am going to see it this week. for those who call themselves religeous or those who have a faith in jesus, i think it might be a bit of a wake up call.

personally, i was taught about the crucifixion and jesus all my life and although you think to yourself "oooh i bet having nails stuck in you is a bit painful" i think we probably forget the horror of the whole journey of jesus death. i imagine its one of those films which makes me think " you lazy lazy lazy good for nothing ungreatful person..you cant even get up for church on a sunday morning"

at the moment i think that anyway but it doesnt make me move my arse. i think this film will bring it home.

as for the historical argument. my husband did a module in his politics and histoy degree entitled " what is history" exploring who wrote history and i thought it very thought provoking when he told me about it at the time. the bible is not a historical document as far as i understand it although on the telly (!!) it did say 70% of americans thought it was, which is quite frightening.

is it not a book of principles to live a good life by? if you take every letter to be your life i think its rather sad - stuff wars are made over
"the bible said "the" on page 789
" no it didnt it said "it"
" right lets go to war and i will kill you for it"

its a book of principles not historical fact. if your not religeous the principles still apply only you dont have to get on your knees every night to thank anyone for it - plus its a good story.

there is a programme tracing historical elements in the bible ( old testament and new) it traced Joseph and the technicolour dreamcoat and also King Herod - and that programme said the slaughter of the innocents was probably not as the bible tells it - but more likely it has been twisted over the years cos Herod Killed two of his youngh sons.

its not plausable in reality to have all these stories in the bible unchanged since the very beginning. however they hold a truth ful historical element although its not a historical document and its a good book of principles to live your life by imo

so sayeth custardo
amen

I have to say I always refer to it (the Bible) as the greatest selling fiction novel of our time.

(although I preferred War and Peace)
Also find contention with th phrase that I recall, that says to strike down any who trys to get yout o worship a new god.
Thats wrong I know I am a religious philistine - thats what being brought up Catholic did for me!

I can't bear the thought of going to the see The Passion, I don't like the idea of bludgeoning people into conversion, or making them feel incredibly guilty that their faith has lapsed. I'm also furious that Gibson only concentrates on a tiny bit of Jesus' life and doesn't give any background at all. I think it reduces Christianity, makes it more simplistic, less challenging.
I haven't seen it though so I could be talking bollocks.
Loved Life of Brian though....

I went it to see it last week and found it profoundly moving. Even forgot the Mel Gibson connection while watching it.

Went to see this at the weekend. Personally thought it would have been better without the subtitles- they were a bit distracting & you could follow the film adequately without. I thought it made some parts of the procedings clearer- I'd always thought Pilate was evil but you could see the bind he was in. Very thought provoking (but could see Monty Python in a number of scenes, which was very offputting!)

saw this film last night by way of a friend with pirate dvds(very good copy).although christened etc i do not come from a religious background and in recent years have been dabbling in paganism.my dp is a complete athiest(sp?)but wanted to see it just to say we had.my view now has completely changed.
this was the most disturbing film i have ever seen, also the most thought provoking.the violence in the film i think at times was abit over the top but apparently they toned it down for the audience.i was in tears at least 4 times during the film,i dont know if this is down to the fact it was written in a way that marys feelings came across strongly and as a mother to a young family this tugged on my heart strings.
after the film i could not stop thinking about it and even this morning its still bothering me.i dont know if its because i was bought up believing that this really happened etc or what my dps view it was a good film with a good story.my dps friends wife has read her bible every day at least once since watching this film where before seing it didnt bother.
i think for all who watch it it will be a profound experience.
not something you could watch over and over though...definatley a once only film.
