Actors who are guaranteed to add class to a film

I was just posting in the Avengers thread and a thought occurred which I decided might make a good topic on its own.

I had been going to say that the presence of Samuel L Jackson always adds class to a movie, sometimes sorely needed Star Wars . Some film critic or other made this comment years ago about Sam Neill, which I agree with. Others that spring to mind are Judi Dench, Morgan Freeman and the much lamented Pete Postlethwaite. If they're in it there will be at least one little area of, shall we say, gravitas; some credibility; some dignity.

I'm not sure it's even about star quality. Possibly not. They don't have to carry a movie; in a minor supporting role they still manage to add a little stamp of authenticity to even the biggest steaming pile of shite.

This is not a crumpet thread. Attractiveness or lack thereof is irrelevant (no objections to it being mentioned in passing though). "I always watch so-and-so because he's so dreeeeamy" is far too well catered for elsewhere. We are talking about Class with a capital C.

Anyone want to play?

Agree with Paul Giamatti ,he would be my choice to play a Columbo remake ( althou bad idea ).
But i can not believe no one has mentioned Anton Lesser ,not done lots of starrey roles but he's the go to chap for any irascible roles.
He was in TV's the Hour,Endeavour,Wolf Hall etc.
David Suchet can do no wrong.

Kristen Scott Thomas - I think she walks on water

Morgan Freeman - ditto

Maggie Smith - ditto

Sarah Lancashire - ditto

Meryl Streep

Tom Hanks

Denzel Washington

Anne Reid

Lesley Sharp

Imelda Staunton

Robert Downey Jr - very underrated actor, had he not had his setbacks with addiction etc he would be absolute acting royalty by now.

Leonardo Di Caprio - another top notch actor who gets better with age

I really rate Martin Freeman and Benedict Cumberbatch as well.

Tim Spall

Damien Lewis

Julianne Moore

Kevin Spacey

LadyGlen · 28/05/2015 12:13

But i can not believe no one has mentioned Anton Lesser
I did.

I love Anton Lesser - he's always terrific - even if the actual production is complete dross.

BobandKate0 · 28/05/2015 12:22

Sorry,must of missed it.Blush
Anton's like Cyril Cusack, does so much with poor scripts.

PuppyMonkey · 28/05/2015 12:30

Grin At Samuel L Jackson adding class.

Snakes on a Plane was classy - seriously? Confused

He's well known in the industry for appearing in any old shite I believe.

Streep, Dench, Caine, Freeman, Mirren - they're the classy bunch these days.

Piratejones · 28/05/2015 12:32

Good call on Christopher Lee.

LadyGlen · 28/05/2015 12:39

Oh, yes Cyril Cusack was good. Eric Porter was another who could lift a dire film.
I was always rather fond of Ian Bannen. He was heartbreaking in the original Tinker, Tailor. Sadly, many of my favourites are dead now.

angelos02 · 28/05/2015 12:42

So...
We've had Bob Hoskins, Julia Roberts, Phil Collins and Dustin Hoffman.... Why isn't Hook the best film ever made then?

Meerka · 28/05/2015 13:38

Agree with most of these, especially Julianne Moore, David Strathairn and Stanley Tucci.

Also Toby Jones, Marion Cotillard, Mark Strong.

Sure there's more. I may be back.

SoleSource · 28/05/2015 14:09

Julie Walters. Love her!

SoleSource · 28/05/2015 14:13

I am now craving the movie 'The Lonely Passion of Judith Hearne' with Maggie Smith and Bob Hoskins. Handmade films.

TheWomanTheyCallJayne · 28/05/2015 14:17

For the new breed I have to add Eddie Redmayne. That boy can act

BettyCatKitten · 28/05/2015 14:29

Kathy Burke, brilliant actress. Her and Gary Oldman in Nil by mouth excellent British film.
Julie Walters, Maggie Smith, Judi Dench, Helena Bonham Carter. We have some cracking British actresses.

ItsRainingInBaltimore · 28/05/2015 14:33

OMG yes how could i forget the blessed Emma? Shock What an oversight.

ItsRainingInBaltimore · 28/05/2015 14:34

We watched Little Miss Sunshine again for about the fifth time the other night. Toni Collette is indeed amazing and that whole film is a total joy.

FrChewieLouie · 28/05/2015 14:34

Lots of my favourites here:

Christoph Waltz
Anton Lesser
Carey Mulligan
Emily Watson
Alan Rickman

Just recently I've noticed the dad from Friday Night Dinner in a few things, vastly different roles but he shines in all of them. One to watch for the future, I hope. I really like Faye Marsay as well, think she has a bright career ahead of her.

GrouchyKiwi · 28/05/2015 14:35

Has anyone said Colin Firth yet? He is such a good actor.
