Who's going to see it?
Anyone not going to (excluding those who cant due to no babysitters)?

I think not - I am so not able to take violence these days however necessary! I think it would be worth a pop though for those that can!

Tinker · 26/03/2004 19:18

Want to out of curiosity.

Im going to see it today - Im quite looking forward to it although I just cant imagine it being any different from all the old easter jesus stories but just updated with technology and testing my reading abilities

donnie · 27/03/2004 14:18

I don't think I can face going as it is supposed to be ultra-violent. It was ripped apart in the Guardian yesterday! I just know I'd spend half the time cowering beneath my seat and the other half crying - not exactly a fun night out! still curious though.

champs · 29/03/2004 00:24

sorry... wat was life of brian about??

i want to see passion but still b/f

Lil · 29/03/2004 13:22

Grr..this film makes me mad. The religious lobbies are the first to complain about violence in the media/film world but then they think its fine to shock people into 'believing' by using extreme violence. What sort of a message does this give? Forget about living life in a worthy manner, just watch this gore fest!!!!Its just gruesome and plain nasty.

bobsmum · 29/03/2004 13:39

I'd like to see it, but I'm a real wimp when it comes to violence and gore and don't normally watch anything beyond a 12 rating. What rating is it anyway?

wog · 29/03/2004 13:41

Just wanted to say I realy enjoyed the film - I got so into it I even forgot that it was in subtitles - agree that it was gory but I think this made me appreciate what Jesus went through for us even more - not interested in the religiouse argument about the Romans and the Jews - I dont think that was the important part I think that it was that Jesus died for us (and someone is always going to be blamed)I just thought that the portrayal of the devil, Jesus and our lady was wonderfuly created.

wog · 29/03/2004 13:42

sorry bobsmum it is an 18

Tetley · 29/03/2004 13:43

Champs - Life of Brian is the Monty Python take on the story, witrh Brian being the central character. It's very very funny and has to be watched at least once in anyone's life!

Marina · 29/03/2004 13:51

I would much rather watch the Miracle Maker, or the Pasolini Gospel According to St Matthew, to be honest. Or The Life of Brian!
The excessive violence depicted, even if it is all implied on the pages of the Bible, worries me. I am also concerned about the agenda of Mel Gibson and his family - isn't his elderly dad a Holocaust denier? Not that he is responsible for his father's views, but I'm not comfortable with that background.

bobsmum · 29/03/2004 13:56

Also not convinced by Mel Gibson's motives.

"Miracle Maker" is great - makes dh cry every time - big softie. "Jesus of Nazareth" is also good cos Jesus isn't blonde or from Texas as he seems to be in most other cinematic efforts.

I might risk Passion once it's on video and I can fast forward the nasty bits - I know how it ends anyway

MrsDoolittle · 29/03/2004 14:03

Tetley, I have watched it about five times and I could do the same again - it's hilarious. Suits my daft sense of humour down to the ground ! (Life of Brian that is. I am not fora moment suggesting The Passion would be funny!!)

No it ought to be higher, ks? I rememeber the chap with jasmin tree, was it jasmin? Who hadn't spoken for so many years. I love that bit! Sorry to be trivial

champs · 29/03/2004 18:03

thanks tetley..... Marina-- i didn't know it had subtitles.

I still want to see it...will have to wait till it comes out on dvd/video

Chinchilla · 29/03/2004 22:23

I love The Life if Brian. I know I'm misquoting, but 'I'll have a large flat one and a packet of gravel' in the stoning scene makes me laugh every time!

MrsDoolittle · 29/03/2004 22:43

Naaa now I remember! it was a juniper bush!!
That's one of those scenes too Chinchilla!

Chinchilla · 29/03/2004 22:49

What about the scene where the Roman guard asks the man if he is there to be crucified, and he says no. The guard says, 'OK, off you go then', to which the man replies 'Not really, I was only joking, I AM here for crucifixion.' (Paraphrasing again!)

The life of Brian was more controversial and came out as an R18 in NZ it was banned for a long while
How times change
My son first saw it aged 8 and pissed himself he is avid Monty Python fan, like the rest of his maad bad and dangerous to know family...
I accept that the violence is part of the story but I cannot watch violence at that level no matter what the story!
Agree that to tell it with frills and soap would detract from its power and grip.

MrsDoolittle · 30/03/2004 08:58

I have to say that I agree with you on that one Bloss. Besides, we all know it's violent - who said we HAVE to watch it! The truth isn't pleasant and as someone put earlier there's stuff going on in our world now that is pretty horrific. We can't choose whether to acknowledge that can we?
I don't understand the controversy over The Life of Brian either, it's seriously funny but who is going to take it seriously????

Janh · 30/03/2004 09:41

Boris Johnson on The Passion v Life of Brian - well, not v, just the effect the Passion had on him - it had me crying with laughter. (And - specially for bossykate on the value of a public school education - "You can quibble with some of it: surely the vocative of Judaeus is Judaee?" )

I love Boris - pity he's taken.

ks, there is a slightly rude bit in LoB, where Brian has a wild night with young lady, ecstatically flings open the shutters starkers in the morning, and beholds a crowd of Brian worshippers. You could put your hands over ds's eyes at that point?
