - ball breaker woman needs to soften up a bit - cliche.

But yes, overall, a good time was had by all. Although clearly it needed more Jeff Goldblum.

SmartAlecMetalGit · 15/06/2015 15:12

Saw it last night and absolutely hated it.

SPOILERS

The characters were all completely one dimensional and predictable (especially Claire and her very-carefully-ripped-to-show-a-bit-of-thigh skirt), the dialogue was stilted and the whole thing was poorly directed.

I spent most of the film just feeling sorry for the dinosaurs. Lots of little nods were made to things being less than ideal for them but it was never really taken anywhere. Masrani wants to know if the dinosaurs are happy (never answered) and Owen delivers a very brief lecture about them being animals and not "assets" but that's it. It felt a bit like watching "When Good Animals Go Bad" just with dinosaurs......

I didn't like the creative ways they came up with for some of the raptors to die. Rocket launcher? Setting one on fire? What the actual fuck? I'm watching this for the dinosaurs, I don't want to see them blown up or on fire.

I thought the effects were not quite up to standard. Yes, there are some really iffy bits in the original Jurassic Park film but overall I think they did a better job back in 1993 than they did in the new one.

And the T-Rex sounded wrong Angry

The only bits I actually enjoyed were the little nods to the first film (I'd be lying if I said I didn't get a little teary when they first used that music Blush) but I came away wishing they'd just re-released that one instead of making another.

Geoff0409 · 15/06/2015 15:34

I thought it was ok. Nothing special. I am surprised thought that it got a 12A and not a 15 rating (money making?) as I did think that a couple of scenes were quite frightening, and I watched it in 2D. If I had been watching in 3D it would have been pretty scary. Oh and the product placement Hmm was tacky I think.

fattymcfatfat · 15/06/2015 15:39

I watched it in 3D with 6 yo DS on Saturday. we absolutely loved it. me because it reminded me of the first one and I have always loved raptors, DS because he loves dinosaurs. he wants a pet raptor but knows they aren't real so he knows he can't. he said he will just have to have a dog instead! Grin

BLUE; OUR TRUE HERO

I agree that Claire the uncool childless businesswoman and Owen the badass Alpha male stuff was really ugh. It's 2015 not 1960.

The ending obviously hints at a sequel. I definitely would watch it if they improved the script next time.

chrome100 · 15/06/2015 16:18

I enjoyed it but agree re Claire and stilettos. In fact, I felt she was portrayed as a bit ridiculous, meaning there were precisely no strong female characters in it (and I rarely notice things like that).

Some horrible cheeseball moments about being brothers forever and so on which made me vom in my mouth. But action scenes were terrific.

GlomOfNit · 15/06/2015 16:35

SPOILERS

I'm with you, SmartAlec. Sad I was about 19 when the first one came out, so less nostalgic, but the first film really was good. They got progressively worse but this was the pits.

Nothing really new done with the dinosaurs, a lot of plot holes and inconsistencies (how did they get Mossasaur DNA if they obtained it via mosquitos in amber, given Mossasaurs were sea-dwelling reptiles and unlikely to get sucked by a mozzie?), the humans were 2D and boooring, the kids were a) really unappealing, b) bizarrely RetroBoy (the younger one, that was. 70's hair, clothes, v v retro bedroom with the sorts of cute vintage toys, even the dinosaur models, that are chosen for nurseries by parents who think they look cute). There was zero attraction/chemistry between the protagonists, and not a sniff of a real palaeontologist. Sad No decent female characters. No truly funny dialogue. No Jeff Goldblum. Sad If they'd developed the 'this is what jerks human beings are - they take a cool science thing like cloning dinosaurs and turn it into Disneyworld' angle a little more, I'd have respected it a whole lot more.

However, my dinosaur-obsessed 7 yo lapped it up, cried a tiny bit when the poor raptors got fried, and generally loved it all.

MissBattleaxe · 15/06/2015 17:12

Well I loved it but some bits were sad and I wouldn't take my 5 year old. My older son and I watched it in 3d and loved it. it was pure escapism. I did object to Clare having to do everything in heels, but to be honest I just enjoyed sitting back and being thoroughly entertained.

There were some valid points made about modern society i.e now the dinosaur park is open the kids are bored already and want bigger, better dinos. Also the views of the theme park were very stereotypical and were spot on- the main street, the big arena, the queues for rides...

MrsFring · 15/06/2015 17:34

Saw it in 3D with my 14 yr old Dd. Really enjoyed it, liked the camp-ness and Indianna Jones/ Hans Solo vibe. I agree that more thought-provoking avenues could have been explored but it was never going to be that kind of film. We watched the original film yesterday and thought that the original T-Rex was scarier, mainly because of the disturbing bellowing noise that he made.

Agree about Pratt and the persistence of his clothing- bloody shame.

butterfly133 · 15/06/2015 18:58

Given that I'm only really interested in the dinosaurs and not the storyline, will I enjoy it? Same goes for rest of family to be honest. (don't get me wrong, I love storylines, I just didn't think much of the personal storylines described here). I actually got bored with the previous ones as I wanted more action and less faffing with emotional stuff.

Earthbound · 15/06/2015 22:06

The dinosaurs are fantastic butterfly. Yes it has plot holes big enough for a T Rex to stomp through but I thought its great entertainment if you suspend your disbelief.

nagsandovalballs · 15/06/2015 22:11

Lead human female is rubbish. However, all the dinosaurs are female, so arguably some v strong women. Better case for the Bechel test?

Carmex · 16/06/2015 08:35

It is pretty incorrect... weren't raptors actually the size of a chicken?

OP posts:
Mimigolightly · 16/06/2015 10:07

We saw it at the weekend and loved it - wanted to see it again straight away. Hated so much product placement and the fact that Chris Pratt stayed fully clothed.

There is no bad language in it and I think it would be fine for a 9 year old - there were definitely children younger than that at our showing.

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 16/06/2015 10:46

Yeah Carmex. They are atleast half the size of the average human. But I think they engineered the raptors to be bigger.

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 16/06/2015 10:47

They also had feathers.

Ridingthegravytrain · 16/06/2015 11:17

It was enjoyable. But lacked Sam neills eyebrow and goldblums pithy one liners

FujimotosElixir · 16/06/2015 11:19

the dying brontosaurus harking back to the sick triceratops a bit, when it looked liked it was about to cry ...camera pans back to bryce dallas crying i thought dear god there milking this reference.

FujimotosElixir · 16/06/2015 11:21

totally agree with regards to sam niel/goldblum and feeling their absence

Shera82 · 16/06/2015 12:14

Can't believe I cried at a Brachiosaurus dying - hormones much lol plus baby kicked like mad at all the loud bits which is pretty much the whole film but watching Chris Pratt made up for that :)

BriarRainbowshimmer · 16/06/2015 13:32

Did anyone else feel sorry for the raptors when they died?
They went from frightening enemies to something more heroic...

MrsKravitzFromAcrossTheStreet · 16/06/2015 13:33

I saw it yesterday and LOVED it. It reminded me so much of Disney parks right down to the product placement commercialism. I can't bring myself to say anything negative about it as I am still bathed in its warm dinosaury glow and humming the theme tune.

Oh, and I really feel bad for all of you who obviously didn't stick around until after the credits to see the bit where Chris Pratt's clothes all fell off Grin
