I am ordering some dvds that I enjoyed when younger and I am using my children as an excuse to watch them again .

So far I have got

Ghostbusters
Stand by me
The Goonies

I know there are many more but I can't think.

Boys are 9 and 11 if that helps .

Thank you

The Dark Crystal yes ! How could I forget that one ?

I am really surprised that so many of these are 15 , I remember them as being pretty innocent .

That may say more about me than it should !

Also Tremors is not the light hearted slightly scary romp you may remember. 5 mins in it got turned off A LOT of swearing and v inappropriate chat. It was a 12 had not realised, bad mum. He was gutted. I enjoyed it after he went to bed.

lemonyone · 30/04/2015 14:58

Howlong - we used to watch Carry on films, the Airplane films, Naked Gun and Blazing Saddles at that age. All of which are highly inappropriate and probably 15s and 18s now!

Possibly explains why I have a mouth like a sewer.

Howlongtillbedtime · 30/04/2015 15:02

Maybe I will stick to more cheese like The Mighty Ducks !

I might get some of the others just for me and dh to watch for now , I am on a nostalgia kick .

Stand By Me has a lot of swearing and Teen Wolf is pretty risqué too - thought ds would love it but I had to switch it off after the scene of a couple writhing on the floor in their underwear, handcuffed and covered in whipped cream! Shock Grin

millionsofpeaches · 30/04/2015 15:13

Young Sherlock Holmes? Not too risque I think, although there is whipped cream in the form of terrifying cakes which come alive and try to kill Watson scared the living crap out of me and probably still would!

SevTSnape · 30/04/2015 15:17

Labyrinth and the Neverending Story are compulsory viewing for children.

Was Shock when I found out my DP had never watched either of them!

prepperpig · 30/04/2015 15:18

I am ultra strict on age certificates on movies. BUT…..

I have let the DSs (10 and 8) watch the Goonies because apart from the swearing and the dead guy in the freezer it is fantastic and my concern is more about violence than swearing. Its actually a 12 in the UK according to the copy on my shelf and a PG in the US. There is also a cut UK version which is PG.

There are a couple of "Oh Shits" "Holy shit"s etc, they talk about taking a piss theres a scene with the housekeeper where mouth is translating the spanish and tells her about drugs and sex torture toys in the attic (or something like that) and the bit where Chunk knocks over the nude statue and they stick the penis back on upside down and say it looks normal to them. There's also a bit where Troy uses the car mirror to look up Andy's skirt.

Other than that its an amazing film. Just the right level of action and excitement. Mine adore it.

We haven't done Stand by Me, that is a 15 and not appropriate yet IMO. I've also been holding off on Ghostbusters just because its fairly sexual in places but we'll probably watch it soon. They love love love the Princess Bride and we read the book first which they were gripped by.

prepperpig · 30/04/2015 15:19

Oh please listen to the neverending story on audiobook/read it first. The book is so much better than the film.

AtomicDog · 30/04/2015 15:20

I have the VHS video of stand by me ans it was a 15!
Goonies, BTTF, even ET etc riddled with bad language. Was amazed, as it must have gone completely over my head aa a child.
don't even get me started on Grease, a PG, and its themes...

EmeraldThief · 30/04/2015 15:21

Aftee you've done Ghostbusters then you have to do Ghostbusters 2. It's better IMO.

The Return to Oz is good as well, I don't know how scary the wheelers would seem now though.

Provencalroseparadox · 30/04/2015 15:31

My DCs love Ghostbusters and will not watch Gremlins. I've tried a couple of times but no way.

They absolutely loved the original Karate Kid and they like Back to the Future.

namechangingtotest · 30/04/2015 16:24

Legend.
Time Bandits.
Agree with Willow, Never Ending Story and Labyrinth.

FruitOwl · 30/04/2015 16:28

Home Alone, Honey I Shrunk the Kids

spiderlight · 30/04/2015 16:34

Mine (8) has just watched and loved Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure. He also adores The Iron Giant, which is the most fabulous film that nobody has ever heard of. He's made several of his friends watch it and they all love it too.

Howlongtillbedtime · 30/04/2015 16:54

Thank you everyone

So far I have decided on
Ghostbusters 1 and 2 , thanks emerald thief , I had forgotten about the 2nd one
The Goonies , I think they can cope with a couple of Oh shits
The Princess Bride
Dark Crystal
Indiana Jones

I am going to leave Stand by me and a couple of the others till they are older , thanks for the advice on them .

Never ending story and a couple of others they have already seen .

Is it bad I am hoping for rubbish weather so we can watch them all ?

namechangingtotest · 30/04/2015 16:54

spiderlight, I really enjoyed the Iron Giant. More old fashioned graphics but a really great plot.

idonthaveausername · 30/04/2015 16:57

Both my DS around similar age as yours absolutely loved

Mighty Ducks
Labyrinth
Bugsy Malone
Who Framed Roger Rabit
Never Ending Story
Big
Police Academy
The Goonies
Heavyweights
Space Jam

I'm sure there are a few more. Can't think of them off the top of my head.

We watched Heavyweights as our Friday night movie night last week. Can't believe they ever got away with making a movie about Fat Camp. Just goes to show how quickly things have changed.

namechangingtotest · 30/04/2015 16:58

Howlongtillbedtime, they haven't seen the Princess Bride yet? Inconceivable. Grin

Howlongtillbedtime · 30/04/2015 17:01

I know namechangeingtotest I am indeed a bad mum !

But how good is it to know they will be watching it soon for the very first time ?

OP posts:
namechangingtotest · 30/04/2015 17:02

idonthaveausername, yes to Bugsy Malone. I'd forgot about that film.

namechangingtotest · 30/04/2015 17:04

Howlongtillbedtime, I'm so tempted to come round and hover outside your window to watch these films.Blush

Howlongtillbedtime · 30/04/2015 17:05

Oh bugger

So now we have Bugsy Malone and Might Ducks to add to the list .

This could get expensive Grin
