I have decided to institute a once weekly video night

cos I love tv and don't reckon my kids watch nearly enough

Am going to set me up with a LoveFilms or whatever account later today.

Right then, what films shall I bung on my list?

Criteria: films that wil appeal to ds who is 3 (don't get hung on on ds bit-big Angelina fan) and also his parents)

Please don't only reccomend Disney.

And say if there are any scary bits.

We all love the Studio Ghibli films, directed by Miyazaki. It is Japanese animation that is amazing. Not really the same as Manga. Some of the films are more appropriate than others for younger children. My dd's are 5&4, and quite sensitive to scary bits. Two that I would recommend for this age child are 'Kiki's Delivery Service' and 'My neighbour Totoro'. Fantastic.
They also really like old Disney - the ones with just Micky or Donald duck, and also the Loony Tunes cartoons get a bit of showing. Oh yes, they both love Dangermouse!

Greensleeves · 11/11/2006 11:04

I haven't seen Kiki's Delivery Service (would love to though!) but I have seen Spirited Away (same director) and I loved it, it is genius - but I would say it is far, far too strong for a child. It is pure horror in places, I wouldn't even let an eight year old see it, never mind a child. It might be worth watching some of these beforehand to make sure they are actually suitable for your child.

FillyjonkTheFireEater · 11/11/2006 11:17

like the miyazaki stuff actually

I think he is pretty good at hinting at sinister stuff without actually showing it.

Haven't seen Kiki's delivery service BUT I found spirited away pretty scary, plus the theme of being lost...now ds would not like that. At least done the way he does...

(I find Dr Who and Torchwood much too scary though)

right off to study with 5 children and it on in the background to check for scaryness.

Kiki's.. and My Neighbour... are quite different from Spirited Away and Howl's Moving Castle. Much gentler, more magical. My dd, who was so scared with the Wizard of Oz that daddy had to take the video out of the house (in case the witch escaped from the box) was fine with Kiki's. I always try to preview films before the LO's see them (and then I get to watch them twice!

Saturn74 · 11/11/2006 12:00

Kiki's Delivery Service is beautiful.

FillyjonkTheFireEater · 11/11/2006 12:20

you are all fab!

Previewing is no hardship, since I love kids films except Disney. Never got on with Disney for some reason. I find them a bit creepy, tbh.

am currently watching 5 children and it and am getting a little freaked...WHY is the baby, who looks worryingly like my dd, being left with his older siblings? What if anything happens?

Where's your suspension of disbelief, Filly?

Apparently Chitty Chitty Bang Bang can only fly if you top her up with four star!

FillyjonkTheFireEater · 11/11/2006 12:34

you mean....ccbb doesn't run on unleaded?

oh god , look at those mullets!

beckybrastraps · 11/11/2006 16:58

Ds loves 'Bedknobs and Broomsticks'

No idea if it's Disney.

FrannyandZooey · 11/11/2006 16:58

Have only read Greeny's first post DO NOT WATCH Chitty Chitty Bang Bang it scares the bejeezus out of most children. There is a scary man with a net called The ChildCatcher. Need I say more?

Will be back with more recommendations soon but had to stop the press to warn you about that.

Greensleeves · 11/11/2006 17:00

Yes, the bloody preschool showed it without telling parents first, otherwise I would have had him out of there quicker than Concorde - but he says it was fine and didn't scare him.

beckybrastraps · 11/11/2006 17:01

God no - NOT chitty CHitty bang bang. Ds is 5 and still won't watch it.

There is a live action Peter Pan from a few years ago that he loves as well - but there are some scary bits in that too.

And Willy Wonka and the chocolate factory (Gene WIlder one).

FillyjonkTheFireEater · 11/11/2006 17:02

gene wilder scares me though

I think he was in some sherlock holmes adventure which was so bad, it was no longer funny

Greensleeves · 11/11/2006 17:03

You're making me feel really bad about the Chitty Chitty Bang Bang now I won't even let ds1 watch Snow White because it's too scary. I might have to speak to the teacher about not showing films without checking with parents first.

FrannyandZooey · 11/11/2006 17:03

Babe is nice, although scary abbatoir bit at beginning.

I like Bedknobs and Broomsticks, although the book is better. Sword in the Stone quite a good Disney one, erm, slightly scary cartoon monsters in one scene.

The Bear (Raymond Briggs) is fab. Have you watched all of Bagpuss and the Clangers yet? Do they count?

Oh and Lion King really really very good, IMO, sorry for yet another Disney

beckybrastraps · 11/11/2006 17:04

All the best children's stories are just that little bit frightening though aren't they? Otherwise they're just - sugary pap.

FrannyandZooey · 11/11/2006 17:05

Greeny I would be hacked off if someone was showing my child films without checking, and I would be pretty damn hacked off if it was Chitty Chitty. Ds would be in bits about the child catcher, I would never hear the end of it

Your ds is obviously fine so don't fret

FrannyandZooey · 11/11/2006 17:08

Oh oh The Parent Trap, either version, is a good film. Maybe for older ones really - deals with separated twins trying to reunite their estranged parents. From one of my favourite books "Lottie and Lisa".

Sorry I forgot you said 3 year old. I am not sure if any of the ones I have said are suitable for a 3 year old in fact. I would stick with Clangers for now, really.

beckybrastraps · 11/11/2006 17:09

Ivor the engine.

Nowt scary there!

FillyjonkTheFireEater · 11/11/2006 17:10
