I've just been to the cinema to see this and to my surprise enjoyed it as I'm not a fan of the HP films preferring the books.

We watched it in 3D and at times it was amazing, I would go so far as to say it's the best film I've seen in the 3D format.

I took my 6 year old DS and we bumped into a classmate of the same age in the cinema and the boys did not find it scary or sad at all - in fact the part of the film that distressed them both the most was "the kiss" which they both gave a very French "beurk". So if anyone who has younger children was considering but was concerned I'd say go for it.

I can't comment on the language because we watched it in French but I was surprised by how many "merdes" were being flung about so maybe there is some bad language in the English version.

Oh no house elves? I loved that bit in the book!

Dh said he had loads dressed up last night & lots of cheering and clapping. He was on 2D & apparently 3D was more sedate Hmm

Ripeberry · 16/07/2011 20:36

Compared to the book (or my imagination), a lot of the gore was cut out of the film. Snape's killing was quite tame but the attack seen through the glass was very effective.
The only bit(s) that got me sobbing were the scene where younger Snape howls with sadness in front of Harry's cot and when Harry is seing his dead relatives and friends before confronting Voldemort.
Gonna watch it again but in 3D Smile

TandB · 17/07/2011 12:01

It was very good, but I was a bit irritated that they missed out all the reinforcements coming to the battle - Slughorn leaving and then coming back with all the school parents, and the house-elves and centaurs. I would have thought those bits would have lent themselves to cinema.

Longtime · 17/07/2011 12:17

kungfu, I thought they could have made more of the actual battle too. I understand that they had to concentrate on Harry's journey but the film was shorter than previous ones so they could have spent some time on it.

Colyngbourne · 17/07/2011 22:44

Possibly I'm the only one to totally loathe Molly Weasley's line to Bellatrix and that entire duel. Cheap and cliched.

Alan Rickman stole the show. The series belongs to him.

FoofusScrimgeour · 17/07/2011 22:51

In the book there was dialogue between Harry and Voldemort. Important dialogue that explained Harry's mother and the protection she gave him. Some of which puts Voldemort on the backfoot so to speak. I felt that was missing from the final battle.

plonker · 17/07/2011 23:12

I loved it! Best one yet IMHO

I'm another who made a conscious decision not to re-read the book or watch the previews. It drives me potty when they veer to far from the book, so I figured I'd enjoy the film more if the book was less fresh in my memory - it worked!!

I thought Alan Rickman was amazing as always, and the pensieve scene well and truly set me off
Maggie Smith is my idol and is everything that Prof McGonagall is. Brilliant casting.
Neville is a hero and his speech close to the end sent me over the edge!

My girls loved Mollie's line to Bellatrix and my 8 year old cheered Grin

Brilliant film!

I'm going to start reading the books again now

Tryharder · 18/07/2011 01:35

Going to see it tomorrow.

[can't wait]

beautifulswan · 18/07/2011 10:20

I agree that Molly's line was cheap and cliched. Otherwise enjoyed the film. I'm only on Order of the Phoenix so looking forward to reading the rest of the books, imagine the last book is much better, far more emotional.

LawrieMarlow · 18/07/2011 10:53

I think (although will have to check) that Molly does use that line in the book as well.

Longtime · 18/07/2011 11:14

She does use that line in the book. It seems to work better there. I thought it was a bit strange in the film that there she was, battling to protect Ginny, whilst Ginny herself plus Mr Weasley (plus one other Weasley, not sure which one) were standing watching her. It would have been so easy for another death eater to kill them while they were standing gawping!

plonker, I echo everything you said!

Nothing to do with hp but I just recently caught up with Downton Abbey (bought the DVDs as we don't get ITV here) and Maggie Smith is brilliant in that too.

megapixels · 18/07/2011 11:34

Yes that line sounded powerful in the book but plain stupid in the film. I didn't think this was the best film, but very moving and still enjoyable all the same.

I wouldn't take a six year old to watch it though! I don't know if it's just my children, but there is no way I'd want even my nine year old to watch that horrific Snape attack. I found it difficult to watch Blush.

Debs75 · 18/07/2011 11:40

loved Mollie killing Bellatrix
Mcgonaqgall great and Neville was such a star
read the book so long ago that i can't remember it much but loved the film

ManateeEquineOhara · 18/07/2011 12:11

Generally I loved it (esp the Snape in the Pensieve part). However I do struggle to like Daniel Radclifffe's acting, I do want to like him.

busyboysmum · 18/07/2011 12:55

Took my mum and 6 and 9 year old sons to see it at the weekend - we all loved it. Haven't read the book for a while so to me I didn't notice any missing bits - they are obviously going to have to make choices to fit it in a film length so didn't want that to ruin things for me.

