I have been looking forward to this film for yonks!!

went last night - enjoyed it, but didn't love it (obviously I will require a second viewing for the love to form)

Certainly didn't find it 'darker' than the last one (though it think Part 2 will be!)

Oh yes re: Lupin - and the steaming row that Harry has with him too.

Pfft - he's never ... checks IMDB

SHRIEK! Alan Rickman is slightly older than my parents!

I will be over there, whimpering in the corner.

PfftTheMagicDragon · 22/11/2010 21:30

I know! I just choose to langour in disbelief, pretending in my head that he is roughly 37, and always will be. Well, in my dreams he will be Wink

Marlinspike · 22/11/2010 22:26

I thought the 3 brothers animation sequence was absolutely fantastic! It had sort of japanese-y overtones, and was truly stunning!

It was the closest to the book out of all the films - like other posters, I couldn't work out why wormtail's silver hand didn't kill him, that made more sense than Harry and Ron just springing him. It must have been pretty hard to follow if you hadn't read the books - there was no helpful catch up, like, for example, Sirius's mirror - it was just Harry carrying around a dangerous shard of glass. Ministry of Magic nazi /stalinist purge set is amazing, and whoever played the ministry official striding after Harry et al whilst they were making their escape was fantastic, lots of menace, threat and power.

I didn't like how Dumbledore's grave was on a small island - reminded me of Diana! I am pretty sure he was buried in the hogwarts grounds at the end of HBP (not 100% on this)

Can't wait for part 2!

TinselinaBumSquash · 22/11/2010 22:32

I don't think it was the closest book to the film at all.. it missed out so, so much! All things that are imprtant to all the other stories going on in HP.

Thats the good thing about HP, its nut just Harry defeating Voldy, it Harrys struggle to to accept his life without his parents.

Ron and Hermoines Story
Harry and Ginny
Dumbledores history
Voldy history
Nevills story
Lunas story

The way JK Rowling entwined them all is for me what makes HP the best book ever.

DOn't get me wrong i liked the film but it is very far from the book.

I understand you can't put everything in but somethings through all of the films they changed for no apparent reason.

Like the wedding... why wasn't Harry in disguise? How hard would it have been to make him 'Barney Weasley?' it was changed for no reason.

Linnet · 22/11/2010 23:09

I went to see it last night with dh, he hasn't read the books but I have many times.

I did find myself thinking why did they miss out the Dudley conversation at the beginning, Why wasn't Harry in disguise at the wedding, Why was Tonks' pregnancy not mentioned and the argument with Remus. We also didn't get to hear the radio show which was a shame.
I also didn't like the way Bill Weasley was introduced like someone said earlier if they'd done it properly last time we'd already know who he was and it would make more sense. I really didn't like the bit with Harry and Hermione in the horcrux it was just wrong.

I wasn't sure about Rhys Ifans as Luna's dad and also would have loved to have seen the painting on Luna's ceiling.

How did Dobby know where to find them in the cellar when all Harry said was Help us he didn't mention where they were. And of course Wormtail didn't strangle himself with his silver hand, quite disappointing.

But I thought the Shadow puppet story of the deathly hallows was brilliant. Dh loved the bit in Bathilda Bagshott's house and actually jumped at that point. I thought the dancing scene in the tent was sweet but a bit weird. The ministry break in was good and so were the scenes in the Malfoy manor.

I really hope that there is more of Dumbldores story in the next one, I think there will have to be for it all to make sense and Snapes story has to be told it's one of my favourite bits of the book and explains a lot about him as well.

Roll on July

CheerfulYank · 23/11/2010 01:04

Ok, have we figured out who the gorgeous Capt. Jack-esque guy is? I thought it was Fenrir too, just by his comments to Hermione. Will imdb it and return!

Might go watch a bit of it in awhile...gotta love that part time job at the movie theater! :) (It makes up for being at least a decade older than all the other employees...)

Ooh, I liked the Three Brothers animation sequence a lot too, and thought Emma's acting was much improved.

PfftTheMagicDragon · 23/11/2010 07:11

I think that they skipped Harry being in disguise at the wedding (was he not also in disguise at Godrics Hollow in the book?) because there was otherwise quite a bit of being disguised in the film. The polyjuice at the start with all the Potters, the polyjuice in the ministry (excellent), when Hermione disguises him with the Snatchers. I would imagine that they felt it was too repetitive.

