Has anybody seen this yet? It's a really chilling character study of a sociopath, played brilliantly by Jake Gyllenhall. He gets himself a police scanner and chases accidents and fresh crime scenes to get video footage to hawk to the news stations. The ethics of his actions, the television station's, and implicitly ours as viewers, are all called into question.

It also features the rather beautiful British actor Riz Ahmed, who was in Shifty and Four Lions, who gives an outstanding performance.

If you like a gritty drama/thriller, I really recommend it.

Sounds like my kind of film! Is it in the cinema? Or dvd?

BatonRouge · 10/01/2015 20:56

This film is awesome! Great cinematography of LA too.

BOFster · 10/01/2015 20:57

Weelass83, I think it's on the pictures but I bought a dodgy DVD in the pub after MIL's funeral. Brilliant film.

It was really moody, Baton, wasn't it? It had a Taxi Driver feel to it, but LA.

Agreed - particularly the scenes at night. Its like a photo essay of the dark corners of LA however the functional areas such as the suburban sprawl rather than its famous landmarks.

This is on Virgin movies on demand now- if you like your Noir darker than night, you must see it!

Amazing film. I watched it on a plane journey having just seen End of Watch (another LA film starring Jake Gyllenhaal). He was unrecognisable! Not just the weight loss but the whole reptilian persona; I had no idea that he was such an extraordinary actor.

Why on earth this didn't pick up Academy awards baffles me. Maybe it's just too dark, and the bad guy doesn't get his come-uppance. I like Benedict Cumberbatch ( although his repertoire is limited to baffled posh blokes) but Gyllenhaal's performance is light years ahead of The Imitation Game. And that bloody Redmayne tit.

Do watch Nightcrawler, proper grown-up cinema.

It was fantastic wasn't it? And yes, very reminiscent of Taxi Driver.
End of Watch was very good too, I really rate Jake Gyllenhaal.

EachandEveryone · 14/04/2015 09:10

It's very Taxi Driver. That's not a bad thing. Thought Rene Russo was brilliant as well.

Just watched it - fab.

I watched this last week. Also think Jake Gyllenhaal is fantastic actor. Alongside Bradley Cooper, I think they're both very versatile and seem to give everything to their performances.

Agreed BatonRouge - amazing cinematography. And Gyllenhaal's character - I was so glad he didn't get his comeuppance. A 'happy' ending just wouldn't have suited such an unsettling film.