We are going to go again in the hols maybe to watch it in 3D.

We also watched something last night on telly about how they made it which my boys were fascinated by - the youngest now wants to be an actor!

Colyngbourne · 18/07/2011 14:38

I never liked the line in the book either - JKR even returns to those ridiculous SHOUTING capitals from Book 4 or whenever it was that Harry had his "chest monster".

Mollythulu · 18/07/2011 15:35

Loved almost all of it, cried at the dragon, at Snape & the penseive, at the battle, ooh, through most of it. But I almost laughed at Molly's line - it just reminded me of Sigourney Weaver in Alien!! Seriously, they could have done a bit better than that. Still, I thought it was amazing in 3d, but my mum and dad won't go to the big cinema, so we have to go and watch with them at the independent one in 2D.

PersonalClown · 18/07/2011 15:44

Just got back from seeing it and I LOVED IT!!

I admit it cried when you saw the dead in the Great Hall. Sob!!

PGTip · 18/07/2011 15:50

They should have included Bellatrix killing the weasley twin, would have given more context to her confrontation with Mollie.

Overall an excellent but they did obviously miss out loads. Only 17 weeks to orally on DVD Grin

PGTip · 18/07/2011 16:07

17 weeks to go til out on DVD. Bloody phone!

SusanneLinder · 18/07/2011 16:24

At first I thought it was pretty good. Not quite sticking to the book in places, but when the teachers and OOTP and DA started preparing for the Batttle of Hogwarts, I was sooooo excited. The accompanying music score with it was fab and added to the atmosphere. The film went along beautifully until Harry's resurrection, and then became the most utter piece of garbage I have ever seen.Angry.

Neville's speech was cringeworthy, 10 minutes to kill the bloody snake, and the final Battle of Hogwarts, well, didn't happen. Now I know the film doesn't always stick to the book, but the whole crux was that Voldemort and Harry had their final showdown in the Great Hall, with everyone seeing it.Added to the whole excitement. Voldy disappearing in a crowd of confetti was pathetic, and a complete anticlimax for 10 years of Harry Potter. And the whole final cheesy bit in the courtyard, what on earth was that about?

I have now seen the film twice,2nd time to take my youngest and I hated it as much as the first. The film was ruined for me as the biggest anti-climax ever.More battles should have been in there. Even Molly Weasley's killing of Bellatrix was a damp squib.

On the plus side,Alan Rickman and Maggie Smith were superb, and they did get the Epilogue right.

But I was HUGELY disappointed. :(

PfftTheMagicDragonhideGloves · 18/07/2011 17:06

I was pretty disappointed. I thought that the DH1 was far better, and this one was poor.

As shroeder says, it was all Harry. And Radcliffe is just awful as Harry Potter, which made a lot of it hard to watch.

There is no chemistry between the young couple. Harry and Ginny could be an advert for abstinence. Hermione and Ron are not much better. Their entire plot was "we've kissed!!!"

Hmm

The only film chemistry is between Harry and Hermione, and there was nothing from Hermione in this film - she's supposed to be the brains of the operation, the film made it seem like Harry was the genius.

As for the epilogue. Urgh. Cheesiest piece of film I have ever seen. The pot belly. The facial hair. The dodgy 70's like clothes. Fucking terrible.

PfftTheMagicDragonhideGloves · 18/07/2011 17:08

And there was far too much cheesy "hooray for us!" type lines that didn't exist in the book. Plus, they obviously felt the need to add in some humour, which didnt work well.

PfftTheMagicDragonhideGloves · 18/07/2011 17:13

I think that the Molly Weasley line seems out of place in the film, simply because we know nothing of her in the films. She's hardly featured, so we have no character history, no knowledge of her character.

It seems odd, OOC, in the film.

PfftTheMagicDragonhideGloves · 18/07/2011 17:15

On the plus side, I think that the Malfoys were done very well by Jason Isaacs and Tom Felton. (I have never thought McRory was right for Narcissa). A wonderful mix of weary sadness and confusion. Not knowing what to do for the best, muddled in the proud self-preservation.

Now there's a spin off I would watch.
