Shrek 4: Too young for a 4 year old?

Got a rare day alone with ds1 and want to treat him so wondered about Shrek 4. He's 4.8 and managed to sit through Toy Story 3 but as he's never seen the other Shrek films I'm wondering if he'll be interested. Any views?

I took my dd who is 4 next month to see the new Shrek film and to be honest it was a complete waste of time. I felt the story was quite complicated and you needed to have seen the first films to have a hope of following the plot. My dd enjoyed it but I think that was more to do with the sweets and popcorn rather than the film. I wouldn't recommend it. I do know some people whose kids enjoyed it but it was a waste of money for my dd