Dobby has a link to Malfoy Manor as he used to be an elf there, so I'll allow dramatic licence in that one. In the book though, they called for Dobby didn't they?

I think that they didn't mention the pregnancy (though Lupin did try to announce it but was interrupted by Mad Eye) because Tonks and Lupin are such minor characters in the films (and tbh I think it is justified - with such a lot to cram into a small time, their story is just not that interesting), it would have taken up time that we don't have. I assume that Teddy won't even be mentioned in the next film.

ShadeofViolet · 23/11/2010 09:43

Before the part with all the Harys it did look like Tonks wanted to mention something, and Lupin and her could be seen arguing in the background, I thought they would make something of it but they didnt, unless it got edited out?

They have to mention Teddy, the scene after the last battle will be less significant without him IMO. (Dont want to give too much away for those who havent read the books)

I thought the Three Brothers tale animation was lovely too.

One thing I did think was a bit rushed was the build up to the break-in at the Ministry. In the book it goes through the careful planning, the film makes it seem like they did it on a whim.

Sahdeofviolet - Lupin said that they had an announcement, but they were drowned out in the fuss.

potplant · 23/11/2010 14:10

When I read the book I always imagine Harry to to look like Bradley from Eastenders Grin at the wedding.

Daniel Radcliffe would have hardly been on screen if they had disguised him at the wedding and Godric's Hollow as well as the Ministry, so I can see why they decided not to do that.

I can see them missing out a lot of Dumbledore and Voldemort's stories.

TinselinaBumSquash · 23/11/2010 16:48

He was in his cloak at Godrics Hollow, they haven't mentioned the cloak which seems sill since it is quite important.

I loved the 3 brothers story.

PfftTheMagicDragon · 23/11/2010 17:12

yes they were! Thanks Tinsel, couldn't remember.

RustyBear · 23/11/2010 17:52

Teddy Lupin is in the cast list for Deathly Hallows2, along with "teenage Dumbledore"

PureBloodMuggle · 23/11/2010 18:02

I thought Rhys Ifans Irish accent was a bit pants - anyone else?

Oh imagine if they did include every details from the books - there'd be about 12 thousand films - all three hours long!!

I'd love to go again this week but have a wedding on the only day i'm free (do you think anyone would notice me sneaking of?) I suppose technically I'm not free on that day seeing I've a wedding to go to

BelligerentGhoul siad that hte yummy guy who isn't Fenrir was a snatcher played by Nick Moran, I just looked up on IMDB and the snatchers name is Scabior

BelligerentGhoul · 23/11/2010 18:17

Dobby came to rescue them because Dumbledore's brother sent him but not sure how he knew where to send them - if it's in the book, I've forgotten.

PureBloodMuggle · 23/11/2010 18:27

In the book didn't Harry say into the mirror 'we're in the Malfoy's dungeon' when he saw the eye appear?

MrsGuyOfGisbourne · 23/11/2010 19:26

Yes, Marlinspike - definitely agree about the Three Brothers' animation - was raving about it to DH when I got home.

BelligerentGhoul · 23/11/2010 20:09

That would make sense, Pure Blood!

Agree, the 3 brothers animation was really nicely done. Loved it.

CheerfulYank · 24/11/2010 02:15

Yes, pureblood, in the book HP said "we're at Malfoy Manor" and at this point doesn't even know it's Aberforth he's looking at...doesn't he think it's Dumbledore? Like, his memory of him or something?

Another part I thought should have been included was Ron saying "take me" when they tortured Hermione at the Manor. Anyone else?

PureBloodMuggle · 24/11/2010 16:42

That's right - Harry thought it was Dumbledore's eye in the mirror (well Dumbledore as in Albus!) but it's not mentioned int he film who he thinks it is at all is it?

I'm I'm remembering right then that Dobby just turned up in the film? Odd.

PureBloodMuggle · 24/11/2010 16:55

THe other thing that I've thought about after seeing the film was that it was a shame that they didn't include the fact that kreecher became quiet loyal to Harry because Harry started being nice to him

BelligerentGhoul · 24/11/2010 20:33

When Kreacher makes them wash their hands and then choose whether they want steak and kidney pie or whatever - LOVE that bit! I really hope they show the house elves charging around armed with knives and forks in the next one. :)
