I'd almost give up hope of seeing this film as the dates it was on clashed with everything else I was doing.
However I unexpectedly go to go last night.

It's very good. Javier Bardem is, as usual, excellent!.
The story is dark and tragic. THere are alot of themes to the story from illegal immigration, family love, spirituality, death and betrayal.

It's a long film, well over two hours and I can see it is not for everyone. However it was complex with enough of a plot to justify the length.

I saw it back in January and was so blown away by it I sent a review if it to an online reviews website who actually published it!

I've yet to see Javier Bardem give a bad performance in a film (although I didn't think much to Eat, Pray, Love.

As you say, lots of themes, lots to think about, beautifully shot and some excellent acting - many of the characters were unknowns.

I was really surprised it didn't win the Best Foreign Language film.

I gather it comes out on DVD quite soon.
