I know this film has a 12A rating - if you have seen it, what age do you think it is suitable for?

DS is 9 - but gets scared fairly easily. DH wants to see it a lot - do I send him by himself? (DH is a bit down right now, and I would love to take him to the IMAX version, but that would need us all to go, as the cinema is too far for public transport, and DH won't drive there by himself)

I'm off to see it with dh this afternoon so will let you know!

GotMyGoat · 28/04/2012 07:53

P.s i'm a scardey cat who can't watch scary films... So should be a good judge.

Donki · 28/04/2012 09:25

Have a good time :) I look forwards to your report!

I'm so looking forward to it but it's on at the further away one and dd1 wants to see Hunger games at our local one.

akaemmafrost · 28/04/2012 12:27

I took my 9 year old. He loved it was totally gripped by it BUT he did say afterwards it was a bit scary. Not sure really, there were a few bits where I did question if I had been right to bring him. On balance I will probably wait a year or two before taking him to another 12 rating.

GotMyGoat · 30/04/2012 19:16

Ooops - I forgot to check back in at the weekend, there were loads of children at the cinema, toddlers and older children alike - so am very please to say i thought it was suitable for a 9yo. 'aliens' get as scary as the one you would have seen from the trailers so that's not a worry - although there is a scary hooded alien chappy at one point that freaked me out, perhaps distract with popcorn when he arrives? also there were no embarrassing sexy scenes - which you normally get in this sort of film... I did feel a bit on edge, there's a lot of action and explosions etc, and not much down time (I like a bit of down time see?).

I'd say go for it :)

GotMyGoat · 30/04/2012 19:17

My DH is thrilled as he was given a free Captain America keyring with his popcorn combo - I'm more a Thor girl myself :)

Donki · 30/04/2012 19:21

Thanks Goat. I will discuss with DH! I think that he would prefer a Thor keyring myself. The Young Donk just likes key rings regardless...

I went to see it yesterday and have recomended it to the parents of an 8yo I know. Its got a big of the scare factor as there are some aliens invading but its towards the end and the humour detracts from that. As a previous poster said theres nothing sexual which is quite an acheivement given that scarlett baps out johanssen is in it.

As we were leaving we saw a little lad of around 6/7 dressed as the hulk leaving too and he was smiling id that helps.

MadameChinLegs · 30/04/2012 19:27

Bit not big

MadameChinLegs · 30/04/2012 19:28

Nooooo Iron Man is the bestest.

givemushypeasachance · 30/04/2012 19:54

I saw it yesterday and think it's absolutely bloody brilliant - I was a bit worried at first that they might have tried to cram too much and too many characters in, and that it would end up being a bit shallow and feeling rushed, but they balanced everyone out really well. With Joss Whedon directing and co-writing I should maybe have had higher expectations, but I was surprised and pleased with how funny it was too - if you've seen it, then the scene with Hulk and Loki towards the end - you know the one? I actually nearly let a bit of wee out at how hilarious that was. Grin

I still think the whole concept of the Avengers is a little weak in that you've got a demi-God, a nigh-on indestructable rage monster and a genius with a superpowered weaponised flying robot suit, and then you've got a very strong but ultimately just human guy with a nifty shield, a highly trained secret agent/archer and a highly trained spy/secret agent (or whatever Black Widow is supposed to be). The last three are fine but they're just not on the same level as actual superpowered folk, particularly when it comes to battling hoardes of advanced alien types... Still, the film made an excellent job of finding them all things to do!

Just beware, if you know what Joss Whedon is famous for doing to much-loved characters... maybe take a tissue or two, just in case.

Fabulous film. A little bit of death and a few of the violent acts are not totally cartoon that some sensitive children may get upset about.

Only thing was I think not 100% sure that one of the characters used the word flange or something along those lines which made me go Shock.

DS(11) would never have heard this word though.

givemushypeasachance · 03/05/2012 23:10

Xales - do you mean the mewling quim line? Grin

Xales · 05/05/2012 10:23

We are going Monday. Dh saw it tonight (twice) at work and I've had lots of 'you'll love it' texts.
Crystal- have you seen Cabin in the woods? Dh said that was very Joss Whedon too.

Have decided not to take the Young Donk (he does get scared easily).
We will do something else whilst DH is watching it.
Thanhyou all:)

CrystalsAreCool - I wasn't trying to be spoilery, just tissues can be helpful when watching Wheddon-helmed productions... /shifty eyed look/

MrsDmitriTippensKrushnic · 05/05/2012 21:42

I knew the mewling quim line was in it and it still made me laugh in a shocked sort of way. TBH I think the line would go over a lot of adults heads and wouldn't even register with kids. Joss loves to throw in very English swear words that don't register with the US censors (although surprised at the BBFC!)

I saw it at 10am in an almost empty cinema when the DC were at school - absolute bliss. It is a truly fantastic film and I love Loki in a very bad way. DD is 8 and I'd have no issues with her watching it. DS1 and DS2 still haven't forgiven me for going without them Grin

Loved it, and not too awful for 9 year olds I'd think.

Yes I was bit Shock at the "quim" as well but I think I was the only one in the theater who realized what it meant, as I'm the only Mumsnetter apparently. :o Americans don't say that.

I really enjoyed it; I love Iron Man the best I think though that Thor...phhoooaarrrghhhh.
