I went last night and it made me cry.. beautiful boys and beautiful scenery. I want (to be) a cowboy. Anyone else seen it yet? what did you think?

I read the book which was amazingly tender and touching. Can't wait to see the film, planning to go next week.

milkbar · 08/01/2006 12:39

Yes I think Annie Proulx is a wonderful writer. It can be very disapointing when an adaptation doesn't live up to the original book. But I think this does - hope you enjoy it.

i have read the book

looking forward to seeing film

HeyBaby · 12/01/2006 19:19

Just saw the movie. Found it a bit slow but felt that it was really well done and acting very believable. Made me feel really sad for the two guys! Story of "forbidden love" with a twist .... Just saw that it won Best Picture in the 2005 Critics Choice award. Shame that Heath Ledger missed out on Best Actor (went to Phillip Seymour Hoffman for Capote). I'm interested to read the book but I read "The Shipping News" by same author and didn't really like it ...

WestCountryLass · 15/01/2006 22:13

I think itg was the saddest film i've ever seen sob

spacedonkey · 16/01/2006 19:00

I went to see it today and had tears streaming down my face at the end ...

An Oscar for Heath Ledger, surely?

MarsOnLife · 16/01/2006 19:13

oh I'm so glad to hear these reviews. My BF went to see it with her SIL and they hated it.

HeyBaby · 16/01/2006 20:51

Funny - I know some girls who found it slow but still liked it. It's mainly been the male friends of mine who haven't liked it - not comfortable with the whole subject although they proclaim that they are not homophobes!

spacedonkey · 16/01/2006 21:18

dp said he didn't want to go and see it (which earned him a you're-a-homophobe rant) - I went with my mum and dd and we all loved it. I didn't think it was slow at all. I didn't want it to end.

Turquoise · 17/01/2006 09:24

Just heard that this has won masses of Golden Globes. I saw it on saturday and loved it. Beautiful, so sad, such subtle and restrained direction, and some hilarious oneliners. Just about perfect, one of the best films I've ever seen.

beatie · 17/01/2006 09:53

It left me and DH feeling quite sad afterwards. We both loved it.

katierocket · 18/01/2006 09:59

Loved it. Thought the scene where they first met again after 4 years was so powerful. So sad too. Also, the setting was so evocative.

LipstickMum · 23/01/2006 12:46

I saw it last night and absolutely loved it. Like you Beatie, it left me feeling quite sad afterwards. The under-current of homophobia that ran through it sent a shiver down my spine and made me feel scared. I loved the scene where they met up after 4 years too, I was so happy that they were so happy to see each other after so long. I can't stop thinking about it today.

geekgrrl · 27/01/2006 11:57

watched this last night - what a beautiful film. So tender and sad, there was so much love between the two of them. One of the best films I've ever seen - Jake and Heath did such a great job of showing the chemistry between the two characters.

Rhubarb · 27/01/2006 12:04

Lou33 is going to see this with her new boyfriend!

lou33 · 27/01/2006 12:26

bah!

Misspiggy · 27/01/2006 13:00

at everyone who has seen this! DH doesn't want to see it...no "homophobic" reason, he just hates romances and would ruin it by making cynical comments throughout so I'm just going to have to wait until it comes out on DVD.

Marina · 27/01/2006 13:01

I think we should all club together to buy free tickets for redreadskinnypants. And then get her insightful views on how exactly homosexuality is damaging to society in the context of this film.

Lonelymum · 28/01/2006 19:06

I saw it today (on my own - just as well as it would not have been dh's type of film - funny though because I think he would be able to relate to their mumbled, monosyllabic conversations!) Nice film. Didn't cry until he went into the other guy's childhood bedroom and discovered what he did in the wardrobe (won't give anything away in case anyone wants to see it and hasn't yet). That was so touching.

donnie · 30/01/2006 19:50

saw this at the weekend and I just cannot stop thinking about it.....utterly brilliant - Heath Ledger is superb. Had read the short story previously but this was better. I just want to see it again!

suzywong · 01/02/2006 14:43

Absolutley marvellous

I want to see it again too

I blubbed

I am so glad it wasn't given to a mianstream Hollywood director. I thought the Asian way of leaving things unsaid was extremely powerful and comprehensible.

And my word aren't those men handsome.

suzywong · 01/02/2006 23:53

Mmmmmm...Jake and Heath and their baleful looks

Gingerbear · 02/02/2006 01:03

Oh I really want to see this film.
I will be alone though.
DH said 'You want me to come with you to see a gay cowboy film?? I don't think so'
OK John Wayne, so go milk your horse....or whatever those immortal words were.

suzywong · 02/02/2006 01:59

you will be alone but it's better that way
DH said he didn't want to see any backward saddle riding and bumless chaps.
The fool

NotQuiteCockney · 02/02/2006 07:21

I went to see this last night with some friends, really enjoyed it. Beautiful cinematography.

I did think Heath lapsed into his normal accent during the wedding vows, a bit, though ... anyone else notice that?
