"So why this terrible Voltairean cachinnation when I think of the Passion together with the Life of Brian" - could somebody (public school?) translate this for me, please?

Lil · 30/03/2004 10:04

Mrs Doolittle, you're right I don't HAVE to watch it. In fact by the sound of it, those of us who can't stomach violence won't go to see the film. So the christian message isn't going to make it to us is it??? So therefore the christia message will only reach those who have got a stomach for violence....Hmm!

kiwisbird · 30/03/2004 10:09

cachinnation is mad laughter
I know that much

MrsDoolittle · 30/03/2004 10:13

Rubbish - the truth ain't always nice, is it?

MrsDoolittle · 30/03/2004 10:24

Janh, have you met Boris? I have and I was almost surprised to admit that I found him to be a very nice, highly intellectual man. This article has, infact, served to deepen my respect for him. For anyone that has understood my previous inarticulate comments, Boris has done this with eloquence!

MrsDoolittle · 30/03/2004 10:26

I'm sorry I meant to write "misunderstood my previous comments" Brain is like porridge today!

Tinker · 30/03/2004 10:33

Hutton (Hutton?!) Gibson - mad I tell yer

MrsDoolittle · 30/03/2004 10:45

You know what they say.. You can choose your friends but you can't choose.....!!!

Janh · 30/03/2004 10:56

Oh, MrsD, no I haven't, you lucky thing!

He has always seemd to me to be exactly as you describe him - when he chaired HIGNFY I spent the entire programme with a fond indulgent smile on my face (when I wasn't cackling) and noticed that all 4 panellists were the same.

Were his kids there when you met him? I'd love to see his fatherly role!

MrsDoolittle · 30/03/2004 11:08

No his kids weren't with him. Dh thinks he's a nice man too - (which is surprising, he's a lefty!!) but he's doesn't understand his appeal to women! I can't explain it to him either, he just is....

Janh · 30/03/2004 11:28

kb, thanks for that, it helps a lot!

bk, another bit for you "I suppose I could quote the great materialist and Epicurean Lucretius to the effect that tantum religio potuit suadere malorum".....???

Janh · 30/03/2004 11:36

MrsD, he has a fan club! This is the HIGNFY page from it. The fan club is a bit blue but if you ignore that it's very good value!

bundle · 30/03/2004 11:38

haven't seen boris in waitrose for a while..too much of a media tart now maybe?

MrsDoolittle · 30/03/2004 12:20

Cheers Janh!!!

jodiemay · 04/04/2004 12:33

My husband and I went to see Passion a week ago, and I have to say I thought it was very good, it even encouraged me to read my son's bible with him! I am not a religious person, but this was a real thought evoking film and I cried several times. Worth seeing although I don't think I'd ever want to watch it again!

twiglett · 04/04/2004 13:39

donnie · 04/04/2004 15:09

hey Lil, if you want to 'get the Christian message' you could always try going to church you know! there's one in every neighbourhood !

Sorry Bloss, I have to agree with Twiglet here. Mark is generally the only gospel considered by scolars as an eye witness account. Luke was almost certainly written at least 150 years after the events. Of course feel free to disagree with me, this information was considered accurate in academic circles 20 years ago when I did my religious studies degree. There may have been startling new discoveries since then.

Of course, if you believe in the absolute truth of the Bible, then you have a vested interest in believing that all the gospels are eyewitness accounts. Consequently many of the churches (though interestingly, not the Catholic) stick by the line that they were written AD 60-90.

As to the Passion? I'm not going to see it, I wouldn't want to give Mel and his dad my money. Though DH insists he's going to get together a bunch of friends, sit in the back row and sing 'always look on the bright side of life' during the crucifixion scenes.

hercules · 05/04/2004 12:19

Where did you do your RS degree Slug? I did mine at Kings College.

Got into Christianity only as part of my (unfinished) MA
