I've just been to the cinema to see this and to my surprise enjoyed it as I'm not a fan of the HP films preferring the books.

We watched it in 3D and at times it was amazing, I would go so far as to say it's the best film I've seen in the 3D format.

I took my 6 year old DS and we bumped into a classmate of the same age in the cinema and the boys did not find it scary or sad at all - in fact the part of the film that distressed them both the most was "the kiss" which they both gave a very French "beurk". So if anyone who has younger children was considering but was concerned I'd say go for it.

I can't comment on the language because we watched it in French but I was surprised by how many "merdes" were being flung about so maybe there is some bad language in the English version.

DS1 (10) and me are off to see this in an hour Grin - will report back my thoughts tomorrow....He's got all the rest on DVD and has read all the books twice (i have read them once - but quite a few years ago). I don't think he minds when the films go out of sync with the books.

agree DR is terribly wooden....

Is that the 'stay away from my daughter ' line?

I liked it in general but was sad not to see the centaurs, Buckbeak, the elves, the ghosts and Grawp turning up for the second half of the battle. And I thought they muffed Neville's big moment. I love the way he grabs the sword and strikes Nagini down in a single stroke in the book, it's really satisfying, whereas in the film he draws the sword and then runs around with it ineffectually for ten minutes while the snake chases R&H.

I also don't like what they did to Harry's final confrontation with V - I know that the wand plot is a mess, but by having Voldemort duel Harry all round Hogwarts with the Elder Wand they made a complete nonsense of it.

i completely agree they didn't do the emotion/character development justice in this movie, they cust a lot of the best bits some of which like the battle for eg probably would have translated really well onto screen. the whole plotline around harry and snape wasn't given nearly enough time IMO and should have been a lot more emotional than it was.
i think a lot of it was rushed and almost swept under the carpet.

i expected more of a build up to ron and hermione's kiss, i expected a much more dramatic battle both between hogwarts students and teachers etc and death eaters, and also expected much more drama from harry and voldemort.

DR has always been a bit wooden, but i've always accepted that as he suits the character so well.

i did think that ginny has grown into a really beautiful young woman though.

and yes more should have been made of the weasley twins death and molly/bella fight. that didn't really make sense and was also rushed!

still enjoyed it but not as much as the other films and certainly not a patch on the book.

foofus you aren't in Bristol by any chance? We saw it Friday night and had someone loudly crying and everyone laughing. Wonder if we were at the same showing?

Loved the film, unfortunately haven't read the books yet. I think will have to now, my friend has been telling me to for years saying they explain the story lines soo much better than the films.

Ooh shannaratiger, you can be a test subject. Did the stuff with the wands make any sense if you hadn't read the book?

Bless her heart, woman in Bristol sobbing loudly. I had a tear running down each cheek (think it was the pensieve scene that set them off) & was so embarrassed DH & DSs would notice! What I love about the films, & this one did not disappoint in this respect, is that it's one thing the whole family can do together & be sure of an afternoon's entertainment for all.

I actually quite liked Helen McCrory as Narcissa Malfoy. :)
Apparently JK Rowling had a hand in that film. She should have been bitch slapped for allowing the last half hour to be as stupid as it was.

If you hadn't read the books-I think you would be majorly confused about what happened.

If you haven't read the books-I recommend you do-they are TONS better. I have a feeling they are going to ruin Twilight-Breaking Dawn the same way.

I quite enjoyed it and thought they did the best they could with a book which imo was a bit of a letdown after the promise of the rest of the series. All that Deathly Hallows stuff was confusing and unnecessary as was the 'Dumbledore wasn't all he seemed' storyline. That said I don't think any of the films are a patch on the books although they are entertaining enough.

My best bits of DH2:

  • Maggie Smith and Alan Rickman - both fantastic
  • Helena BC being Hermione being Bellatrix - she really came across as Emma Watson in someone else's body
  • the Snape scenes and the bit when his parents etc come back - really moving, have never cried at HP before
  • the defence of the school by the staff, pupils etc made me feel all teary as well
  • Neville getting his moment even if it wasn't like it was in the book

My worst bits:
  • Voldemort's death was a real letdown. People cheered when Bellatrix was killed but he just faded away, what an anticlimax
  • The non-existent build up to R and H's kiss
  • the zero chemistry between Harry and Ginny - Ginny in the books is so cool and feisty, in the films she is as wet as an otter's pocket
  • the way too many important parts of the plot were glossed over, assuming that everyone has read the book is just lazy imo
  • the fact that it was the last one :(

Just seen a photograph in Marie Claire of the actress who plays Ginny; she looks absolutely beautiful.

Loved Neville and Maggie Smith - esp the spell she always wanted to do Grin

DS (who is 10) cried at the bit with his parents. And the first thing he mentioned at the end was how much eye liner Snape had on (was it more than in past films?) - he thought it looked cool....

It went on a bit for me - esp the 'heaven' bit and the long lingering glances between the three of them. Liked the bit on the bridge right at the end where they stood as if they were saying goodbye Sad

Ginny was a wet fish wasn't she?

It's so long since i read the book i couldn't remember the bit where Neville said he was going to tell Luna his true feelings - Confused

I just saw it this morning in 3d

Really enjoyed it - I've long given up comparing book to film, see them as two seperate things

Think Molly's line in the film was a bit lost as you'd be left thing 'why?' not knowing the history of her as well as in the book (ooh I AM comparing now!!) or what Bellatrix had just done you mightn't be sure of why she suddenly shouted 'not my daughter bitch'

I have to say I was impressed with HBC acting Hermione as Bellatrix, Snape's memory scence besides the cot got me too. It was great

Neville's 'mad for her' line irked me very slightly (bit 'hollywood' addition feeling to it)

Had to giggle at the way they were portrayed as their older selves though!!!!

We saw it on Fri night with ds (11) and i just found it gave me eye strain. it was so dark, i mean, literally, like i was trying to watch it through very dark sunglasses. i was exhausted by the end, and found it really hard to concentrate.

I don't think daniel's turned into a particularly good actor.

It was odd/entertaining seeing on Fri as the audience were very participative, which was funny. When HP and VM first fight, someone shouted 'VM, you goin' dooowwwwn' and the cinema erupted.

They do polyjuice scenes well - the scene with the multiple Harrys in the first DH was brilliant.

Can i ask two questions for the better initiated?

Why didn't Voldemort check Snape was dead before he left?

How did Neville end up with the Sword after it disappeared from the dead goblin's hand?

Report
PGTip · 19/07/2011 08:37

Why would he check? If he was dead all good, if not quite he'd suffer longer. He trusted Nagini to kill him.

The sword came to Neville because he deserved it basically. It appears to those in need or those who have earned it.

mummytime · 19/07/2011 09:02

Neville was also in Gryffindor, the sword came to those in Gryffindor in dire need who would use it unselfishly.

We loved HBC

I think Daniel is probably better playing someone other than HP, he looked quite interesting in the trailer I saw for "The Woman in Black", I hated the book but certainly never thought of Daniel as playing that role.

Loved the film until the last half hour. Agree it was rushed - was only just over 2hrs long so they could have done a lot more with Voldys last scenes. Maggie Smith and Alan Rickman beyond brilliant.

Quick question - what day and channel was 'the making of' on the other day - I missed it and want to see if it's on catch up Grin
