movies for toddlers

Hi,
My toddler doesnt watch any TV but Im thinking of buying a movie that they could watch. Can anyone suggest any? Any old classics?

Fantasia went down well here. But tbh anything more than about half an hour can be a stretch- dd just 3 and managed beauty and the beast for first time at a sitting.

Sound of music (songs), aristocrats , finding nemo, jungle book also provoked some interest (but as I say her attention span is limited).

There's a Japanese cartoon (it's in English) called My Neighbour Totoro - my brother bought it for my girls and they still love it now. It's a real fantasy adventure and is really happy. if you're looking for something a bit less commercialised then it could be for you.

Curious George. Lovely, lovely film. Perfect for teenies and grown ups- it is funny but doesn't have that level of 'adult humour' hidden in it for adults like a lot of other kids films do. It also doesn't have that "everything must go horribly wrong for the protagonist and everyone must hate him before things turn out well" that a lot of American films seems to find necessary.

Probably not what you are after, as it is not a film but a dvd of song videos, but I really recommend They Might Be Giants' Here Come the 123s, which teaches toddlers about numbers. My 2.4 loves it, and the song are impossible to resist. You will find yourself humming 'zeros mean so much' before you know it. Quirky and fun.

Not sure if you have a boy or girl but my ds is obsessed with cars and toy story! Mind you you'll end up spending a fortune on merchandise if you introduce them to these! can't wait to take him for his 1st cinema trip to see cars 2!

Toy story 1,2,and 3 . But be warned, number 3 is really sad

I'm 41 and I cried at toystory 3 !!! I tried our 2.8yr old on it but she sort of lost the plot.. no films to recommend but a brilliant songs dvd is the Wheels on the Bus... as the reviews on amazon say, annoyingly brilliant!!

My DD1 (3.8) loves Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat. It was on over Christmas but you can get it on Amazon - Donny Osmond as Joseph. Bright colours, catchy songs. Not too long but long enough. We've had to buy a CD for the car! Loves Peter Pan also.

A surprise hit in our house has been Wallace and Gromit Curse of the Were Rabbit, and all the Wallace and Gromit short films (Wrong Trousers, etc.). They're so so very good that we can watch them over and over too: fabulous animation, and we see new things every time. It's quite embarassing though when DD1 says things like "Camelbert, Gromit??" at 100 decibels in Tesco.

The Princess And The Goblin, Disney classics, Finding Nemo, Toy Story trilogy etc.

Bertha - the best machine competition

First one I got for DS was Ivor the Engine.
First full movie he watched was Kung-fu Panda - he would have been about 18mo then and he was entranced. Then Finding Nemo and then steadily into the other Pixars and similar.

Shaun the sheep is a favourite still!

My DS loved animals when he was really little and loved The Adventures of Milo and Otis. Mary Poppins was also a big hit. :)

Olibeans, be warned, I gather that Cars 2 is a lot more violent than the first one - I have a lot of friends with kids in the 2.5 - 3yo age group, and all of them who've shown Cars 2 to their kids have regretted not watching it themselves first.

Olibeans - also, if it's his first triip to the cinema, don't waste your money going 3D - chances of him keeping the glasses on through it are not high. We didn't bother with our DS (3.7) - he loved it but yes, it is more violent thanks to the "James Bond" action stuff that goes on throughout.

I second My Neighbour Totoro - it's DS (2.1) absolute favourite. We don't have a tele but watch films and he asks to watch a bit of this every day. He also loves Ponyo (also Studio Ghibli) which again has a very gentle, nothing much happens storyline and seems to be utterly compelling toddlers. My friend's DS would even watch these in Japanese without complaining!! The parents and children also have a lovely family dynamic in these films and there's no shouting or fighting so they are perfect for before bed too.

My dd's first favourite film was 101 dalmations.

Any of the land before times (although first one is a bit sad)
Dumbo, Pinocchio & some of the other Disney Classics
Toy story 1, 2, 3 (although DD cried at the 3rd one the first time she saw it)
