Into the woods

Well, after much hype I went to see this tonight, and feel a bit, meh.

It's enjoyable enough, a few laugh out loud moments and all round good performances, but seriously, it's a pointless little film that doesn't take the story or and ends with a whimper.

I would love to hear if anyone else loved it, and if so please tell me what I missed. I didn't hate it, but equally found it mainly forgettable, though it should have been good. It really just didn't add up to what it should, I feel.

It looked from the trailers as though it was a movie that was trying to be rather clever tying different stories together. Was it not?

I enjoyed it for its originality and I thought Emily Blunt was stunning.

I wouldn't watch it again though...

Well, the stories do blend together quite neatly, but it was left wondering quite what they were trying to do with the film.

Loved the performances and it's a cleverly told story. DD and I love a good musical.
DD absolutely adored it and has been playing the music since she got home. Initially i thought there wasnt any good stand out songs except Agony (which was fun) but since hearing "No ones going to Guide You" a few it has really grown on me, but then one of my favorite songs is "Not while I'm around" from Sweeney Todd which is similar.
It did hit a bit of a hiatus after the wedding and dh especially felt that it went on a bit too long after that.
I would see it again as I think it's a film that will grow on me.

Forgot to say DD is a typical teenage obsessive and has been looking forward to the film for ages and educated herself on the original musical. She says its much darker and as this is a Disney film they may have tried to make it a bit more family friendly. Going on the children behind me who talked all the way through it, i am not sure it worked. It is not a small children film at all, but then the mum had was reading her phone for ages and didn't tell them off for talking at all, so they may have enjoyed it and just didnt know how to behave in the cinema.

This piece, plus 'Sunday in the Park with George', are two of my favourite Sondheim works. I loved the originals of both, so I am worried it will not stand up in comparison.

and the princes were nice eye candy , I do like Chris Pine even though i'm just old enough to be his mother.

I loved it. I thought it was very cleverly done & the music was great. James Corden isn't a natural singer though is he?

I would have been perfectly happy had the wedding been the end of the story although I did quite like Cinderella's realisation that Prince Charming really wasn't all that charming - just more so than her wicked stepmother & ugly sisters .

I could watch it again & again. Excellent cast too.

Sweeney Todd is one of my favourite films too, so maybe I just like this style.

Is it suitable for a 7 and 9 year old? I love the look of the trailers but they won't like anything too black...

I don't think it's really a childrens' film and it is dark, more the original grimm's fairy tales than disney.

Ah OK thanks - they are both scaredy cats so not for them. I remain keen to see it though!

I know what you mean, but Chris Pine did it for me! The singing was impressive and I could watch Meryl Streep all day. I thought it was great.

ohmymimi I adore Sunday In The Park With George!

I thought ITW was great. It's an advantage to know or have an inkling of the production I think. Agree that Emily Blunt was stonkingly good, as was Meryl. Agony was indeed great and they were the epitome of Prince Charmings. Said this on another thread that whilst Jack was good, I think he should have been slightly older and less Gavroch-esque.

But it's an incredibly difficult stage production so they did a great job of adapting it.
