Please recommend a good-quality but easy-to-watch film for DH and me for tonight. A romantic comedy maybe?

Something with decent acting but nothing taxing (we usually stick to arthousy stuff but are too knackered for anything too clever tonight )

We watched phonebooth and it was surprisingly good and edge of your seat kind of stuff! Me and DH like watching chickflicks (he will deny this though) we recently watched 50 first dates which was quite easy watching.

My bil's girlfriend blubbed at king kong too because she didn't know what was going to happen - she thought they would all live happily ever after

If you haven't seen Amelie yet - its fab, quirky, funny and pretty easy to watch . Except the subtitles of course .

We watched The Life Aquatic the other day, it's truly bizarre and very funny in places. Not a rom com though.

Agree with Twiglett - the Station Agent is fantastic

Roobie · 31/12/2005 18:02

Out of the ones already listed I would go for "About a Boy" - funny, romantic but not too cloying with a great soundtrack. Hugh Grant is ace in it - and I hate Hugh Grant.

cupcakesbakingonanopenfire · 31/12/2005 18:14

I really liked Hitch.
Closer is fairly good (but not a teary one - and I cry at everything too, including the music to Spiderman which was on the radio earlier - wtf?).

snafu · 31/12/2005 19:55

Am probably miles too late anmd you've gone and got it already but - Grosse Pointe Blank, anyone? Very funny, romantic but sharp, great soundtrack, need I say more...?

collision · 01/01/2006 01:31

what did you watch in the end?

I didnt get to see my film in the end as I had to work in the bar and speak to annoying little people I didnt want to speak to!!!!!!!!!

Twiglett · 01/01/2006 08:49

really enjoyed Mr and Mrs Smith last night

so add that to the pile of mindless not clever but enjoyable drivel that can be watched this year

Twiglett · 01/01/2006 08:51

btw I hated about a boy .. thought it was mindless drivel with no redeeming features at all ..and I like my mindless drivel to have at least one redeemable feature (like a fanciable leading man or quirky supporting character)

We ended up watching Sharpe's Eagle last night. not exactly a romantic comedy but some nice eye candy in the form of the Hunky Sean! Sigh!

Janh · 01/01/2006 10:50

I felt like that about Shirley Valentine, twig - really upset someone once by blurting it out when she had been raving about it

marthamoo · 01/01/2006 11:16

I couldn't watch Sin City - left dh to it at the point where the dog starts...no I won't..er...spoil it for anyone who hasn't seen it

Well, I got a film from Blockbuster called West of Heaven, North of Hell (or South of Heaven, West of Hell, or...oh whatever) On the box it said Billy Bob Thornton and Bridget Fonda. Only when we started watching it, BBT was in it for about 5 minutes in a completely extraneous role, and it turned out to actually be a vehicle for...oh you'll laugh...Dwight Yoakam. Yup, the ugly, balding C&W singer (apologies to any fans, no, actually, no apologies - you're deranged). He wrote it, wrote the screenplay, wrote the music (aaaargh), produced and directed it. In a supreme example of got too much money wish fulfilment he cast himself as an irresistable, hard man sheriff type who has sex with various women (only snogs Bridget though). It was like Rowan Atkinson doing Die Hard 4. It was dire - quite easily the worst film I've seen for ages. Lots of horrible gratuitous violence, deathly slow, acting of the plank of wood variety.

I've just been looking at Dwight Yoakam's fansite and contemplating joining in order to critique the film on the message boards - but I might get tracked down and killed by the legions of "We love ya Dwight!" posters on there.

It was bad.

franch · 01/01/2006 12:52

Vid shop had closed by the time DH got there so I sent him out to scour the local convenience stores and he managed to find a copy of Hitch. It was a lot of fun - just right for the state of mind we were in - so thanks for that. Anyone want to buy a copy?

OP posts:
mummytosteven · 01/01/2006 20:37

yes I've recently see I Love Huckabees. A bit crappy and weird but strangely compelling for all that (or maybe that's just the bits with Jude Law in )
